Delaware River Report / Conditions October 30, 2016

Yesterday felt like early September and we are coming off a really warm night.  The water temperatures are up from yesterday morning and that should help the hatching.  There were some olives and a few isonychias out yesterday but streamers and nymphs were definitely more productive.  The Cannonsville release is 574 this morning.  The West Branch, lower East Branch, and Mainstem are all in decent shape for floating and wading.  We may get a light shower or two today with wind gusts staying under 10 mph.  Not a bad looking fishing day for the end of October.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 29, 2016

The release from Cannonsville is increasing this morning.   The East Branch flow at Downsville is also up this morning at 478 cfs.  The West Branch flow should be settled down by this afternoon.  Air temperatures will approach 60 degrees which will feel like summer after the past few days.  We may get some olives in the afternoon but streamers and nymphs will be your best bet.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 28, 2016

The release from Cannonsville is 308 cfs this morning.  We went from 100 cfs yesterday to over 1,000 cfs overnight, back to 300 cfs this morning.  The lower West Branch flow should fall throughout the day and settle in by late afternoon.  The temperatures are higher on the WB than the EB so hatching should be a bit better.  There were olives hatching yesterday afternoon on the West during the rain.  We should have overcast today with little precipitation.  We are on a bit of a warming trend and should see good temperatures by Saturday.

The release from Cannonsville is 90 cfs.  The flow at Downsville is 77 cfs.  We woke up to some light snow coming down in the higher elevations.  That should switch to rain mid morning when air temperatures climb to the low 40’s.  We shouldn’t see much accumulation and it should melt fairly quick.  This is just a brief cold spell and air temperatures will climb back into the 50’s on Saturday.  Nymphing should be good today but definitely keep an eye out for olives in the lower water

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 26, 2016

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped to 326 cfs as of 8 am this morning.  It has been dropping around 100 cfs each hour but should settle in by mid morning.  It will take a while for the water levels to drop on the lower West and Mainstem.  The East Branch release has also been cut leaving a flow of 259 cfs at Downsville.  There is no projected release from Lake Wallenpaupack.  We do have some rain and possible snow in the higher elevations over the next couple of days.  Day time air temperatures will be in the 40’s and possibly even in the 50’s on the weekend.  The lower water may concentrate the small blue winged olives on the West and East.  There are still a couple of isonychias around too.  Wet fly and nymph fishing should pick up and streamers have still been effective.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 25, 2016

The release from Cannonville is 910 cfs.  The release from Pepacton has been increased this morning and the flow at Downsville is now 478 cfs.  The Beaverkill is slowing dropping back as the runoff subsides but it’s really cool to see the East Branch flow at Fishs Eddy at 644 cfs this morning.  People have found some fish on the lower EB over the last few weeks so it may be worth a look.  We’ll have some wind to deal with again today but if you can get in a calm area there have been a mix of olives hatching with a few isonychias still.  Streamers have definitely been the most productive method followed by nymphing.  Air temperatures will be in the 40’s today with light rain / heavy mist at times.  Some of the higher elevations may see a quick snow shower but so far we haven’t seen a flake in the lower elevations along the river.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 24, 2016

The release from Cannonsville is 1,038 cfs this morning. The flow at Downsville is still 329 cfs.  Despite the recent rains it looks like they still need additional water from Cannonsville and Pepacton to meet the downstream flow targets.  We were hit with a decent downpour overnight but it must have been brief since none of the freestone flows budged.  The forecast for the week looks like cooler temperatures with a little precipitation thrown in. Overall not bad for late October.  Winds have been up a bit over the last few days but there are still olives hatching with fish eating them on the warmer afternoons.  Streamers are definitely a good bet today with the increased release mixed with the slight runoff.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 23, 2016

It looks like most of the rain either missed us or soaked into the ground.  The rivers came us a little bit from the runoff but the releases have been increased to meet the downstream flow targets.  The release from Cannonsville is 753 this morning and the East Branch flow at Downsville is 329 cfs.  We are coming off a cold night so the ater temperatures have dropped back throughout the system.  The air temperatures should climb into the 50’s by this afternoon.  The wind did not miss us.  The best bet yesterday was streamers fished slow and it looks like that will be the answer again today.  Nymphing could pay off since the color of the rivers is pretty decent this morning.  The forecast is calling for winds around 14 mph which is much better than the amount originally predicted. This will throw some more leaves in the river but yesterday’s wind did a pretty good job of clearing a lot of them.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 22, 2016

A lot of the rain either missed us or was delayed yesterday.  The release from Cannonsville is now 567 this morning.  It looks like they bumped it up over 1,000 cfs last night but have dropped it back now that the rain is here.  So far the rain has been nice and steady and not overwhelming.  We should end up just shy of 1/2″ today.  So far the Easter drainage flows haven’t budged much.  It’s definitely cooler out there now that the front has pushed in.  We’ll see air temperatures in the low 50’s today.  Winds will be high – gusting to 20 mph.  Look for wind protected areas as your best bet.  Nymphing and streamers will likely be the most productive methods.  There were some olives out yesterday so if you do get a break in the wind keep an eye out.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 21, 2016

The release from Cannonsville is 89 cfs this morning.  We were likely dropped in anticipation of rain making up the difference for the downstream flow targets.  It seems that most of the rain in yesterday’s forecast missed us and what did fall soaked right into the ground.  The forecast is calling for 1/2″ of rain today and another 1/2″ tomorrow.  Let’s hope.

There are redds on the West Branch and Mainstem.  There is no way de-watering the West and Main during the spawn makes for “Good Neighbors” to the downstream users.  Looking at the graphs for the last month it’s hard to see where there should any good press.  For years the release has been dropped in anticipation of rain and for years we have watched that rain miss us.  Here we are again.  As a side note the credit for the steady Summer flows goes to Mother Nature under the FFMP.
