Delaware River Report / Conditions August 8, 2015
Today looks like a classic summer day with sun and air temps approaching the low 80’s. Despite the weather the entire West Branch and upper East Branch are in great shape. We are starting off at 46 degrees this morning under the 191 Bridge in Hancock. Lordville peaked around 68 degrees yesterday afternoon so if you do fish the upper Mainstem double check the temperature with a thermometer. Pseudos were hatching well yesterday late afternoon along with a mix of sulphurs, isonychias, and cahills. There have been some small clouds of tricos in the mornings and early afternonns but it hasn’t been a fishable hatch yet.
Hatching:
Slate Drake #12-2xl – 12 – Isonychia bicolor
Sulphur #18-20 – E. dorothea
Light Cahills #14 – various steno species (invaria, etc)
Golden Drake #12-2xl – Potomanthus distinctus
PED / Pink Lady #14 – E. vitreus
Large Blue Winged Olive #14 – D. cornuta
Tiny Blue Wing Olives #22-26 – Pseudo sp. (now classified as Acentrella sp.)
Charcoal Caddis #14 -16 – dark Brachycentrus sp.
Tan Caddis #16-18 – Hydrosyche sp.
Blue Winged Olives #16 – 18 – Baetis vagans

The cool nights and cloud cover are doing their job and the Mainstem at Lordville peaked at 65 degrees yesterday. Not too bad for the first week of August. It looks like we have settled into the 500 cfs release from Cannonsville which is decent for wading and floating. There is a little water coming in from the feeders and Hale Eddy is flowing at 585 cfs. A little rain over the next couple of days would help the system. There may be some thunderstorms next week but it’s a little too far out to tell for sure.
Isonychias, sulphurs, cahills, and olives are still on the menu. The olives vary in size from size #14 Cornutas all the way down to #26 pseudos so carry a good assortment out there.

The West Branch is now at a great level for wading and it is still possible to float with a flow of 543 cfs at Hale Eddy. Keep an eye on the daytime temperatures on the Mainstem. The combination of the lower West Branch release and the warm days caused the Mainstem at Lordville to peak at 65 degrees yesterday afternoon. Luckily we have some cool nights in the forecast that should help the system out. The West Branch temps are still in great shape with 52 degrees under the 191 Bridge in Hancock this morning. Look for the colder water for the best hatching over the next few days. We are still seeing the same mayflies on the water. Sulphurs, olives, cahills, and isonychias. We did see a nice flush of golden drakes yesterday but didn’t see a fish take them. The fish seemed to prefer the smaller cahills in #14. We’ve also seen small trico clouds on the river so definitely carry some spinners if you are out from early morning to early afternoon.

Yesterday had more clouds than Accuweather predicted and it definitely made the fish more comfortable rising. We had decent mixes of sulphurs, isonychias, and olives, plus a few more golden drakes. The cahills were the winner for us yesterday with the spinners coming towards dark. The recording for Cannonsville Dam is stating a release of 633 cfs this morning. Stilesville is showing 598 cfs but for some reason that kind of difference shows up once in a while up there. Accuweather is calling for air temps in the 70’s today with mostly sunny skies. Winds should gust around 8 – 10 mph.

We woke up top a little light rain this morning with decent cloud cover. The sun should break through shortly but the high air temps should stay in the 70’s today. Depending on which weather channel you watch we are either going to have sun all day or we may get a stray thunder storm in the afternoon. The release from Cannonsville is 845 cfs this morning. We should drop more by tomorrow opening up even more water on the West Branch to wading. The release is still sending enough cold water down the system to keep the Upper Mainstem cool. The Main at Lordville peaked at 62 degrees yesterday which is awesome for early August. Sulphurs, olives, isonychias, and cahills are the main food source. We have seen a few of the Heptagenia hebes (olive sulphurs) in sections plus a couple of cornutas here and there.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2015
We’ve received some great news about the situation at Cannonsville Reservoir and we are now returning to normal operations. The cold water bank should get us through the summer (as long as they release it). Portions of the press release from the NYCDEP:
- The turbid discharge downstream of the dam has been completely and successfully ended.
- After consulting with engineers from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, DEP has decided to return Cannonsville Reservoir to normal operations.
DEP has consulted with fisheries biologists at the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to develop the following schedule for reducing the release over the next four days:
Aug. 2 – 1,125 cfs
Aug. 3 – 844 cfs
Aug. 4 – 633 cfs
Aug. 5 – 500 cfs
Reducing the rate of release will also significantly extend the life of the cold water inside Cannonsville Reservoir, which is important for the fisheries downstream and inside the reservoir itself. There was approximately 25 billion gallons of cold water in the reservoir as of Sunday morning.
So we should be at a constant 500 cfs release by the end of the week. The West Branch should be fine for both wading and floating. Same hatches: sulphurs, cahills, olives, and isonychias. We are on the cooling trend right now with nights down in the 50’s and days switching from 80’s to 70’s. That should help keep the system in great shape.

The forecasted thunderstorms never materialized yesterday leaving us with more sun than we anticipated. The hatches came off but the fish seemed hesitant to rise steadily. While people did find steady fish, many saw one and two timers during the afternoon. It varied by location so there was no right answer, just luck. Blind casting isonychias in the riffles worked well for people who didn’t ant to wait for steady fish. Accuweather is calling for air temps in the low 80s today with sun. Unless it changes we do have a 75% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow.
Sulphurs, olives, isonychias, and cahills.

The 1500 cfs release from Cannonsville and cool nights continue to do wonders for the West Branch and the Upper Mainstem. The water temperature at Lordville peaked at 60 degrees yesterday. It would be nice to see DEP give a little more water to the East Branch under the circumstances. The bright sun made the fish a little shy early on and unfortunately the clouds moved in a little later than we wanted but there were bugs hatching and fishing rising anyway. Sulphurs, isonychias, olives, and cahills. The olives have ranged from #14 cornutas down to #26 pseudos so carry a decent range of sizes. The golden drakes seem to be coming to an end but you may still see a few on the water in the late afternoon.

Yesterday’s rain didn’t seem to amount to much besides some fog on the river. Luckily the clouds stuck around most of the day once the breeze blew the fog away. The fish were happier without the bright sun and were eating well once the hatches started. Lower river sections saw lots of olives on the water mixed with cahills and sulphurs. The upper sections saw the normal hatches of sulphurs and few isonychias. We did see some fish eat golden drakes but it seems that hatch is waning.
Accuweather is calling for sunshine with air temps in the low 80s. The water temperatures are holding up well on the Upper Mainstem with the cold release from Cannonsville. The lower East Branch is starting off at 67 degrees at Fishs Eddy this morning so that will peak over 70 again today.

The high cold release from Cannonsville continues to keep the West Branch and Upper Mainstem in great shape. Lordville peaked at 61 degrees yesterday afternoon. We also continue to see sulphurs, isonychias, cahills, and lots of olives from #18 – 26. There are a some golden drakes still around- especially on the Mainstem. There have bee some trico sightings so if you’re on the water early carry a few spinner patterns in your box. Today looks like a good fishing day as we break out of the run of really hot weather and bright sun. Accuweather is calling for air temperatures in the low 80’s with a few scattered thunderstorms. Total precipitations should be just under a 1/4″. The low release from Pepacton has heated up the lower East Branch. Fishs Eddy is starting off at 70 degrees this morning and peaked around 75 yesterday afternoon. Stick to the Upper East, the entire West Branch, and the Upper Mainstem down to Lordville. If you venture below Lordville double check the water temperature with your thermometer.

Today looks like a bright hot one. Accuweather is calling for sun and a high air temperature of 90 degrees. The 1500 release from Cannonsville will protect the West Branch and upper Mainstem. Both have been fishing well regardless of the weather. The fish will be a little shy with the bright sun so look for shaded banks or hopefully a stray cloud or two will come through in the afternoon. The hatches remain the same with sulphurs, olives, isonychias, and cahills. The amount of each mayfly changes depending on the river section you’re fishing but carry them all. The lower East Branch is too warm to fish with water temperatures starting off at 68 degrees this morning.
Tomorrow’s weather looks a little better for fishing with some stray thunderstorms in the morning and again in the afternoon. Air temps should drop back to the low 80’s.

The cold water continues on the West Branch keeping the Upper Mainstem in decent shape. The upper sections of the branches are seeing the normal sulphur and small olive hatches while cahills, isonychias, and olive are dominating the lower sections. We are still seeing a few golden drakes being taken in sections so definitely carry a few in your box on the lower WB and Main. The release from Pepacton has been cut back again. The current flow at Downsville is 191 cfs. The low release, sun, and warm air temperatures has caused the lower East Branch to warm up. Fishs Eddy peaked at 70 degrees yesterday. Stick to the upper EB, the upper Main, and the entire West Branch over the next few days as we go through this heat wave.
