Delaware River Report: July 7, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

The release from Cannonsville was decreased to 500 cfs. There are daytime sulphur hatches on the Upper West. Nymphing is tough up there with the algae. The lower West is better for nymphing and has bugs coming off as the sun drops. If we do get the storms we may see some olives and Isonychias earlier in the day.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. It’s time to give these sections a break and fish the colder water.

Today will be cooler hitting 78 degrees with potential thunderstorms. A lot of these storms tend to slide around us so keep an eye on the radar. Wunderground is calling for 1/2″ of rain. Wind will be light and variable.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

The release from Cannonsville was increased to 750 cfs. This looks like s temperature release since the flow at Montague NJ is just under 5K. The West is still in good shape for floating and wading. There is algae in the water making nymphing tough up towards deposit. The increased release may knock more algae loose and could take a day to flush through. There is much less below Hale Eddy. There are daytime sulphur hatches on the Upper West. The lower West was sparse yesterday until the sun dropped. Hopefully the colder water and potential afternoon thunderstorms push the bugs a little earlier.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. It’s time to give these sections a break and fish the colder water.

Today will be hot again hitting 89 degrees with potential stray thunderstorms. A lot of those tend to miss us so we’ll have to wait and see. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

We had a few showers in the morning but not enough to bump the rivers. The flows dropped quite a bit since yesterday and but the rivers look good this morning. We’re in good shape for floating and wading. There are some mid day sulphurs on the upper West. There is algae in the water making nymphing tough up towards deposit. There is much less below Hale Eddy. We’re still seeing some cahills along with Isonychias and olives.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. It’s time to give these sections a break and fish the colder water.

Today will be a 87 degrees with potential stray showers. Wind will be light and variable.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

We had a little more rain fall last night but the rivers look good this morning. The West Branch is 738 cfs at Hale Eddy so we’re in good shape for floating and wading. We still have a slight tint to the water but visibility is fine out front. Streamers are fishing well. We should see our normal hatching of sulphurs, Isonychias, and olives in the afternoon.

The Beaverkill at Coos Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked around 69 degrees yesterday. Again it;s time to give these sections a break and fish the colder water.

Today will be a 81 degrees with potential thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report: July 3, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

The rain held off until evening. Dry fly fishing was slower than we expected during the day but picked up in the rain. Olives, sulphurs, and Isonychias. Additional rain fell overnight and the river flows are up this morning with the flow at Hale Eddy hitting 900 cfs. It looks like it peaked and should begin to drop soon if the other thunderstorms miss us. There is a slight tint to the water but visibility is fine out front. The slight color could actually help the fishing today.

Today will be a 80 degrees with potential thunderstorms in the morning and clouds in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable.

Delaware River Report: July 2, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

Today looks like a good day to be on the water. We have light rain this morning with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Total rainfall should be .35″. Good cloud cover and no wind. The change in weather could push the hatches earlier in the day. Sulphurs, olives, cahills, and Isonychias have been making upmost of the bugs for a while now. We are seeing the midday sulphurs on the Upper West Branch. There is some algae in the upper river so if you’re nymphing stick lower.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls and Mainstem at Lordville peaked close or over 70 degrees. The East Branch at Fishs Eddy hit 68 degrees. All the rivers are starting off a couple degrees warmer this morning. Give them a break until they cool down again.

Today will be a 78 degrees with rain in the morning and a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

Nymphing and swinging wets were the best bets during the day again yesterday. We should have more cloud cover today and hopefully a little rain. That could push the hatching a little earlier in the afternoon. Sulphurs, Isonychias, and olives are making up most of the hatch but cahills would be a good option too. There has been some algae on the Upper West so if you’re nymphing stick lower on the river.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

There is some haze in the air from the wildfires but so far it hasn’t been terrible. Just noticeable. Nymphing and swinging wets were the best bets during the day yesterday. Blind casting Isonychias or light cahills in the riffles (with or without a dropper) would be another option today. Sulphurs and olives should hatch as the sun is dropping offering some dry fly shots. There has been some algae on the Upper West so if you’re nymphing stick lower on the river.

Today will be 82 degrees with sun and a few clouds in the morning. We should see some additional cloud cover in the afternoon. Wind will be 5-10 mph from the South.

The West Branch has dropped back to normal flows after the rain and is in good shape this morning. The East Branch is still dropping but should level out by the weekend. Today will be 79 degrees with cloud cover in the morning clearing towards the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. There are quite a few Isonychias on the buildings this morning – always a good sign. If you’re not seeing risers blind casting bigger flies in the riffles / broken water can work well. The afternoon sun may push the olives and sulphurs in the later part of the day.

The river flows are dropping and the West Branch is wadeable and fishable this morning. The flow at Hale Eddy is 600 cfs. The East Branch has quite a bit of water in it so keep an eye on the gauges if you’re thinking of heading over there. Today will be 70 degrees with good cloud cover. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. We should see decent olives, Isonychias, and sul[hurs. Nymphing should be decent before the hatches and streamers early and late in the day. Blind casting isonychias or dry / dropper rigs through riffles should bring some fish to the net.

The forecast yesterday called for evening thunderstorms, but got a bunch of them much earlier in the day. The rain was heavy at times and the West Branch got muddy by the afternoon. People were able to find fish in between the rain both on nymphs and streamers. The sulphurs hatched late but well.

The West Branch has crested and is stained but clearing quickly. The East Branch is still muddy but will start to clear tomorrow. Definitely a day for streamers on the West and watching for rising fish in the slower corners and tails of the pools. Use extra caution when wading since the banks will be muddy.

Yesterday was hot and humid, and while some sections saw a few brief showers, other sections remained dry. The Beaverkill and lower East Branch got some rain but the West Branch did not. Always pack a rain jacket in the summer for those unexpected showers.

We’re seeing a mix of small sulphurs, olives, Isos and caddis during the day. Bring a few cahills and vitreus patterns with you as well.
