Delaware River Report / Conditions May 27, 2019

It sounds like most people had a great day yesterday.  Another day with lots of caddis, small hendricksons, and march brown / gray fox.  We had a very beif storm come through in the afternoon and the fishing really seemed to pick up after that.  We didn’t get too much rain and all of the rivers in the system are falling.  There are now really good wade opportunities on all the rivers and floating is still fine on most of them.  We may see a little more sunshine today with the air temp reaching the low 70’s.  Wind 8 -10 mph from the North.  It looks like a great day to be on the water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 26, 2019

We heard great bug reports from most river sections.  Lots of caddis, a few hendricksons still, plus the gray fox / march browns.  There are a quite a few different caddis species out there so bring your whole box.  The size #16 hendricksons have picked up and we have seen fish actually eat the gray foxes.  The wind was an issue for some but overall the rivers seemed to fish well for most people.  We has some storms move in after dark but the rivers seem to be in fine shape this morning.  The flows bumped slightly but everything looks clear and normal this morning.  There are wade opportunities on all of the rivers this morning.  Floating is still fine on the lower EB, WB and Mainstem.  The Cannonsville release has been cut back to 571 cfs.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 25, 2019

While the wind was blowing at times overall yesterday fished well.  Caddis, hendricksons, and a few gray fox / march browns were on the water.  When the wind was up nymphing worked well.  There was a lull in the afternoon and then the caddis and just a few hendrickson spinners showed up as the sun dropped behind the hills.  The releases from both Cannonsville and Pepacton have been dropped so there are more wade opportunities this morning than we’ve seen all Spring.  Thee is still enough water to float too.  Cannonsville is spilling a minimal amount and Pepacton has stopped coming over the top.  Today looks good with the air temp hitting close to 70 degrees and some showers mostly after dark.  The total precip should be around 1/4″.  Wind will be 10 – 15 from the South.  Hopefully we get some breaks in the wind like yesterday.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 24, 2019

We had some good thunderstorms yesterday but the rivers held together and fished well.  There were hendricksons, caddis, and just a few gray fox hatching – plus some spinners. It wasn’t blanket hatching but it was enough to make the fish happy.  There was a lull in the afternoon when the bright sun popped out but things picked up again as the sun dropped behind the hills.  Today looks good with a cloudy sky and an air temp of 64 degrees.  We’ll have winds 10 – 20 mph from the north- that will be the only challenging part.   The trees are leafed out so hopefully we’ll find some wind breaks out there.  Pepacton has stopped spilling so there there are more areas to wade on the Upper East Branch.  The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are still fine.  The West Branch is still too high to really move around out there.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 23, 2019

Yesterday looked like it should have fished well and it did.  Caddis were out in good numbers early followed by some hendricksons.  Spinners showed up on time and the fish were happy.  It was one of the better dry fly days we’ve seen this week (one of the calmest wind days too).  We did get hit with a good thunderstorm overnight but the rain hasn’t seemed to affect the West Branch.  We’ve dropped a little and it’s pretty clear.  We still have a lot of water in the system so the best wading is still on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc.

We have a few thunderstorms in the forecast this afternoon but none are predicted to drop a lot of precipitation on us.  If we’re real lucky we just see good cloud cover.  Wind should be around 10 mph with the air temp hitting the low 70’s.  It looks like a good day to be on the water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 22, 2019

Yesterday a great potential but the wind was absolutely terrible.  There were bugs on the water but the wind made nymphing the best choice for most of the day.  It did settle down late and a few fish were landed on dries.  There were some hendricksons on the water but the caddis mostly stayed in the bushes.  Today looks like a much better day to be on the water.  We should see sunshine, an air temp of 71 degrees, and winds under 10 mph.  There have been a lot of hendrickson spinners around lately and this looks like a great day for a fall.  The best wading is still on the Beaverkill / Willowemoc.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 21, 2019

The rivers are dropping slowly and the West Branch is clear enough to fish today.  The wall of mud came through around 7 am but seemed to begin to clear up by late afternoon.  We still have color in the West but it looks much better than it did at lunch time yesterday.  The Eastern drainage is clear.  That must have been quite a thunderstorm that hit above Cannonsville and upstream on Oquaga Creek.  The best wading is still on the Beaverkill / Willowemoc.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls flow has dropped back under 1,000 cfs again this morning.  We’re back to cooler air temps but we’ll have to deal with the wind today as the front finishes pushing through.  That should be finished tomorrow and the wind will drop and we may see some sunshine.  There were a lot of hendrickson spinner flying in the yard last night so definitely have that box ready today.  Nymphing will be a good option in the wind.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 20, 2019

Morning update. 9 am.  The stream runoff has caught up with us on the lower West Branch and we are off color.  It is still safe to float.  Hold off fishing the West today.  It should be clear enough to fish tomorrow

The bright sun made fishing tougher than we’ve been used to but bugs hatched and fish were landed.  We still have the mix of hendricksons and caddis on some river sections while other sections are caddis and the first few march browns.  Hopefully the march brown and gray fox hatches push soon.  It looks like the western drainage got more rain than the Eastern side last night.  The Beaverkill / Willowemoc still offer the best bet for wading.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls flow bumped to 1,000 cfs but it looks like it is peaking.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy is over 4,000 cfs so definitely no wading over here.  It is fine to float and is fishable this morning.It looks like the rain is done for the most part and we’re in for a warm day.  We should cool down tonight and have normal temperatures for a while.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 19, 2019

Yesterday people caught fish on hendricksons, hendrickson spinners, and caddis.  The dry fly fishing was good on some sections with a mix of bugs.  Nymphing produced fish befroe thehhatches started.  It was sunny with light wind making it one of the better spinner days of the year so far.  Today is going to feel more like Summer with the air temp hitting 80 degrees and thunderstorms moving in towards the evening.  Wind should be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls flow has dropped to 800 cfs offering more wade opportunities.  The Upper Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in great shape for wading.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 18, 2019

Yesterday was a mix of dry fly fishing and nymph fishing.  People who swiched up methods did well overall and there were some really nice fish landed.  There are still hendricksons and blue quills on some river sections while we wait for the march brown hatch to intensify on other sections.  Different caddis species are hatching on different river sections but we are seeing them just about everywhere.  The warm weather continues and we should see the air temp hit 70 degrees today.  We should have sunshine with a few clouds with wind 5 – 10 out of the North.  The river flows are dropping slowly.  The reservoirs are still spilling so the West Branch and East Branch will drop the slowest.  The Beaverkill flow has dropped below 1,000 cfs so there are some wade opportunities there now.  There is no real amount of precipitation forecasted in the near future.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 17, 2019

Yesterday was a good day to be on the river.  Sunny and warm.  The caddis were out and there were some hendricksons and blue quills hatching in the afternoon.  The bright sun kept some of the risers sporadic but it picked up as the sun dropped behind the hills.  We are seeing some hendrickson spinners hitting the water in the evening.  The apple caddis showed up in good numbers on some river sections offering some opportunities earlier in the day.  Nymphing and swinging wets has also payed off.  The wind played havoc with the hatches at times but overall the fish were happy.  Today looks even better with a few more clouds, a light shower, and winds 5 – 10 from the West.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 16, 2019

We’re still seeing hendricksons, blue quills, and a handful of march browns.  There are a few species of caddis out there too so definitely have your caddis box handy.   The sun actually came out yesterday and fish were landed on dry flies and nymphs.  We did get some afternoon rain that came through quick but not enough fell to really affect the flows.  Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are both spilling again.  Wading is tough on the main rivers but people are finding a few spots to get out far enough to catch some fish.  Just use your judgement and be careful.  The Beaverkill is dropping so you should definitely be able to find wadeable water in the upper stretches of that system.  Today looks beautiful with air temps hitting the mid 60’s, afternoon sunshine, and winds under 10 mph.
