Delaware River Report / Conditions September 10, 2017

The clouds stuck around longer than expected yesterday and the air temp stayed cool.  We had decent report of olives and isonychia hatches by mid afternoon.  Once again it seems the olives stole the show right down to the spinner falls.  There were even some white flies hatching on some of the lower river sections.  Today is going to be warmer with more sun.  Nymphing may be better early until we get some shaded banks or the sun drops behind the hills.  If we’re lucky this week’s warmer air temperatures will bring out the flying ants again.

Yesterday’s hatching was decent with olives once again being the bug of choice.  The fish were definitely happier eating on top when we had the early morning fog or cloud cover during the day.  We had periods of brief rain that gave way to afternoon sunshine.  Once the sun hit you had to hunt down the risers and be patient.  If Wunderground is correct we should be in better shape today with decent afternoon cloud cover and winds dropping back in the early evening.  Nymphing may be a good daytime bet to start off.  It’s going to be cooler today with air temps in the high 50’s.  Add in the cloud cover and cool nights and the system will have great water temperatures over the next few days.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 8, 2017

Yesterday was tougher with the varied weather throughout the day.  We had sun, rain, and wind and it just kept switching back and forth all afternoon.  There were some olives hatching but you had to hunt to find fish feeding in a rhythm.  Nymphing and swinging wets was the better method for most of the day.  There are some white flies on the Mainstem so swinging white fly wets may be a good option to pick up the active fish.  Today’s weather looks much better with a few rain showers moving in during the afternoon.  Wind should stay below 10 mph.  Rain totals will be negligible so the rivers should stay in fine shape.  We’re hoping for more olives this afternoon once we have the light rain.

The rivers came up a bit yesterday due to the all day light rain.  The West is already dropping back and if fine to wade.  The color looks good this morning and water temperatures are in great shape.  The combination of cloud cover, rain, and cooler air temps have been great for the system.  The cooler temps did put a bit of a damper on the flying ants but there were isonychias, cahill / stenos, and heptagenia hatching in the afternoon.  And of course the olives were there.  It’s going to be warmer today with a few afternoon showers.  The amount of precipitation in the forecast looks negligible and it should clear out before dark.

We’ve had rain off and on since dark last night.  There are puddles in the yard and you can see some of the feeders flowing higher but so far the river gauges haven’t budged and everything looks good here in Hancock.  The forecast is only calling for 1/4″ of rain today.  Winds will be light and the air temperature will be lower with the high reaching 60 degrees.  This looks like a good day to throw streamers and then look for heads later in the afternoon.  Yesterday was a great flying ant day and they finally hit the water where were fishing.  There were all sizes and colors mixed in so there was no particular ant pattern that stood out.  We went bigger just because there were so many we thought our fly would get lost in the mix.

Somewhere someone had to have a great evening on this river.  The flying ants were coming off pretty well in the grass along the Mainstem.  They did not hit the water where we were fishing but the likely did somewhere.  Luck of the draw.  The bright sun and wind made for tough fishing during the day.  We saw fewer olives than the previous few days.  Nymphing was definitely the best mid day strategy.  Today actually looks better on the weather reports.  We should have a few storms moving through with winds peaking only at 10 mph.  The clouds are already here.  Rain total will be between 1/4″ and 1/2″ depending on which station you’re listening to.  We’re counting on olives today.

After a day of nice steady rain the rivers held their own and everything looks good this morning.  The flows bumped up a bit but not too bad.  The water is dropping back and everything look fishable here in Hancock. There were decent olives on some sections yesterday afternoon.  A lot of the fish were eating the emergers just under the surface so timing and patience played a huge role.  We saw a few cahills and isonychias but really it was all about the olives.  Today is going to be much warmer with the air temperatures approaching the high 70’s.  The clouds will give way to sun in the afternoon wind winds around 10 mph.  With the warmer air temperatures and wet ground this has the potential to be a decent flying ant day.

We’ve has sporadic rain since last evening.  The river flows have bumped a small bit this morning but everything looks clear and fine down here.  A lot of the precipitation must have soaked into the ground.  The cloud cover and rain certainly helped the fishing.  There were a lot of olives, cahills, and heptagenia on the water last evening and the fish were up and happy. Some river sections are even seeing decent numbers of isonychias and isonychia spinners.  The good fishing should continue today as we keep the cloud cover and light intermittent rain. Winds will be low staying under 10 mph.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 2, 2017

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped to 401 ish cfs.  The recording hasn’t been updated but we’ll go with that number.  Water temperatures are not a problem after the last few nights and the rivers are okay for floating or wading at these levels.  The wind was unkind for a good part of yesterday but did finally drop in the evening.  Once it dropped the dry fly fishing picked up with olives, cahills, and Heptagenia coming off.  We have been fishing olives from size 18 down to 26 so bring the whole box.  Some fish aren’t picky while others get stuck on the tiny ones.  We should have a few clouds around today with light winds.  There’s a possibility of an afternoon / evening shower but that looks unlikely to happen.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 1, 2017

This is the coldest morning yet.  The water temperatures all dropped back a few degrees and the rivers are in great shape this morning.  We should have a partly sunny sky with a mild temperature in the mid 60’s.  Yesterday afternoon / evening had decent hatching on most of the river.  Besides our steady blue winged olives there were more isonychias, cahills, and hebes on the water.  Nymphing and swinging wets should be a decent method- especially with the hebes around.  The weekend is shaping up well with the same weather pattern sticking around and maybe some rain on Sunday.

For the most part we had to deal with sunshine for most of the afternoon. There were periods of wind but it actually did come in gusts so it was easy to wait out before casting again.  2017 will be known as the Summer of the Olive.  There were the normal other bugs around yesterday but once again the little olives seemed to be what the fish liked flowed by a #14 Cahill emerger.  We should have better weather moving in today with variable clouds and a mid day shower.  We shouldn’t see a lot of precipitation so the flows should be fine.  Yesterday’s sunshine caused some of the river temperatures to rise despite the cold night.

The rain missed us so besides a few drops we had decent cloud cover all day.  The combination of cool nights and daytime cloud cover has really helped the water temperatues too.  The Mainstem at Lordville is starting off at a nice 57 degrees this morning.  Today will be clear but we will keep the cooler temperatures.  Tomorrow is our best shot of any precipitation but if it happns it will be light.  We’re still fishing a lot of small olives mixed with sulphurs, cahill / stenos, golden drakes, yellow drakes, and isonychias.  We’re also seeing a few more caddis flying around in the afternoons.  If you are looking for Tricos don’t get off the river too early.  On colder mornings the spinners take longer before they fall.  We’ve seen them as last as lunchtime.
