Delaware River Report / Conditions August 6, 2019

We couldn’t find a cloud in the sky yesterday.  The hatching was decent on the upper West but you had to be patient to find a good fish rising.  They were eating a lot of the sulphurs just under the surface.  There were some isosychias and quite a few deficiens hatching too. On the lower West nymphing and swinging wets was the way to go.  Today may be totally different with some scattered storms moving in around noon.  Wunderground is predicting .35″ of rain spread out over the course of the day.  They are probably wrong and the most of it will slip either North or South of us.  Hopefully we get the cloud cover and keep it for the day.  If that happens we should see more olives and isonychias hatching on the lower West during the afternoon.

Water temps are hot on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville.  Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 5, 2019

It’s a cool 53 degrees out there this morning.  One of the only parts of the forecast they got right.  Instead of brief showers and light evening rain we ended up with mostly sun yesterday.  The storms went North of us and The West Branch above Cannonsville bumped up a bit but is already falling back.  If Wunderground is correct today we should see the air temp hit the low 80’s, sun, and light wind.  For rising fish look to the coldest water you can find.  Otherwise nymphs and wet flies should bring a few fish to the net.  We’re still seeing mostly sulphurs, olives, and isonychias.  Caddis are showing up again and fish are eating them when they get the opportunity.  Maybe some tricos in the morning.  If you don’t see any where you are keep moving pools.  Water temps are hot on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville.  Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 4, 2019

The release from Cannonsville was cut back a bit yesterday and the flow at Stilesville is 597 cfs this morning.  We were hit by an early rain storm but not much precip fell.  We did keep some clouds for most of the afternoon and saw more olives out than we’ve seen lately.  There were some sulphurs and isonychias mixed in.  Today looks similar but a little cooler.  We’ll have an air temp around 80 with wind 5 – 10 from the North.  We may see some scattered rain in the late afternoon.  The low tonight will be 52 degrees.

Water temps are hot on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville.  Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2019

The release from Cannonsville was increased yesterday afternoon and the flow at Stilesville is 725 cfs this morning.  The West Branch is still at a good level for wading and floating.  We had a few thunderstorms slide North and South of us yesterday but we stayed dry with mostly sunshine.  It did sections of the West Branch but missed us here on the lower end.  Today looks better with some clouds already moving in.  We should see a few storms in the afternoon with a total rainfall of 1/10th”.  We should be around 80 degrees with wind from the South 5 – 10 mph.  You may find some fish rising to tricos and olives before the fog burns off the water.  Sulphurs, olives, and isonychias are still the main hatches.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 2, 2019

Yesterday was tough in the bright sun.  Nymphing and wet flies were definitely your best bet.  The upper West is your best bet for mid afternoon dry fly action but be patient and look around for good fish.  They’ve been shy on the bright sun days but they are there.  Sulphurs, mall olives, and isonychia will cover most of the flies.  If you want to fish the mornings try to get out there before the sun hits the water.  Low light conditions and shade really help on the bright days.  Today looks like it will be a mirror image of yesterday with a bit less wind.  We’ll have mostly sun, air temp of 85 degrees, and light and variable winds.  Right now Wunderground is calling for a 60% chance of light rain tomorrow (less than 1/4″) so hopefully that brings in the cloud cover.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 1, 2019

We had a brief rain storm yesterday morning then a mix of clouds and sun for the rest of the day.  The rain wasn’t enough to really bump the river flows so were are starting off roughly where we were yesterday morning.  Nymphing and swinging wets worked in between hatches.  Sulphurs, isonychias, and olives pretty much covered the bugs.  We have seen some tricos in the morning and have some reports of fish eating them.  Today will be sunny with a high of 83 degrees.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 31, 2019

We were hit with some more rain yesterday evening but not enough to change the rivers much.  The West Branch is clear and at a decent level for wading and floating.  The release from Cannonsville was dropped back to 500 cfs.  Small olives, sulphurs, and a few isonychias are making up the bulk of the hatches.  Today will be close to 80 degrees but the sky should be mostly cloudy.  Wind from the North 5 – 10 mph.  We may see a bit of rain from some scattered storms but the predicted amount is less than 1/10″.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 30, 2019

Yesterday’s cloud cover and afternoon storm seemed to help help the fishing with decent sulphurs, olives,and some isonychias hatching.  There was an isolated storm in the afternoon that dropped some rain on some river sections and totally missed others.  It  was brief and didn’t do anything to the flows.  The release from Cannonsville was increased to 650 cfs yesterday afternoon.  Today will be a bit warmer with the air temp climbing into the mid 80’s.  We may see some afternoon thunderstorms with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Water temps are hot on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville.  Give the fish a break in those areas and fish colder water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 29, 2019

Most of the afternoon storms missed us but we did get some coming through in the early evening.  The rain fall didn’t change the rivers much and everything looks good today.  The release from Cannonsville was dropped back yesterday bringing the flow at Stilesville of 605 cfs this morning.  The West Branch looks good this morning.  We’re starting off with some sunshine this morning but should see some clouds and scattered storms move in around noon.  Wind 5 – 7 mph from the South.  Total precip should be around 1/10th” so the flows will not be affected.  There are a lot of small olives on the door this morning so definitely have those ready today.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 28, 2019

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 650 cfs.  It’s still a good level for wading and floating.  Today is the day we break from the constant sunshine.  Couds should roll in around noon with scattered thunderstorms for the rest of the day.  Total rainfall is .3″ so the rivers should be fine.  The wind will peak around 9 mph from the South and drop in the afternoon.  The clouds and rain make it look like a great day to be on the water.  Yesterday was another bright, sunny day so we’re looking forward to the change in the weather.  Sulphurs, isonychias, and definitely olives should be in your box today.  We’ve seen a few Potamanthus out there too so add a few of those.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 27, 2019

Yesterday was another sunny day with tough dry fly conditions.  Nymphing or swinging wets were definitely the way to go until you found a decent fish rising.  Today we’re looking at 84 degrees, sunshine, and wind to 6 mph from the South.  Much like yesterday start off fishing underneath and switch it up when you find rising fish.  Look for areas that get shade earlier and be ready for some sulphurs and isonychias toward evening.  It’s going to be a pleasant day to be on the water.  Your best shot at olives may be before the sun hits the water this morning. The weather definitely improves for fishing tomorrow with some afternoon storms moving in bringing clouds and just over 1/4″ of rain.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 26, 2019

Overall it was a tough day on the river in the sun.  We had fewer clouds than predicted.  There were some sulphurs and isonychias hatching and some fish rising but it was a good day to nymph or swing wets.  There were some olives mixed in during the evening.  We’ll have similar weather today with the air temp reaching the low 80’s sunshine, and light winds.  We’re coming off another cool night.   They pushed up our next rain forecast to Sunday but less than 1/10th”.  The cloud cover will be nice.
