Delaware River Report / Conditions June 21, 2018

Yesterday’s cooler air temp and cloud cover helped keep the water temps in check on the West Branch.  We had about 30 seconds of rain that didn’t even have a chance to soak into the ground.  Caddis seemed active for most of the day offering some dry fly activity.  There were some sulphurs and cahill mixed in and we are seeing just enough of the big bugs hatching to keep them on the list.  There have been some olives in the morning before the sun hits the water.  Today will be warmer and brighter than yesterday.  There should be some active caddis during the day but bring the nymph rigs to work the riffles until evening just in case there is a mid day lull.  There are some spinners over Homepool this morning so if you head out early you may get lucky in some of the big pools before the sun hits them.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 20, 2018

Yesterday started off with a little cloud cover but gave way by mid morning to bright sun and wind.  The wind dropped in the evening.  The best dry fly fishing was early and late in the day.  Sulphurs, olives, and caddis made up the bulk of the hatches although a few drakes came off towards dark.  There were really, really,  good caddis flights right around dark.  Mid day nymphed well in the lower water.  The bugs are still active so the fish are still finding them between hatches.  We have a great change in the weather day – we will be way cooler than we have been.  Wunderground shows us with clouds, light winds, and an air temp of 73.  That sounds really nice after the late Summer conditions we’ve had lately.  The lower East Branch, Mainstem, and lower Beaverkill all got too hot to fish yesterday.  The lower West Branch in Hancock heated up as well.  The cooler temps and clouds will help but it’s time to fish with your thermometer.  If the forecast holds the cooler weather and periods of light rain over the weekend will help out a lot.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 19, 2018

While we had the bright sun and hot temps yesterday there was just enough wind and clouds coming through to keep it reasonably comfortable in the shade.   It felt great standing next to the cold river.  There were some fish eating olives in the morning before the sun really hit the water.  Once the sun was up it was a nymphing wet fly game until evening.  In the evening it’s still a mix of sulphurs, cahills, olives, caddis, and a few march browns and gray foxes.  There have been some Isonychias around but we haven’t seen great numbers of them yet.  The release from Cannonsville has been dropped back to 415 cfs.  The Mainstem, Lower East Branch, and lower Beaverkill all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday.  Stick to the West Branch or Upper East Branch to protect the fish and find the best hatching.  Today is going to be in the high 70’s with sun.  We did get a little rain overnight but it soaked right into the ground.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 18, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 665 cfs.  The timing looks like it was done to help cool the Mainstem during today’s heat.  Wunderground has us peaking around 88 degrees today with a little over 1/4″ of rain.  That’s a lower temp and more rain than the forecast was originally calling for.  The forecast is calling for scattered thunderstorms so they will either hit us or hit 20 miles away. Definitely pack a raincoat just in case.  It will be a hot one until the storms push through so bring a lot of water on the river.  Nymphing and swinging wets was the best bet for most of yesterday until the sun started dropping.  By late afternoon we started seeing caddis mixed with a few sulphurs.  Cahills and a few Green Drakes made a brief appearance and the sulphurs were picking up at dark.  Most of our dry fly fish ate a #16 tan cornfed caddis.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 17, 2018

The bright sun and warmer air temps definitely made it feel like summer.  It also fished like summer yesterday.  Nymphing or wet flies during the day with the dry fly action coming after the sun dropped behind the hills.  Once it started the fishing was very good with sulphurs and cahills making up most of the hatch.  There were also some olives, march browns, and green drakes mixed in.  Today’s weather looks similar to yesterdays but a bit warmer.  In these conditions the spinners can fall at dark or even in the morning.  Mornings can be good dry fly fishing if you find a spinner fall or left over night time spinners still filtering through the big slow pools.  Keep an eye on the water for subtle rises.

Even though we just put away our Hendrickson box it is mid June. It is sunny and hot outside.  Stick to the river sections that are closer to the dams or the headwaters that stay cool.   The lower Beaverkill and the lower East Branch water temps peaked over 70 degrees yesterday.  Lordville peaked at 69 but traditionally that gauge always seemed to read colder than the river actually was so we’re calling that one 70 plus degrees too.  The best thing is to avoid those rivers until it cools back down or the releases are increased.  Carry a thermometer and check water temps before you start fishing.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 16, 2018

Yesterday was a mix of sunshine, cloud cover, wind, and calm.  That pushed the bugs back to later in the evening which seems a little more “normal” than the mid afternoon hatches we’ve been seeing.  The caddis are still active during the afternoon so you may find some dry fly activity over the riffles where the fish feel more secure to rise in the sun.  Starting off with nymphs or wets would make sense this morning.  The fish should be working nymphs and caddis pupa in the faster runs.  Today will be sunny with an air temp close to 80 degrees.  Last night was cool so the water temps are starting this morning about the same temp as yesterday.  We’ve been seeing March Brown Spinners at night but haven’t seen them hit the water in great numbers yet.  The warmer weather and sun should push them over the next few days.

The wind was tough yesterday but the bugs hatched and the fish ate anyway.  It was another odd day when the best hatching on the West Branch was mid morning through mid afternoon.  The sulphurs were coming off and the fish were eating them in the riffles.  They were being blown off the water on the flats.  There was enough down time that you could make a cast and cover the fish.  In the later afternoon into early evening we had more Cahills, Green Drakes, Gray Fox, and a few March Browns coming off.  They were still eating a lot of the emergers underneath but we stuck with dries and found enough fish eating on top to keep it interesting.  The caddis were active in between the wind gusts too.  Today looks like it will be similar to yesterday.  Saturday looks great with winds only 5 – 10 mph.  The air temp will climb into the high 70’s but it will be so nice not having the wind.

We had cloud cover all yesterday.  There were some caddis and sporadic mayflies out with some fish taking advantage of them on top.  But overall it was a good day for the wet fly and nymphers.  In the afternoon we found a lot of fish eating underneath and chasing emergers.  They would break the surface occasionally or eat off the top every five minutes or so.  Timing was more important than pattern.  The Green Drakes. March Browns, and Gray Fox came off as the sun dropped.  A lot of those emergers were being taken in the water column too.  They were eating off the top enough that if you covered them you could catch them.  People who stayed out real late were rewarded with coffin flies.  All of the rivers saw a minor bump in flow from last night’s rain. The water temperatures dropped on all of the rivers too, giving a lower starting points this morning.  We’re back to sunshine today with an air temp peaking around 72.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 13, 2018

We woke up to some light rain this morning.  Looking at the hourly forecast it should be off and and on light rain throughout the day.  It’s been a while since we’ve seen any rain so the 1/4″ we’ll see by tomorrow morning will soak into the ground.  The release from Cannonsville Reservoir is still listed at 460 cfs but the Stilesville gauge shows 518 cfs.  We’re in great shape for wading and floating.  The light rain and cloud cover should help the fishing today.  Besides the olive hatches, the weather should push the other hatches a little earlier in the day and make the fish feel more comfortable eating mid afternoon.  We had sporadic hatches during the day yesterday but the wind was stronger than the 5 – 9 mph in the forecast.  March Browns, cahills, and caddis were around in the sunshine but the mayflies got off the water quick and it seemed the fish were hesitant to stay up.  Nymphing or swinging wets was definitely the way to go until the sulphurs hatched in the late evening.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 12, 2018

Yesterday fished well but the timing was a little unpredictable.  There were some clouds rolling through but for the most part we had sunshine most of the day.  Despite the bright sun the best hatching and activity we saw was mid morning to mid-afternoon.  There were sulphurs, caddis, cahills, and a few green drakes and march browns coming off.  The fish were on them pretty good for a couple of hours.  Later in the afternoon we still had a few bugs hatching but you had to hunt for fish eating on top.  It fished, it was just a little backwards from what we would have predicted with the weather.  Today will be similar to yesterday with fewer clouds.  The air temp will reach the low 70’s.  Winds will pick up in the afternoon to around 10 mph and then drop back in the evening.  Tomorrow looks great with clouds and some rain totaling about 1/4″.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 11, 2018

The clouds stuck around all day yesterday.  The sulphur hatches are getting stronger but the timing as been dependent on which river you are fishing.  Some people are reporting huge numbers of sulphurs in the afternoon while others are seeing them in the evening.  Cahills, caddis, and March Browns should round out the menu.  There are still Coffin Flies at night.  We’re seeing some early but the guys who are staying out real late are getting some big payoffs.  They’ve been on some rivers for a while now and should be slowing down.  You may run into some Brown Drakes after dark.  Today looks like a totally different day with an air temp near 70 and sunshine.  Winds should be negligible.  That may push the hatches a little later in the day but the caddis should be happy in the sun.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 10, 2018

We’re hearing mixed reports from yesterday.  The bright sun and warmer weather seems to have moved the main hatches into the evening.  There are still caddis and a few mayflies offering some daytime opportunities but nymphing and swinging wet flies in the riffles should produce best when the sun in out.  The flows throughout the system are about the same as yesterday morning and the river temps are all starting off only a degree or two lower than than yesterday morning.  The last few days have been described as “mostly cloud” by Wunderground.  We basically had a periods of sun and come cloud cover.  Today they describe as “cloudy” so hopefully the sun doesn’t show.  There are still a lot of different bugs on the water so be prepared.  Some sections are still seeing Coffin Flies at night so definitely carry a few of those just in case they hit the water.
