Delaware River Report / Conditions July 3, 2015

Cannonsville, Pepacton, and the Neversink Reservoirs are still spilling this morning.  The Rivers are still off color but the West Branch looks to be in the best shape this morning.  Streamers worked well yesterday with white patterns working the best.  There are some mayflies around but dryfly fishing won’t improve until the flows drop a bit.  Today looks like a great day with little wind, some sun, and air temperatures in the mid 70’s.  Floating is the best and safest option right now.  The release from Cannonsville was ramped up throughout most of yesterday and sits at 1,103 cfs.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 2, 2015

Cannonsville, Pepacton, and the Neversink Reservoirs are now all spilling.  Good thing they starved the rivers in May and saved all that water for the drougt.
The rivers are off color this morning but the West Branch has cleared enough to fish.  It looks like a streamer day but there is always a shot of finding risers in the eddies and tailouts of longer pools.  The flows are up so wading is not a great option but fishing from a boat is safe at this level.  You’ll notice the water temperature is higher at Stilesville this morning due to the warmer water spilling over the top of the dam.  The gauge at Stilesville 5:45 am update still shows the upper West Branch on the rise so keep an eye on that throughout the day.  There is no additional rain in the forecast for the next few days.  The release from Cannonsville Reservoir is 701 cfs and the current spill is 925 cfs.

Double check the USGS graphs on the links below.  The West Branch is beginning to drop but we are still dirty.  The flow at Stilesville has risen slightly over the last couple of hours.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 1, 2015

Well it seems we received a little more rain yesterday and last night than was originally forecasted.  The rivers are high and off color this morning but there are no debris coming down the West Branch.  This could end up being a very good streamer day.  As the water drops keep an eye out for rising fish.  We’ve found a number of fish eating on top this season when the river is off color, especially when it’s dropping and beginning to clear.  The West Branch around Stilesville should be fine for wading and should be clearer as you move above the feeders in Deposit.  Below that you should stick to floating until the rivers come down.   Accuweather is calling for an additional 1/4″ of rain throughout the day.  Keep an eye on the gauges to keep up with the latest flows.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 30, 2015

The rivers have dropped back and look good overall.  We have cleared nicely on most of the system and water temperatures look great this morning.  Accuweather is calling for overcast skies and a 1/4″ of rain spread throughout the day – sounds like a great olive day!  Sulphurs, olives, and cahills are still hatching in decent numbers with the isonychias mixed in for good measure.  As we clear, the nymphing action should pick up offering more opportunities during the day.  Streamers have been working well in the off color water.  As we clear up smaller streamers should still interest some fish.  We should get some additional rain overnight which is great news for fishing over the next few days.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 29, 2015

The rivers are dropping back and clearing this morning.  Despite the rising water yesterday some people were able to find fish on top eating cahills, olives, and a few sulphurs.  Others found success throwing streamers in the off color water.  The West Branch should clear well by this afternoon increasing the dry fly activity.  Accuweather is calling for overcast skies with the potential of light showers today.  Air temps should stay in the high 60’s to low 70’s today.  Between the flows and overcast skies water temps should be decent today on most of the system.

Mid-Morning Update / Conditions June 28, 2015

Keep an eye on the river gauges today by clicking on the links below.  We are still getting some rain this morning and the runoff from the tributaries is causing some of the rivers in the system to rise.  We haven’t seen any off color water on the West Branch but have heard of some coming down the Beaverkill system.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 28, 2015

While it did seem to rain most of yesterday afternoon and overnight the flows look decent this morning.  The West Branch is clear with barely a budge so far.  The East Branch and Beaverkill are climbing but the lower East and Mainstem were clear at 6:30 this morning.  We’ll have to wait and see what the feeders add to the system as the day goes on.  Water temps look great this morning all the way down to Lordville with the system in the 50’s. We’re still fishing small olives, isonychias, and sulphurs.   Hopefully the hatching is early today with the lower water temps, overcast skies, and light intermittent rain.
Accuweather is calling for air temps in the high 60’s today with just under a 1/4″ of rain from a number of light passing showers.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 27, 2015

We have overcast skies this morning with the Accuweather forecast calling for close to an inch of rain during the day.  While Accuweather is always accurate, looking at the state radar we should get something.  We are in wait and see mode for the river later this afternoon.  Some light rain should start around 10:30 am so we may have decent fishing earlier in the day than we’ve had lately.  We’ll watch the storm closely and update the blog if river conditions change during the day.
Olives, suphurs, and isonychias are still the best hatches right now eith more sulphurs than anything.  Keep a few cahills in your box just in case.  If the river comes up from the rain streamers could be  a great option mid-day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 26, 2015

The predicted storms missed us yesterday but there were rising fish.  The fish were tough but #18 sulphur emergers seemed to be the answer.  The river system is in great shape again this morning.  Nymphing shoud be good during the day with most of the hatching coming late afternoon into dark.  We should have a mix of sun and clouds with a scattered shower late.  Most of the rain is forecasted to hits us tomorrow afternoon.  That could start the hatching earlier and the increased flows should keep the rivers up through next week.  The release from Cannonsville continues to be 500 cfs

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 25, 2015

The weather looks good for fishing today with clouds moving in before lunch and some light rain in the evening.  The rivers are in good shape with decent flows, clarity, and temperatures this morning.  Hopefully the clouds and rain push the hatching up today and we see mayflies by mid afternoon.  Sulphurs, olives, and isonychias are still the main insects with some black caddis and cahills coming off sporadically.  Nymphing and swinging wets flies worked well early in the day before the hatches started.
We have additional rain coming overnight which should keep the rivers in good shape through the weekend.  Cannonsville and Pepacton are still filling with Pepacton leading the race at 99.2% capacity this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 24, 2015

It seemed that most of the additional rain in the forecast missed us here on the West Branch drainage.  We had scattered hatches during the day with the main mix of sulphurs and olives coming in the evening.  A little bit of streamer and nymph fishing mid day helped pass the times the sun popped out.  The West Branch looks good this morning and has dropped back to 700 cfs which is a great flow for  floating and wading.
Today should be pleasant with air temps in the high 70’s and sunshine.  We do have some rain in the forecast beginning tomorrow and lasting through the weekend.  If Accuweather is right a little cloud cover and light precip. could set us up for a decent fishing weekend.
