Delaware River Report / Conditions September 8, 2019

Well the release from Cannonsville has been increased again.  It is 831 cfs this morning.  The flow on the lower West Branch is still climbing as the higher release makes it down river but we should level out by the afternoon.  We’re starting off cool again this morning at 50 degrees but should reach 70 by the afternoon.  Clouds and wind 5 -10 mph from the North.  That’s much better than the wind we dealt with yesterday.  There were olives and a surprising number of yellow sallies out yesterday but the wind did not help at all.  Nymphing was a decent bet but a few people found success on top.

And we're up again!

And we’re up again!

The Stilesville gauge looks off so the release is steady at 450 cfs bringing the flow at Hale Eddy to 575 cfs.  Good for floating and wading.  We’re starting off at 48 degrees this morning but should hit 70 by late afternoon.  The wind will be up a bit at 10 -15 from the North so adjust your plan accordingly.  Nymphing has worked well during the day although some people are finding fish eating olives even in the sunshine.  Most of the olives have been coming off in the late afternoon mixed with a few isos and cahills.  There are tricos out again this morning but on these cold mornings they sometimes fall later than you expect so watch the tail outs once the sun hits the water.

Well it looks like NYC DEP has had enough of ramping the flows up and down.  The release hit close to 1,200 cfs yesterday afternoon and was immediately dropped back to 450 cfs. The recording says 450 cfs release but the gauge at Stilesville shows a 387 cfs flow this morning.  The flow  on the lower West and Upper Main will continue to drop but everything is in good shape for wading already.  Of course the quick bump in release pushed the weeds but they should have settled out for the most part.  Fish were rising in the high water in the evening so they should be easier to reach today.  We’re looking at 70 degrees today with a mix of clouds and sunshine.  Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  It looks like a great weather weekend.  Olives, isonychias, and cahills are still on the menu.  Definitely have your ants and yellow sallys ready just in case they hit the water.

The release from Cannonsville has been increase to 801 cfs.  Probably a temperature bump because the Mainstem at Lordville hit 69 degrees yesterday.  Today will be cooler with the air temp only hitting 73 degrees.  We’ll have sunshine with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  That’s actually better than yesterday when the wind mad fishing tough mid afternoon.  A few storms threatened us but the precipitation was non existent here – just the wind.  We’re still mostly fishing small olives, isonychias, and cahills.  Some caddis are around but we’ve also been finding a lot of yellow sally stoneflies.  Tricos have been spotty but they are still around.  If you don’t find fish on them by mid morning move around to different river sections.  They can also fall later than expected on cold mornings.

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 550 cfs.  The recording still says 450 but Stilesville is a steady 562 cfs this morning.  The flow at Hale Eddy will rise slightly during the morning.  Still a good level for both wading and floating. We have clouds this morning and may see a few storms push through around lunch time.  The projected rain amount is only .08″ but keep en eye on the radar in case we get a couple of severe storms are in the area.  Wind will be 10 – 15 from the South.  Olives, isonychias, and cahills.  We’re still only finding a few flying ants but caddis are around.

We had quite a bit of rain come down yesterday morning but most of it seemed to get soaked in to the ground. The rain stopped around lunch time and while the clouds came in and out during the afternoon the rest of the storms slid around us.  The rivers are up a little this morning but look fine and are fishable and and at a decent level for floating and wading.  The West Branch flow is dropping back slowly as the runoff subsides.  Today should be partly cloudy, 77 degrees wit wind 5 mph from the South.  Olives, isonychias, caddis, and maybe a few cahills should cover you today.  We have seen a few flying ants around but have not seen a large fall on the river yet.

The release from Cannonsville has been cut back to 450 cfs according to the recording.  The Stilesville gauge show 396 cfs..  It looks like they are counting on the rain to make up the flow difference.  We’ve had some light steady rain so far this morning but nothing significant.  The forecasted amount of rain today has been reduced to 1/2″ .  This could turn out to be a good day on the water rather than a washout.  High of 73 degrees with wind 5 -10 from the South.  Yesterday fished well after the evening rain with really good olives, some isonychias, and even a few cahills showing.  There were a lot of fish rising- a lot of small fish but if you were patient or lucky there were some good fish eating on top too.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 1, 2019

September 1st and it’s 49 degrees this morning.  Sections of the river fished well last night with olives and isonychias.  It took a while to get going but we did find some nicer fish rising plus all of the small ones we’ve been seeing.  Today looks good if Wunderground is correct.  We’ll see partly a partly cloudy sky give way to clouds in the afternoon.  The high will hit 73 degrees with wind 5 -1 0 from the south.  There is a 20% chance of rian but only .13″ if it even happens.  Blind casting isos would be a good move until the olives hatch. The weeds in the water from the release bump the other day made nymphing tough in spots but it filtered out enough to make it possible.  The release from Cannonsville has been cut back a bit to 500 cfs.

Yesterday afternoon the release from Cannonsville was bumped up to around 950 cfs.  It has been dropped back to around 679 cfs this morning so the West is back in good shape for both wading and floating.  The sudden increase did dislodge weeds and dirt making it tough/ almost impossible to fish the upper river yesterday evening.  That should flush out today with the lower release.  The river looks fine out front this morning.  We’re going to be cooler today with the high reaching 73 degrees.  Sunshine with a few clouds.  Wind will be 5 – 8 mph from the North.

The release from Cannonsville has been increased.  The flow at Stilesville seems to have leveled out around 960 cfs.  Of course that has pushed a lot of weeds and dirt into the river.  We’ll check it tomorrow morning to see if that has filtered out

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 30, 2019

It’s cool outside this morning the the air temp will rise to the high 70’s this afternoon.  Partly cloudy skies with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  Sounds pretty much like yesterday.  We may see some rain Sunday but it’s iffy at this point.  Small olives are still the mainstay but we are seeing some cahills and isonychias.  Caddis are out there and we should see more them as we move into Fall.  Nymphing is still your best bet during the day but there have been fish rising here and there so keep an eye out.  Sunny days have fished best for dries after the sun drops behind the hills.

Yesterday the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls peaked over 70 degrees and the East Branch at Fishs Eddy peaked at 69 degrees.  Give those areas a break and concentrate on the cold water.

We had good cloud cover for most of yesterday with some brief light rain around dinner time.  The rainfall total was pretty much nothing so the river levels are pretty much the same as yesterday morning.  Most of the storms slid to the north of us.  There were some olives during the day with fish sporadically on them.  Things picked up in the evening with a few caddis, more olives, and some isonychias depending on what river section you were on.  The sun is going to break through by mid morning but the air temp should stay in the low 70’s.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the North.
