Delaware River Report / Conditions August 30, 2014
The release from Cannonsville Reservoir was increased to 724 cfs as of 7 am this morning. According to the recording this release will last until further notice. This release looks like it’s being used to cover the flow target at Montague NJ so keep an eye on the Stilesville gauge for changes. If we get enough rain or if they are going to begin releasing from Lake Wallenpaupack on Tuesday they may drop our release over the weekend. The flow at Hale Eddy will continue to climb this morning and level out just under 800 cfs. Wading is still possible at this level- just choose your spots carefully. last nights fishing was decent with lots of olives and fish were on them. The wind stayed down all day which was a nice change from Thursday.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 29, 2014
The high wind made dry fly fishing extremely tough yesterday. Accuweather had called for winds between 10 and 20 mph and they actually go that one correct. During the day most of the bugs were blown off the the water and nymphing was definitely the best option. Things did calm down right before dark and more Psuedos hatched offering some dry fly fishing in the slower sections of the pools. Today they are calling for winds between 3 and 4 mph hour- lets hope they are correct two days in a row. We should be cool today with air temps in the mid 70s and some sun with a few clouds. Make sue you have your sulphurs, summer stenos, and lots of pseudos. Isonychias are still working well in some riffles. The cool night last night helped the East Branch at Fishs Eddy and the Mainstem at Lordville- both are starting off in the low 60s this morning. The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 54 degrees.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 28, 2014
Yesterday’s humidity made it feel a lot hotter than it actually was and made the cool air coming off the river feel great. There were some trico spinners around mid afternoon but not enough to get the fish really interested. The cool nights are still putting a damper on that hatch with the spinners coming much later in the day than expected. We had the usual small olives, summer stenos, and sulphurs towards dark but the fog made finding the risers tough. The cloud cover stuck around most of the day threatening rain but we never got hit with any precipitation. Watch the water temperatures if you wander away from the West Branch or the Upper East Branch. The East Branch at Fish’s Eddy peaked over 70 degrees, and the Mainstem at Lordville peaked around 69 degrees. The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 54 degrees this morning and peaked around 59 degrees yesterday afternoon so we are in fantastic shape for the end of August.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 27, 2014
Yesterday was definitely hotter than we’ve become accustomed to lately. The bright sun kept the fish down during the heat of the day making nymphing the best technique. As the sun dropped we saw our usual hatches of pseudos, sulphurs, and summer stenos. There are a few Isonychias around so definitely carry a few to blind cast in the riffles. Today looks like another hot day in the 80s with some sun giving way to showers in the afternoon. Days with high humidity, heat, and light rain can be fantastic flying ant days so be prepared. Sometimes they are hard to see on the water so take a close look at the surface film if you see fish rising but don’t see any insects. The lower East Branch and Mainstem at Lordville are starting off with warmer water temperatures this morning so if you are planning to fish those sections check it with a thermometer first. The West Branch is in great shape for the end of August with a water temperature of 56 degrees under the 191 Bridge in Hancock.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 26, 2014
We had more sun yesterday than we’ve seen in a while and it definitely felt hot if you were out standing in it. Nymphing was decent on the lower West Branch and Upper Mainstem in the morning. We are mostly fishing #14-20 Copper Johns and Pheasant Tails to match the size of the naturals that are active. If you want to go bigger we have had fish eating Isonychia wet flies in the riffles. As evening came we had more surface activity with small blue winged olives, sulphurs, a few summer stenos, and some flying ants. Again the small olives were the star of the show. It looks like today will repeat of yesterday with mostly sun and warm temperatures. The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 56 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 25, 2014
Yesterday afternoon started off with a nice flying ant drop that had the fish interested in eating on top for a few hours. Most of the ants on the water were bigger than earlier in the week allowing us to fish #16 – 18 which was a welcome change. There we some psuedos and summer stenos on the water around the same time but they didn’t hold the attention of the fish like the ants. The evening was finished with a nice sulphur hatch going into dark. The Upper West Branch is still seeing some mid-day sulphur hatches and the reports yesterday mentioned less green slime in the water. Accuweather is calling for warmer air temps today with a few clouds. The water temp under the 191 Bridge is 56 degrees this morning and peaked around 60 degrees yesterday.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 24, 2014
Last night we saw another strong hatch of olives on the West Branch. The light intermittent rain and cloud cover made for classic conditions for a mix of pseudos and small deficiens. There were a few stenos and Isonychias mixed in but the fish really favored the olives. The tricos have been around for a while but they are falling later in the day due to the cold water and nights. We’ve seen them as late as 2 pm and have not seenlarge clouds of them or a lot of fish eating them. Accuweather is calling for warmer air temperatures today with a few clouds rolling in and out. It looks like we have settled into the 600ish release- hopefully we’ll keep that all week. The water temps on the West Branch and Mainstem are in unbelievable shape for the end of August. The West Branch under the 191 Bridge is 54 degrees and Lordville is starting off at 60 degrees this morning. Cannonsville Reservoir is at 83.3% capacity.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 23, 2014
Well it looks like NY didn’t forget how to do the old “Yo Yo” releases after all. The release from Cannonsville will drop to 600 cfs this morning so after all of the increases and decreases over the last few days we are back where we’ve been for most of the Summer. The recording did mention a stepped down drop but that is not showing on the graph at Stilesville- it looks like it was just cut to 600. The fishing was decent last night with large numbers of olives coming off on the lower West Branch and Upper Mainstem from around 5 PM into dark. There are still some sulphurs on the Upper West and we had more success with Isonychias last night than we’ve had in a while. The cloud cover and slight color in the river made streamers productive in the morning before the hatching. The lower West Branch is 54 degrees under the 191 Bridge this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 22, 2014
We had quite a storm last night with wind, heavy rain, plus some hail thrown in for good measure. It caused a slight bump in flows over most of the system but has settled back down to normal. The West Branch is rising this morning with a Cannonsville release of 862 cfs “until further notice”- Stilesville is currently 910 cfs and Hale Eddy is 918 cfs. The West Branch has a tint of color this morning but looks decent and fishable out front right now. Most of the rain either soaked into the ground or ran off quickly. Accuweater is calling for cooler air temps and moderate winds today. The sulphurs in Deposit are waning but still producing a decent number of bugs. The hatches seem to come in flushes that last 30 minutes to an hour at a time with some lulls in between. We are seeing decent olives throughout the West Branch- plus this summer’s staple bug- the summer steno. Very tiny flying ants are also on the water bringing some fish to the surface in the slower sections of the river.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 21, 2014
There is still an unfortunate amount of the green goo plaguing the waters in Deposit, but the fish can still be caught! Despite the several abrupt changes with the release from Cannonsville, there were still plenty of bugs and rising fish. As for the bugs, the cloudy weather and the rain brought a great deal of #18-24 olives. There were also some stenos and little sulphurs in the mix. Today looks like it should be a repeat of yesterday with some cloud cover and an evening thunderstorm. Hale Eddy is currently at 791 and the graph shows it is stable.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 20, 2014
It was tough fishing on the lower West Branch last night with only a few mayflies coming off and most of the fish keying in on a large number of #26 flying ants. We had just enough summer stenos on the water to get some of the fish interested in eating one but a number of fish keyed on the tiny ants and wouldn’t look at a different fly. The wind was a bit more than Accuweather predicted but it settled down nicely for prime time. The sulphur hatch is waning on the Upper West Branch but there were still some coming off plus a few small blue winged olives. Today looks warmer with a few passing showers. Hopefully the rain kicks off some decent olive hatches. Last night was warmer than we’ve been used to but the West Branch under the 191 Bridge is still starting out at a respectable 55 degrees this morning. The release from Cannonsville has dropped slightly and is now 602 cfs until further notice.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 19, 2014
The wind was definitely calmer yesterday which helped the fishing. In the morning nymphing definitely paid off on the lower West Branch. The sulphurs and small olives came later in the evening offering some dry fly action. Spinners are falling early due to the cold weather so if you get a refusal on a dun pattern check the water carefully. The mid-day sulphurs on the Upper West Branch seem to be waning a bit but there is still a fishable hatch. the fish seem to have been keying on the small pseudos over the last few days. Today looks warmer with light winds. The West Branch under the 191 Bridge is 53 degrees this morning.
