Delaware River Report / Conditions April 14, 2020

We didn’t get all day winds yesterday but we definitely got the rain.  All the river flows are way up this morning but are beginning to drop back.  The Beaverkill hit 10,000 cfs  yesterday but has already fallen to just over 5,000 cfs at Cooks Falls.  It’ll take a few days for that to run through the system.  The West Branch is in better shape but still high at 2,500 cfs.  It sounds like a lot of streams on the East Coast will be high for the next few days.  Wunderground isn’t showing any additional rain the forecast until Sunday. Check the gauge links below for the latest flows.

The river flows are up slightly so far from last night’s rain.  Not bad so far.  Wundergound shows another 1/2″ falling over the next 1o hours.  We’re coming off a warm night so water temps are in much better shape than yesterday morning.  The wind does not sound awesome this morning at 20 – 30 from the South with higher gusts possible.  But it is going to be 64 degrees which is kind of nice.  The wind forecast looks much more manageable over the next few days.

The air temp is 26 degrees this morning but should climb in to the high 50’s by late afternoon.  We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds with winds from the South at 10 – 15 mph.  That should be 10 mph less than we’ve been dealing with most of the week.  The water temps will take a while to warm back up but the sunshine should help.  Tonight will be warm but we have some rain moving in.  We should see 1/4″ overnight and another 3/4″ tomorrow.  Mid April all of a sudden feels like March.  If you’re on the Delaware and want to find rising fish watch the slower pools and edges in the afternoon.  Otherwise streamers and nymphs will probably be your best bet.  That probably applies to your local rivers if you have high flows too.

Yesterday seemed like an all day snow shower.  We didn’t have any snow accumulation in the lower elevations but it looks like the mountains may have a bit on the ground.  The water temps are starting off a few degrees lower than yesterday but they should bounce back up today.  We’re looking at 46 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun.  The wind stays with us though at 10 – 20 mph from the North.  The wind has been tough for the last few days so it’s mostly been streamer and nymph fishing.

Snow sticking to the boats this morning but not the lawn so far

Flows are up and temps are down a bit throughout the system this morning.  The Beaverkill and upper EB flows are beginning to fall.  The flow on the West Branch is still climbing.  The release from Cannonsville has been in creased to 1,499 cfs.  Wunderground nailed the wind report yesterday and it was blowing 20 to 30 mph.  Today the are calling it “blustery with a chance of snow showers” which sounds like a cold wind.  We could see snow up to 1″.  We’ll be back on a warming trend tomorrow.

Denis celebrated First Cast in spite of the quarantine in his area

It looks like the release from Pepacton has been increased bringing the East Branch flow at Downsville up to 685 cfs.  The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 1,297 cfs. We should see another 1/4″ of rain this morning and keep the clouds in the afternoon.  It’s going to be windy.  Wundergound is calling for 20 – 30 mph from the North as the front moves in.  The air temp will hit 50 but will drop back to 30 degrees overnight.  Olives, caddis, stoneflies, and a few blue quills are around. Some hendricksons have been spotted down low but the wind today will make dry fly fishing tough.  Streamers and nymphs will be the best bet today.

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 1,064 cfs.  That’s an interesting number.  A lot of people would have added one more cfs to round it to 1,065 cfs.  Not NYC DEP.  The flows on the East Branch also bumped up a bit so check the gauges for the latest flows if you’re up there.  Today will be warm again with the air temp reaching the high 50’s.  We’ll see a good mix of clouds and sun with 10 – 15 mph wind from the North.  We’ll see some cold weather moving in over the weekend but we should warm back up next week.

Today will be another mix of sun and clouds on the Upper Delaware.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North and the air temp will hit 62 degrees.  Both Cannonsville and Pepacton are at 99.6% capacity.  We do have some rain coming later in the week but it looks like less than 1″ spread out over 4 or 5 days.  It sounds like no matter where you are fishing in the Northeast it’s time to carry all of your Spring patterns and be prepared for anything.

We saw fewer mayflies on the water yesterday compared to Saturday.  We thought maybe the increased release caused that but it seemed to be system wide.  We have a few warm days ahead of us and then we chill down a bit over the weekend.  Today looks nice in the high 50’s with some sun and clouds.  Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 5, 2020

Today’s forecast is similar to what we saw yesterday.   Good cloud cover, air temp in the 50’s, and wind 5 – 10 from the West.  Maybe a chance of a shower in the morning.  The olives hatched in stronger numbers yesterday and it was definitely good to see upright wings on the water.  Caddis and stoneflies were also in the mix.  The release from Cannonsville was increased slightly to 910 cfs.  The flow at Hale Eddy is just over 1,200 cfs this morning.  We should start seeing more little black caddis and blue quills as the weather warms up this week.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 4, 2020

This is what we’re hearing from the State:  It’s okay to fish locally.  It’s not okay to travel long distances to fish.  So stay local for now.  It’s a bit early up here anyway and hopefully we won’t see any additional restrictions before the bugs start hatching and the fishing improves.

Yesterday we saw some snow falling up in the headwaters of Oquaga Creek but it didn’t stick to the found.  Most of the area had rain in the morning.  We may see a little rain this morning but that should end early.  Then it’s clouds, wind 5 – 10 mph from the North, and the air temp hitting the low 50’s.  The West Branch flow increased to just over 1,000 cfs at Hale Eddy.  The release from Cannonsville was increased to 750 cfs plus some runoff.

Once this situation passes Dave Z will get beer delivered on the river by drone again

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 3, 2020

Wunderground nailed the wind forecast yesterday.  10 – 20 mph from the North with higher gusts.  Spot on.  Today should be about the same with the wind dropping slightly in the afternoon.  Mid 40’s with a bit of rain this morning and the possibility of snow showers in some higher elevations.  The 10 day forecast looks pretty good overall.  We have a good amount of water in the system with the Upper West Branch Walton flowing in to Cannonsville over 1,000 cfs this morning.  We may see some spilling reservoirs in the next few days.  Stoneflies and olives will cover you on dries but the wind will make this a streamer and nymph day.
