Delaware River Report / Conditions May 28, 2015

Well we finally received some rainfall.  A couple of the thunderstorms were severe and dumped quite a bit of water very quickly.  The East Branch drainage benefited the most with a large jump in flow overnight.  The water temperatures have not dropped as much as we hoped.  Fishs Eddy is 64 degrees this morning and the Lordville gauge on the Mainstem is showing 68 degrees this morning at the 5:45 am update.  The flow on the Mainstem will increase today as the water from the Beaverkill and East Branch filters through.  Hopefully this will slow the rising water temperatures today.  The forecast is for air temps in the high 70’s, sun, and moderate winds.  The West branch barely bumped form the rain with Hale Eddy at 274 cfs this morning.  Fish with your thermometer and unless the water temps fall during the day as the flow increases I would skip the Mainstem completely.
The Upper West Branch and Upper East Branch are perfectly wadeable after last night.  We are still seeing what is best described as bug soup.  We had brief hatches of stenos and olives yesterday after the rain.  You will find better hatching where you find water temperatures in the 50’s rather than the 60’s so if you’re not seeing activity keep moving around.  Nymphing has been productive during the day.  Use flies that match the size of the naturals out there.  Don’t leave the river too early.  Sun and light winds that drop in the evening can mean decent spinner falls.  We still have green drakes hatching so the coffin flies will come.
