Delaware River Report / Conditions September 1, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped slightly to 1,407 cfs.  We did have a little rain overnight so some of the flows bumped slightly but it won’t really be noticeable on the river.  We had good cloud cover yesterday with some scattered showers around the area.  Olives, isonychias, and cahills were still our go to flies.  We found rising fish plus fish that were willing to eat isos and cahills blind casted in the riffles and seams.

Today looks like another good fishing day.  Clouds, winds around 7 mph from the south, and a high of 73 degrees.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 31, 2018

It’s the last day of August and the West Branch at the 191 Bridge is 51 degrees this morning.  The air temp dropped and we should peak around 70 degrees today.  Winds will gust around 10 mph from the South and we should see some evening rain totaling 1/10″.  We have decent cloud cover all ready this morning.  We’ve seen good olives over the last days and today certainly looks good for them.  Isonychias have worked well both on rising fish and blind casting.  There are a lot of different Stenocrons out there that can be imitated well with a #14 light cahill pattern.  We’ve come across a lot of fish eating emergers so swinging wets could work really well right now too.  The rest of the weekend looks like a mix of clouds and sun.  Most of the water temps look great throughout the system but the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls peaked at 72 degrees yesterday.  Stick to the other rivers for a while until that one cools down.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 30, 2018

Yesterday was another hot, sunny day.  There were the normal olives with a few isonychias and stenos hatching but it took the fish a while to get happy.  Once the sun dropped behind the hills the fish were a bit more cooperative.  Today looks like a much better fishing day.  We should be 10 degrees cooler with cloud cover and a slight chance of rain.  If we do see rain through the weekend the amounts in the forecast look negligible.  There are spots on the West Branch that you can wade at this level.  The heat wave has broke for the time being and it should be a good weekend with clouds and some showers.

Do not fish the lower Beaverkill.  It’s been peaking over 70 degrees at Cooks Falls for the last few days and is starting off at 68 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 29, 2018

The sun stuck around a lot longer than we would have liked.  We had some clouds move in for brief periods in the afternoon but for the most part we dealt with bright sun and heat.  There were decent olives mixed with some flying ants on the water even in the sunshine.  The isonychias seemed to wait until the sun dropped behind the hills.  We found a few fish early but most of the action we saw was in the last hour and a half of light.  Today looks like the last of the hot summer conditions for a while.  We’re looking at 88 degrees and sunshine today until a front comes through and drops tomorrow’s high back into the 70’s.  We may get the odd thunderstorm today.  Hopefully some clouds will move in early this afternoon.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls hit 70 degrees yesterday so stick higher on that system or the tailwaters for decent temps.  The rest of the week looks like much better fishing weather.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 28, 2018

There is still some runoff coming down the feeder streams but the West Branch has leveled off for the most part.  The release is 1,500 cfs and Hale Eddy is 1,730 this morning.  These are great levels for floating but there are some areas you can wade.  Olives and isonychias mad up most of the bugs we saw last night but there were flying ants, a few sulphurs, and cahills hatching too.  The higher release have kept the rivers cold.  The clouds stuck around most of the afternoon and the river fished very well for August.  We’re still in the heat wave but the weather should break on Thursday.  If you plan on fishing the Beaverkill check the water temps first today.  It hit 68 degrees yesterday and may climb higher in today’s sunshine.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 27, 2018

Yesterday was another day of sun and with a few clouds.  Streamer fishing picked up when the sun wasn’t on the water.  People found fish rising to isonychias, olives, and some flying ants.  The release from Cannonsville is 1,500 cfs. It looks like we have stopped spilling so the river should level out.  The feeder streams are still pushing some water but they are leveling out too.  Water temperatures look great throughout the system so there are lots of options.  People are wading the West Branch in spots and doing well.  There are some spots that you can wade at these levels.

We have a heat wave for the next few days but it should break on Thursday leading into a pleasant weekend.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 26, 2018

We had decent clouds most of yesterday  with the sun breaking through in the late afternoon.  Olives and isonychias were the main hatches but there were flying ants on the water and the fish were eating them.  Streamers are still producing for some people but seem to be working better on overcast days.  Switch colors and sizes until you start finding fish.  Today should be similar without the afternoon sun.  There is a slight chance of a pm shower but the forecasted amount is negligible.  The flows are still dropping throughout the system and people are finding spots to wade.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 25, 2018

The release from Cannonsville is 1,500 cfs with 85 cfs still spilling over the top of the dam.  The flows are still dropping throughout the system.  There is no real rain in the forecast so we should see all of the rivers continue to drop over the next few days.  The releases will likely remain high for a while to drop the reservoir levels.  A lot of people are throwing streamers but we’re seeing more fish rise as the water drops.  Mostly blue wing olives with a few isonychias mixed in.  Today looks like another day in the 70’s with some sun and clouds mixed.  Winds will stay under 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 24, 2018

The flows are dropping nicely and the rivers look good this morning.  The release from Cannonsville is still 1,500 and will probably stay there until the reservoir levels drop a bit.  The flow at Hale Eddy is 2,370 and dropping slowly as the feeder stream flows drop.  The cold releases and cooler nights have helped the water temps throughout the system.  We should be in the 70’s with a bit of sun today but the night temps are dropping back into the 50’s.  There’s no appreciable rain in the forecast so we should continue to see the river flows drop over the next few days.  We’ve been finding quite a few olives on the West Branch mixed with a few isonychias.  Streamers have worked well in the higher flows.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 21, 2018

The river dropped quite a bit over the last 24 hours but both reservoirs are still spilling.  The Cannonsville spill is hot at Stilesville until it mixes with the colder release and runoff and cools down to 60 degrees at Hale Eddy.  The release from from Cannonsville is 1,500 cfs.  There is 1,211 cfs spilling.  Give it a few days for the runoff and spill to subside a bit more.  The Beaverkill flow has dropped under 1,000 cfs and the temp looks good at Cooks Falls.  There is a chance of rain this morning but the amount looks negligible.  We have a chance of seeing a little over 1/4″ overnight, followed by a little rain tomorrow.  After that we should be dry through Sunday.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 20, 2018

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are spilling.  The Cannonsville spill is hot at Stilesville until it mixes with the colder release and runoff and cools down to 61 degrees at Hale Eddy.  The river is clearing up and there is no rain in the forecast today.  We do have 1/4″ in the forecast tomorrow but the rest of the week looks clear.

Give it a few days for the runoff and spill to subside.  If you do come today check the water temps, be in a boat, and make sure whoever is rowing knows what they’re doing.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 19, 2018

The water is high throughout the system this morning.  It’s going to take a few days to calm down and get back to fishable levels.  For safety take a couple days off from fishing up here and let the water levels drop a bit.  We were hit with some decent rain yesterday and Cannonsville Reservoir is spilling.  So far about half the flow at Stilesville is warm spill and the other half is cold release.  The Stilesville temp is way up at 70 degrees, but the runoff below seems to be colder and is keeping the water temp in check at Hale Eddy.  The air temp will be cool today around 70 degrees and we should keep the cloud cover.  That’s good news for the water temps.  If you are out there check the water temps with a thermometer before you fish.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls is 62 degrees today which is a great change from the last few weeks.  All of the rivers in the system are up.  We have no real rain in the forecast for the next couple of days so hopefully that gives the system a chance to come back down.

Despite the high water the Get Trahed crew got 55 tires and over a dumpster worth of trash out of the system yesterday!
