Delaware River Report / Conditions August 24, 2019

Yesterday seemed like a strange on on the water.  Conditions looked great, nymphing was tough followed by an early evening olive hatch on the West with happy fish.  Once the sun dropped the bugs and fish seemed to stop too.  We’ll have more sunshine today but the air temp will stay in the low 70’s.  wind will be from the North at 5 – 10 mph.  Sounds like a very pleasant day to be on the water.  We’re seeing more caddis and few flying ants so it feels like early fall is coming.  We have not seen a big ant fall yet.  Some sulphurs are still around but olives seem a bit more consistent on the lower West.  Tricos are spotty but out there.  It seems pool to pool so if you don’t see any action in the morning try a different river section.

We’re coming off another cool night and river temps are starting off a few degrees lower than what we’ve seen for a while.  Any bright sun days have the potential to drive those temps back up in the low water so right now we’re still giving the warm water areas a break eve if they drop to acceptable temps.  Water temps are hot on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville.  Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.
