Delaware River Report / Conditions September 28, 2018

We have some light rain this morning that should end in the next hour.  The flow at Hale Eddy is similar to yesterday morning at 3,530 cfs.  The clouds should stick around all day.  It looks like another streamer day with a long shot at dry flies in the long pools and eddys.  Streamers are definitely your best bet so keep trying different colors, sizes, and sink rates until you find out what the fish are looking for.  There are no wading opportunities so stick to drift boats.  The is no rain in the forecast through the weekend so the rivers should begin to drop and get better each day.

We were hit with a little more rain than expected in the evening and the river flows jumped a bit overnight.  Most of the river flows are dropping again with the Mainstem at Lordville just cresting.  The rivers are up and off color so if you’re going to fish it looks like a streamer day.  We’ll have mostly cloudy skies today with a chance of thunderstorms tonight.  We’re hoping they slide around us.  Wading is not suggested right now so stay in a drift boat.  The rivers should drop quickly once we stop getting rain every other day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 26, 2018

All of the rivers are high and off color this morning but the flows are already dropping.  The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 1,499 cfs.    We just had steady rain yesterday but it came down for hours.  We should see the feeder streams drop quickly and the main rivers should clear.  The West Branch will have the fall color to it if they keep the release high.  We have some light rain in the forecast today and tomorrow but Wunderground is predicting around 1/4″.  The weekend looks good with air temps in the 60’s, clouds, and luckily no rain in the forecast right now.  Today looks like a streamer day but if you’re out there bring a dry fly rod and watch the long, slower edges of tailouts.  You may get lucky and find a few fish eating olives in the afternoon.

Mid Day Update September 25, 2018

The rivers are beginning to come up and there is color coming in from the feeder streams.  Hale Eddy is currently 4,660 cfs and climbing.  Once the rain stops we should peak and begin to drop quickly.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 25, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 1,097.  We woke up to some light, steady rain this morning but so far we’ve received less than was forecasted.  We had about 1/4″ overnight and today’s precip forecast has been dropped to less than 1/2″.  If the rain comes over the course of the day there is a chance of olives.  Streamers will be your best bet starting off but take the time to watch the tailouts of long pools.  The increased release will add a bit more color to the river but not enough to turn the fish off.  If the rain picks up and turns the river off color we’ll do a mid day update.  We have a little more rain in the forecast tomorrow then we look pretty clear through the weekend.

The rivers flows are still dropping slowly this morning.  The release from Cannonsville is still 695 cfs until further notice.  We do have that normal fall “color” coming out of Cannonsville Reservoir but that hasn’t stopped the fish from eating small olives, cahills, and stenos.  Last night was decent in the early evening with the olives making up most of the hatch.  The fish did seem to be eating quite a few of them as emergers just under the surface.  A small wet would have been perfect but if you didn’t have one they would eventually eat the dry on a good drift.  Today should be similar to yesterday with a bit more wind.  We may get some rain overnight- hopefully it misses us!

The rivers have dropped quite a bit since yesterday and things look much better this morning.  Hale Eddy is 1,470 cfs and dropping slowly now.  It’s definitely clear enough to fish dry flies.  The release from Cannonsville is 695 cfs.  Keep an eye out for olives and isonychias.  There are some caddis showing on the West Branch and Mainstem but the Iso spinners are the show stealers if you find them towards dark.  Watch the slow pools and tailouts for the best shot at surface activity.

Streamer fishing was definitely the most effective method yesterday but people did find fish rising giving some people dry fly shots.  The next two day s look clear and cooler so we should see some decent fishing.

We got hit with a storm we didn’t see coming last night.  Wunderground was way off on the 1/4″ predicted and the flow is 2,720 cfs at Hale Eddy this morning.  It has peaked and is dropping quickly already.  It is off color but should recover quickly with a release from Cannonsville of only 695 cfs.  The dry fly fishing was picking up with the lower water but it will take a day or two to get back there.  Looking at the 10 day forecast we shouldn’t see any additional rain that matters until Tuesday. Hopefully they have this forecast correct.  Streamers will be your best bet today.

The release from Cannonsville has been decreased to 818 cfs. The lower water should help concentrate the hatches and give the fish better water to set up and feed in.  We should have a clouds today.  These are the best conditions we’ve seen in a while.  It took while for things to get going yesterday.  Once the sun dropped behind the hills iso spinners, olives, and olive spinners showed up in the slower pools and made the fish happy. Earlier in the day some people found limited success with streamers and wets but it was definitely work to find fish.  A little less than 1/4″ of rain should fall overnight leading into a clear weekend.

The release from Cannonsville has been decreased to 1,097 cfs.  The runoff is still subsiding leaving the flow at Hale Eddy 1,700 and falling slowly this morning.  The lower water should help the fishing by concentrating the bugs on the water a bit more – especially the little olives that have been hatching.  The rivers are starting off a few degrees cooler this morning after last night’s air temps in the 50’s.  We’re still seeing isonychias and some cahills but mostly small olives and small olive spinners in the evening.  Nymphing and wet fly fishing should become more effective as the water drops.  Wunderground is calling for 1/4″ of rain tomorrow but otherwise we’re in for a few days of sun and clouds.

All of the rivers are dropping this morning as the runoff subsides.  We had a brief shower yesterday morning and then it turned into a mix of clouds and sun for the rest of the day.  The West Branch flow peaked by mid afternoon and began to drop.  While there is color in the West Branch from the release there was a lot of color coming in from Oquaga Creek and it looked pretty dirty by mid day.  We’ve already dropped over 1,000 cfs since yesterday and the river is looking much better this morning.  People were throwing streamers yesterday as the water was rising and a few fish were hooked.  There is no significant rain in the forecast for the next few days so we should be in good shape for the weekend.  The cooler air temps should help drop the water temps too.  The release from Cannonsville Reservoir has been dropped back slightly to 1,298 cfs.

It looks like a lot of the rain split East and West of us.  It was mostly a steady light rain from 6 pm on.  The rivers are up this morning but no where near the levels people were predicting.  The flow at hale Eddy is 2,590 and climbing this morning but should level off and begin to drop by this afternoon.  We may see a brief shower or two this morning but that should be over before lunch.  The drop in air temperature is certainly welcome and we should peak around 75 degrees today.  The night time temps should be in the 50’s for most of the week.   The cooler air temps should help drop the water temps.  Hopefully that pushes the fall bugs and the hatches of olives, hebes, and smaller isonychias should get better towards the weekend.
