Delaware River Report / Conditions August 7, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 928 cfs.  The rest of the system has dropped slightly as the runoff subsides.  The release from Pepacton is steady around 650 cfs leaving a flow at Downsville of 678 cfs.  Yesterday was hot with bright sun occasionally broken up with a little cloud cover.  The upper West Branch mid day sulphurs continue to hatch with a mix of olives and isonychias.  The lower West seems to be mostly olives with an occasional sulphur and isonychia passing by.  The increased release should cool down the lower West maybe pushing the bugs to hatch earlier in the day.  Today looks like a good fishing day with the air temp only hitting the mid 80’s, wind around 6 mph, and some light rain in the afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 6, 2018

The rivers are dropping slowly after the weekend’s rain.  Stilesville is holding steady at 589 cfs and Hale Eddy has dropped to 1,010 cfs opening more water for wading on the lower West Branch.  There was still some color in the West last night but it was clear enough for the fish to rise.  The best dry fly fishing is still happening in Deposit with mid day sulphurs, isonychias, and olives.  We found some fish on the lower West last night but most of the action was at dark on olives.  Today is the last day of heat and bright sun.  It looks like a mirror image of yesterday with high 80’s and just a few clouds.  Tomorrow we should see high 70’s to low 80’s with a light storm and just under 1/4″ of rain.

The rivers are dropping and clearing this morning.  The release on the East Branch has been increased and the flow at Downsville is 678 cfs.  This will cool the river down and help clear any runoff from the feeder streams.  The West Branch at Stilesville is a steady 589 cfs.  The flow at Hale Eddy is 1,320 cfs and is clear enough to fish below that.  Streamers will still be a good option early.  The sulphurs are still hatching mid afternoon on the upper West Branch with a few isonychias and olives mixed in.  We’re in another warming trend with air tems in the high 80’s and sunshine for the next few days.  There is some light rain in the forecast beginning Tuesday.  Right now it looks like enough to give a break from the sun but not enough to mess with the river flows.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 4, 2018

We have a few storms roll through yesterday that dropped quite a bit of water in a short amount of time.  The West Branch came through alright and is beginning to drop this morning.  Stilesville is a steady 597 cfs while Hale Eddy is 2,230 cfs and falling.  Fishing above Oquaga Creek will be your best bet for clear water and dry fly fishing.  Sulphurs, olives, and isonychias.  Below Deposit streamer fishing should be decent as the river drops and clears throughout the day.  The East Branch is Downsville is a low 166 cfs but there is quite a bit of water coming down the feeder creeks to make the flow 1,460 cfs at Harvard.  There is no rain in the forecast for the next few days so the rivers should drop and clear.

UPDATE Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2018

We had a brief but heavy thunderstorm move through around 11 am.  Hale Eddy is 1,460 cfs and climbing.  The lower West Branch is showing some color.  The flow at Stilesville seems reasonably steady with a slight bump at 597 cfs.  Most of the runoff is coming from Oquaga Creek and below.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been increased slightly to 549 cfs. We had some light rain overnight- just enough to wet the ground down here but also add a little runoff at the Hale Eddy Gauge.  The flows on the rest of the system are dropping a bit this morning.  Right now everything looks fine.  We do have some thunderstorms in the forecast that look like they will hit us.  If Oquaga Creek turns muddy and high chekc above there in Stilesville for clearer water.  We’ll do a mid day update if conditions change.

Small sulphurs, olives, and isonychias will cover most of your dry fly fishing.  If the flows come up with some color try throwing some dark streamers.

Despite the higher flows there are still temperature issues on the lower East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem.   Stick to the West Branch or the upper East Branch for trout.

We had a few showers during the day and again overnight.  The West Branch flow increased slightly to 726 cfs.  Stilesville is still flat at 582 cfs.  The East Branch at Harvard flow increased slightly to 284 cfs.  The rivers you would fish trout on today came through the rain just fine.  Sulphurs, olives, and isonychias are still the go to mayflies.  There is some fog on the river this morning but the sun is already burning through.  There is some decent cloud cover already that should stick around all day.  We should see some light showers today and then some isolated storms overnight.  Winds 5 -10 mph with and air temp around 77 degrees.

Despite the higher flows there are still temperature issues on the lower East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem.   Stick to the West Branch or the upper East Branch for trout.

We woke up to some light rain this morning.  Wunderground is predicting the total rainfall of 1/2″ to fall over the course of the day.  Some of the afternoon rain will be in scattered thunderstorms so we’ll have to wait and see if they hit us or hit 10 miles away.  So far everything looks good and it’s feels like a good fishing day.  Winds from the south 5  10 mph.  Yesterday was a mix of clouds and sun.  The sulphurs hatched on the upper West with a mix of olives and isonychias.  We are seeing a few more caddis in the air so keep an eye out for those now too.   It looks like we’ll have clouds and light rain for the next few days setting us up for a good weekend.

The overnight thunderstorms missed us.  The runoff from last weeks rain is slowing down and the release from Cannonsville is still 530 cfs.  Today should be cloudy, 79 degrees, with wind around 8 mph.  Wundeground doesn’t have any rain accumulation in today’s forecast.  The mid day sulphurs are still hatching on the upper West Branch.  There were olives and some isonychias mixed in but most of the fish we watched eat wanted the sulphurs.  The bugs came in waves throughout the afternoon and were thick at times.  The hatching seemed to slow down in the evening as the air temperature dropped.  We have some rain in the forecast for the rest of the week but that seems to be changing every few hours.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 30, 2018

Today should be a lot like yesterday.  Mostly sun, high around 80, and light wind from the North.  The Release from Cannonsville is still 530 cfs keeping the lower river cooler than we’ve seen lately.  It’s also a good level for floating and wading.  Nymphing should work early while the bugs are active before the hatch.  Mid day sulphurs are still coming off on the upper river.  We expect the hatches on the lower river to come off a little earlier with the cooler water temps.  Sulphurs, cahills, and olives should cover most of your needs.  Definitely have some isonychia patterns just in case.  They are definitely around although come days the hatching has been better than others.

Despite the higher flows there are still temperature issues on the lower East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem.  The cooler nights have helped but we should still give them a break. Stick to the West Branch or the upper East Branch for trout. As the flows drop those rivers will heat up again in the sun over the next few days.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 29, 2018

The release from Cannonsville was increased slightly bringing the flow at Stilesville to 582 cfs.  This will keep the West Branch in great shape as the runoff subsides.  To potential rain never materialized yesterday so we had a good mix of sun and clouds most of the afternoon.  The mid afternoon hatches are still happening on the upper river sections.  The larger release should move the cold water line downstream so we may see more daytime activity on the lower river sections over the next few days.  Nymphing or swinging wets are still good options to put some fish in the net before the hatches start.  Streamer fishing is worth a shot in the higher flows- especially early and late.  Today looks like a carbon copy of yesterday.  Air temps in the high 70’s, partly cloudy, and winds out of the North 5 – 10 mph.

Despite the higher flows there are still temperature issues on the lower East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem.  Stick to the West Branch or the upper East Branch for trout. As the flows drop those rivers will heat up again in the sun over the next few days.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 28, 2018

Yesterday’s forecasted rain missed us.  We heard a little thunder off in the distance but stayed dry.  The release from Cannonsville Reservoir was increased to 500 cfs yesterday afternoon.  The increased released should drop the water temp on the West Branch down into Hancock.  That cooler water may push the bugs on the lower West to hatch earlier in the day.  We have a 30% chance of a light storm this afternoon but count on sunshine.  The West Branch and the upper East Branch are both in good shape for wading this morning.  Sulphurs, cahills, olives, and isonychias will make up the bulk of the mayflies.   With the sun and humidity we’ve had it’s time to put a few flying ants in your box just in case.  The rest of the rivers in the system are dropping back and the flows will continue to fall over the next few days.  Despite the higher flows there are still temperature issues on the lower East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem.  Stick to the West Branch or the upper East Branch for trout. As the flows drop those rivers will heat up again in the sun over the next few days.
