Delaware River Report / Conditions September 4, 2019

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 550 cfs.  The recording still says 450 but Stilesville is a steady 562 cfs this morning.  The flow at Hale Eddy will rise slightly during the morning.  Still a good level for both wading and floating. We have clouds this morning and may see a few storms push through around lunch time.  The projected rain amount is only .08″ but keep en eye on the radar in case we get a couple of severe storms are in the area.  Wind will be 10 – 15 from the South.  Olives, isonychias, and cahills.  We’re still only finding a few flying ants but caddis are around.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 3, 2019

We had quite a bit of rain come down yesterday morning but most of it seemed to get soaked in to the ground. The rain stopped around lunch time and while the clouds came in and out during the afternoon the rest of the storms slid around us.  The rivers are up a little this morning but look fine and are fishable and and at a decent level for floating and wading.  The West Branch flow is dropping back slowly as the runoff subsides.  Today should be partly cloudy, 77 degrees wit wind 5 mph from the South.  Olives, isonychias, caddis, and maybe a few cahills should cover you today.  We have seen a few flying ants around but have not seen a large fall on the river yet.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 2, 2019

The release from Cannonsville has been cut back to 450 cfs according to the recording.  The Stilesville gauge show 396 cfs..  It looks like they are counting on the rain to make up the flow difference.  We’ve had some light steady rain so far this morning but nothing significant.  The forecasted amount of rain today has been reduced to 1/2″ .  This could turn out to be a good day on the water rather than a washout.  High of 73 degrees with wind 5 -10 from the South.  Yesterday fished well after the evening rain with really good olives, some isonychias, and even a few cahills showing.  There were a lot of fish rising- a lot of small fish but if you were patient or lucky there were some good fish eating on top too.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 1, 2019

September 1st and it’s 49 degrees this morning.  Sections of the river fished well last night with olives and isonychias.  It took a while to get going but we did find some nicer fish rising plus all of the small ones we’ve been seeing.  Today looks good if Wunderground is correct.  We’ll see partly a partly cloudy sky give way to clouds in the afternoon.  The high will hit 73 degrees with wind 5 -1 0 from the south.  There is a 20% chance of rian but only .13″ if it even happens.  Blind casting isos would be a good move until the olives hatch. The weeds in the water from the release bump the other day made nymphing tough in spots but it filtered out enough to make it possible.  The release from Cannonsville has been cut back a bit to 500 cfs.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 31, 2019

Yesterday afternoon the release from Cannonsville was bumped up to around 950 cfs.  It has been dropped back to around 679 cfs this morning so the West is back in good shape for both wading and floating.  The sudden increase did dislodge weeds and dirt making it tough/ almost impossible to fish the upper river yesterday evening.  That should flush out today with the lower release.  The river looks fine out front this morning.  We’re going to be cooler today with the high reaching 73 degrees.  Sunshine with a few clouds.  Wind will be 5 – 8 mph from the North.

AFTERNOON UPDATE August 30, 2019

The release from Cannonsville has been increased.  The flow at Stilesville seems to have leveled out around 960 cfs.  Of course that has pushed a lot of weeds and dirt into the river.  We’ll check it tomorrow morning to see if that has filtered out

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 30, 2019

It’s cool outside this morning the the air temp will rise to the high 70’s this afternoon.  Partly cloudy skies with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  Sounds pretty much like yesterday.  We may see some rain Sunday but it’s iffy at this point.  Small olives are still the mainstay but we are seeing some cahills and isonychias.  Caddis are out there and we should see more them as we move into Fall.  Nymphing is still your best bet during the day but there have been fish rising here and there so keep an eye out.  Sunny days have fished best for dries after the sun drops behind the hills.

Yesterday the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls peaked over 70 degrees and the East Branch at Fishs Eddy peaked at 69 degrees.  Give those areas a break and concentrate on the cold water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 29, 2019

We had good cloud cover for most of yesterday with some brief light rain around dinner time.  The rainfall total was pretty much nothing so the river levels are pretty much the same as yesterday morning.  Most of the storms slid to the north of us.  There were some olives during the day with fish sporadically on them.  Things picked up in the evening with a few caddis, more olives, and some isonychias depending on what river section you were on.  The sun is going to break through by mid morning but the air temp should stay in the low 70’s.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 28, 2019

The forecast has changed and Wunderground is predicting only.16″ of rain today.  We’ll have a warmer air temp peaking in the high 70’s, good cloud cover, and wind 5 – 10 from the South. The rain should hold off until after lunch.  Sounds like a good day to be out there.  The olives were out again yesterday evening.  Small olives, isonychias, caddis, and a few small sulphurs should round out your selection today.  But it will probably be olives fro the most part.  Mid day nymphing was definitely the best bet.  We still have weeds floating down some pools.  The weeds generally filter out in the long slow pools.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 27, 2019

We had some sun yesterday with clouds moving in towards the evening.  It took the olives a while to get going where we were but there were good numbers of them at dark.  A few isonychias and caddis were mixed in too.  There are still a lot of small fish in the system so be patient and watch the rises to pick out larger fish.  We should see more clouds in the evening today with the air temp staying in the low 70’s.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.  There are a lot of weeds in the long slow pools but they filter out.  If you want to nymph or swing wets you can usually move down below the tailouts and make it happen.  We have rain in the forecast tomorrow but the amount predicted has been reduced to a little over 1/4″.

Despite the cool nights water temps peaked over 70 degrees at Fishs Eddy on the East Branch and over 70 degrees on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls.   Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 26, 2019

We’re in the 40’s this morning and it feels a bit like Fall.  We’ll have sunshine an hit the low 70’s so it will be a lot like yesterday.  If you see tricos this morning be patient.  They can fall later towards noon sometimes on these cold mornings.  We’re still finding some small sulphurs but we’ve been fishing more olives over the last few days.  Iosnychias, cahills, and some caddis are showing up too.  Nymphing is a good bet mid morning on the lower West Branch.

We’re coming off another cool night and river temps are starting off a few degrees lower than what we’ve seen for a while.  Any bright sun days have the potential to drive those temps back up in the low water so right now we’re still giving the warm water areas a break even if they drop to acceptable temps.  Despite the cool nights water temps peaked at 70 degrees at Fishs Eddy on the East Branch and over 70 degrees on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls.   Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 25, 2019

We’re at 57 degrees this morning with good cloud cover and a light sprinkle of rain.  The sun will break through in the afternoon with the air temp only reaching the low 70’s.  Wind will be from the East at 5 – 10 mph.  Not a bad sounding day to be on the water.  Reports varied yesterday but overall the people nymphing seemed to do well.  Olives are out with a few sulphurs and isonychias mixed in.  Caddis and cahills are showing in some river sections too.  Tricos have been around but they’re hit and miss pool to pool.  The release from Cannonsville has been dropped slightly but is still at a decent level for floating and wading.
