Delaware River Report / Conditions July 14, 2017

We had a little rain overnight that has continued through this morning.  The West Branch looks good with just a small bump at Hale Eddy.  The lower East Branch has climbed the most running just under 1,000 cfs right now.  We should see some additional rain today with a few breaks in between.  Olives were once again the bug of choice last night.  We’re doing better fishing the smaller sizes so definitely carry flies #20 and smaller.  There are still a few isonychias, sulphurs, and cahills on the lower West Branch and the sulphur hatch has picked up a bit on the upper river.  Water temperatures are great on the entire West Branch and upper East Branch but too high for trout on the lower East Branch and Mainstem.  The release from Cannonsville is 401 cfs.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 13, 2017

It looks like most of yesterday’s rain feel above Cannonsville.  The flow at Walton jumped to 748 cfs this morning while the flow below the dam remains around 400 cfs.  The fog made it tough last night but there were some fish eating the olives.  Nymphing seemed to be a better choice during the day although there were some sulphurs mixed in too.  We may see some thunderstorms today but most of them have been going north of us (like last night).  The rivers look fine this morning.  The water temperature on the West Branch is great starting off at 58 degrees this morning at the 191 Bridge.  The lower East Branch, lower Beaverkill, and Mainstem are all too warm to fish for trout. Mainstem temperatures are looking good for smallmouth around Callicoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 12, 2017

We are hearing rumors that DEC may run some kind of dye test on the West Branch this afternoon around 3:30.  If you see a green tint to the river it’s no big deal. We’ll try to find out more about it.

We had a little rain overnight and the flows on the East Branch and the West Branch above Cannonsville have bumped slightly.  We should see some additional storms this afternoon dropping a little over 1/4″ of rain.  Most of that should soak into the ground so the rivers should be fine.  The cloud cover and light wind should make this a decent day to be on the river.  Yesterday was all about small olives.  Even in the afternoon sun some pools had fish rising and the activity picked up towards dark.  There were a few sulphurs, isonychias, and cahills around but there were a lot of #20 -26 olive duns and spinners on the water.  The lower Beaverkill, lower East Branch, and Mainstem are getting too warm to fish.  Water temperatures look good on the entire West Branch.  The release from Cannonsville remains at 398 cfs this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 11, 2017

The release from Cannonsville has been cut back this morning to 401 cfs.  We had a little rain overnight but not enough to bump the flows.  We may see a thunderstorm or two today but forecasted precipitation amounts are negligible.  We should have decent cloud cover for most of the afternoon.  That will help keep the West Branch water temperature in check.  We dropped a few degrees and the West at the 191 Bridge is starting off at a nice 55 degrees this morning.  Hopefully the cloud cover and light storms will bring out the olives and sulphurs a little earlier in the afternoon. Winds look great great today gusting only to 7 mph.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 10, 2017

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 699 cfs this morning.  Water temperatures are in good shape on the entire West Branch and Upper East Branch.  There were some fish rising in yesterday’s sun but things picked up after the clouds rolled in and the sund dropped a bit in the evening.  Sulphurs and little olives were the main bugs with a few isonychias and cahills here and there.  Nymphing deeper drop offs has been productive during the day.  Today looks like another good day on the water with sun early changing to some clouds in the afternoon.  We may see a very brief, light rain shower later but it shouldn’t change the flows.

699 cfs is still good for wading and floating. and it’s great for the river!

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 9, 2017

We ended up with some decent showers yesterday but they were brief and barely caused a bump in flows.  We did find fair numbers of olives right after the storms.  Sulphurs and isonychas hatched later on some stretches.  Nymphing and swinging wet flies has been working during the day.  Look for decent riffles with good drop offs offering the fish some protection.  The weather is going to be clear and warmer today.  Pick an afternoon spot that gives you early shade and be patient.  The upcoming week looks great with good cloud cover and light rain.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 8, 2017

We’ve had a few brief showers but the rivers are essentially in the same shape as yesterday.  The West Branch is in the best shape with a release of 600 cfs this morning.  The cold release is keeping the water temperatures low throughout it’s length.  We are still fishing the same mix of small olives, sulphus, cahills, and isonychias.  There are some caddis around but they seem over shadowed by the little olives.  Nymphing and swinging wet flies have been productive during the day.  Dry fly fishing has been better during cloud cover, in shaded areas, and before or after the sun hits the water.  We should have some clouds around today with the possibility of very light rain mid day.  We’ll be a bit cooler with air temperatures in the 70’s.  The lower East Branch, lower Beaverkill, and Mainstem are all warm so definitely check those with your thermometer before fishing.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 7, 2017

We’ve had a bit of rain this morning but it looks like most of it has soaked into the ground.  The creeks are clear, the Beaverkill and East Branch have actually dropped a bit, and the West Branch is steady with just over 600 at Hale Eddy.  It definitely looks like an olive day with the overcast sky and light intermittent rain.  We may see a little over 1/4″ today but most of the storms have been tracking north of us lately.  We should also see a few more sulphurs and isonychias hatching during the day if the weather holds.  Winds look great today peaking around 8  mph.  It looks like it will be a really good day to be on the river.  West Branch water temperatures look great.  The lower East Branch, lower Beaverkill, and lower Mainstem are all peaking a little high to fish for trout so check them with a thermometer before you start.  Water temperatures in Callicoon look great for smallmouth if you’re looking for something different to do.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 6, 2017

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped back to 600 cfs, still making for great wading and floating on the West Branch. The lower East Branch, Beaverkill and the Main Stem are still warm. If the weather forecast is to be believed, there should be clouds developing this afternoon with a possibility of some thunderstorms. The rainfall amounts look minor and probably won’t affect the levels. Sulphurs, olives, cahills, and isonychias continue to be the most prevalent hatches.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 5, 2017

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 700 cfs. The level is good for both wading and floating and the increase will keep the West Branch cool. The lower East Branch, Beaverkill and Main Stem are warm, check the temperature with a thermometer first if you’re fishing for trout. Today looks like another sunny, warm day – get out there early or stay past dark if you can. Sulphurs, olives, cahills, and isonychias are still the hatches of choice.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 4, 2017

Happy Fourth of July! Yesterday’s sun made the fish wary. Look in the shaded areas for rising fish and use stealth when approaching them. Blind casting in the riffles and along the seams can produce fish. Check your sub-surface flies often for algae if you’re fishing higher up in the system. Today’s weather looks like a carbon copy of yesterday’s with sun and light winds. We’re seeing the same mix of sulphurs, olives, cahills, and isonychias out there with some hatching earlier in the day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 3, 2017

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped to 500 cfs this morning.  This is a great level for both wading and floating so we are in good shape this morning.  Water temperatures are decent on the West Branch due to the cold water release.  There was the usual mix of sulphurs, olives, cahills, and isonychias but the hatches seemed a bit spread out.  Blind fishing isonychias and cahills in the riffles produced some fish and nymphing was decent in the fast runs and drop offs.  Today should be a nice day on the water with partly cloudy skies and air temperatures in the upper 70’s.  The lower Beaverkill, lower East Branch, and Mainstem at Lordville are all staring off at 67 degrees this morning so if you’re near those areas use a thermometer before you fish.
