Delaware River Report / Conditions June 10, 2015

Yesterday was a tough day for hatching.  The water was up and down and off color but the fish were eating streamers.  We had some additional rain last night / early this morning but the rivers are beginning to drop.  The Mainstem may rise a little more this morning before it peaks.  We do have color in the rivers today but the upper East Branch in Downsville and the West Branch above Oquaga Creek should still be low and clear.  The system should clear throughout the day as the water drops.  Accuweather is calling for bright sun, warm air temps, and very light winds today.
The cool overnight air temps and increased flow helped drop the Mainstem water temperatures.  The Main at Lordville peaked around 69 degrees yesterday afternoon.  Even though the temps are starting off at 63 degrees this morning double checks the temps this afternoon with your thermometer.

We were hit by some pretty heavy rains last night bringing most of the rivers in the system up. The flows have begun to drop back this morning.  Accuweather is calling for an additional 1/4″ of rain scattered throughout today- hopefully it hits us.  We’re looking at air temps in the mid 70’s today with moderate winds.  The rivers look good from the bridges this morning with a little color coming in near the creek mouths.  The flow on the lower East Branch is still rising this morning so we’ll have to wait and see if more color is coming down from the Beaverkill System.  The West Branch is falling right now and looks good.
Sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias are the most predominant mayflies.  There are still some brown drakes hatching at night and / or early morning.  Tan and dark charcoal caddis have been hatching too.  The cloud cover should help the daytime fishing today.

Today looks like a little olive day.  We woke up this morning to overcast skies and rain.  The air temp should stay in the low 70’s so the water temperatures should not climb as fast or as high as they have over the past few days.  The lower East and the Mainstem are starting off a little warmer than we’d like to see but the rain just started and hasn’t had any effect on the flows yet. Keep and eye on the gauges for the latest information.  Hopefully we see all the rivers in the system rise throughout the day.  We should get a total of 1/4″ of water this morning with the possibility of thunderstorms adding more.  Accuweather is calling for 3/4″  of rain overnight which would be awesome for the rivers.  Along with olives definitely carry isonychia patterns on days like this.

The cool overnight air temps helped the system this morning and our water temps are starting of a degree or two lower than this time yesterday.  The sun is already shining and the fog is burning off quickly so if you want to fish the Mainstem hit it early.  Lordville water temps peaked over 70 degrees yesterday afternoon and we expect the same thing to happen today.  It is 65 degrees this morning on the Mainstem.  The West Branch at the 191 Bridge peaked around 66 degrees yesterday afternoon.
Yesterday was tough fishing in the sun.  Nymphing worked well during the day with a very light scattered hatch of sulphurs and stenos at dark.

We are starting off the day with higher water temperatures again so it’s time to fish with your thermometer.  The forecast is calling for the sun to break out this morning and stay with us all day, air temps in the 70’s, and light winds with gusts to 11 mph.  The hatches seem to be either earlier or later in the day due to the water temps.  We are seeing a good mix of little olives, cahills, sulphurs, and isonychias.  Don’t leave the river too early.  During the day nymphing has been effective with some fish rising on shaded banks.

Please keep an eye on the water temps today.  If the sun does pop the rivers will heat up quickly.

Yesterday was tough fishing despite the cool weather and cloud cover..  Some sections had decent hatches in the evening while other sections had a sparse collection of caddis, sulphurs, and cahills.  The sections that fished well had the same bugs, just better quantities.  Overall nymphing seemed to be the most productive method during the day.  Today we are looking at warmer air temps with highs reaching 78 degrees with a chance of some rain later in the afternoon.  The weather report is different on each channel so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.  Hopefully the rain hits us to help us get through the warmer weather and keep the reservoirs filled.

Yesterday was tough with a lot of bright sun, a few bugs, and a lot one one and two time risers.  There didn’t seem to be a lot of any one bug but we did see cahills, olives, sulphurs, large dark caddis, and isonychias out there.  They key seemed to be covering a riser quickly which really camde down to being in the right place at the right time and taking your shots as they came.  Nymphing did work well in the riffles during the day.  We did not see a lot of spinners at dark so hopefully that changes tonight.
Today”s forecast looks a little better with more clouds, air temperatures in the high 60’s, and a very light shower moving in overnight.

We are coming off another cool night so the system is in good shape this morning.  The clouds hung around all day but very little rain fell.  The cloud cover did help keep the rivers cool and the fish happy.  We had a good mix of bugs yesterday beginning with small olives in the morning and sulphurs in the evening.  Isonychias and cahills are coming off sporadically during the day offering some mid day activity- especially in shaded areas.  We’ve removed march browns, gray fox, and green drakes from the hatch list but if you are in the upper sections of the system I would suggest carrying them still. Especially spinner patterns.
Today’s forecast is calling for an air temperature high of 70, little wind, and some sun.

The cool weather has given the rivers some relief.  While most of the rain missed us we did receive some mostly on the East Branch drainage again.  The rivers have come up a little and are beginning to fall back this morning.  Today’s forecast is calling for air temps in the 60’s, cloud cover, with a little light rain.  It looks  like a decent fishing day.
Yesterday the olives hatched well in the morning and again in the afternoon.  Lots of small olives size # 20 -24.  We did have hatches of cahills, isonychias, sulphurs, and the dark caddis for a while too.  The sulphurs really came into their own at dark so don’t leave the river too early.  All in all it was a good day to be on the river.

The Cannonsville release was increased to 224 cfs this morning.
Yesterday’s overcast skies and last night cool air temps have definitely helped the water temperatures this morning.  The temps are still dropping and we are looking at another overcast day with some light rain and air temps in the mid 60’s.  We should be okay on most of the system today but check the Mainstem and the lower East Branch with your thermometer if you’re headed to those rivers.  A lot of the rain missed us yesterday so the rivers are clear and wadeable this morning.  There is more rain forecasted over the next three days.  Hopefully the storms don’t miss us and we keep the flows up.

We had decent numbers of isonychias yesterday but most were crawling out on the rocks.  Sulphurs, dark caddis, stenos / cahills, and small olive made up the bulk of the mayflies towards dark.  March browns, green drakes, and gray foxes are coming to an end but we still have spinners around offering decent fishing at night.  Nymphing was decent during the day and swinging isonychia wet flies worked for some people mid afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 31, 2015

The rain fell last night but so far most of the precipitation seems to be going straight into the ground.  We are expecting an additional 1/2″ or so today that should help the system.  The 5:45 am update at the Lordville gauge showed a temperature of 72 degrees.  The Mainstem and lower East Branch are too warm to fish this morning.  The lower West Branch is 66 degrees already so we suggest leaving that alone too.  The Upper West Branch and Upper East Branch are really the only two choices this morning.  The air temps should be lower today which added to the cloud cover and rain should help us out over the next few days.  Coll nights will help tremendously too.
Fishing was tough yesterday in the bright sun and the evening rains hurt the potential spinner falls.  Hopefully the cloud cover and scattered storms push some cornutas today.
We should get additional water released tomorrow under the FFMP but our guess is it will be a negligible amount.

We are looking at another tough day today but it looks like some relief may be on it’s way tonight.  The lower sections of the branches and the Mainstem are starting off warm to hot this morning.  The Lordville gauge is showing 69 degrees at the 4:45 am update.  The forecast is calling for the air temperature to reach 80 degrees with mostly sun and a brief shower moving in later.  The lower sections are going to cook today so stay above Hale Eddy and Harvard for fishable temperatures.  Nymphing will likely be the best option during the sun and heat.  We should see some little olives hatching if the rain moves through this afternoon.  Blind casting Isonychias has also been productive in some riffles.
We should get more rain overnight which will certainly help.  Cooler air temperatures are also on the way so we should be in decent shape early in the week.
