Delaware River Report / Conditions July 14, 2014

Good morning everyone! We finally received the rain we were waiting for.  While the river is high and off color for the moment, Stilesville should still be fish-able.  The rest of the West Branch should begin to clear by this afternoon and become prime for wading by sometime tomorrow.  This rain should keep the system fishing well for the rest of the month.

The graph shows the waters here are still clear enough to fish!

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 13, 2014

Yesterday was a continuation of the normal sulphur hatching on the upper river plus a light mix of sulphurs, olives, and Isos on the lower sections.  The fish were willing to rise during the day in shaded areas.  We had more clouds than the weatherman called for during the day which was a huge help.  Today it looks like they are calling for periods of rain, some brief periods may be heavy.  We’ll wait and see- most of their recent predictions of heavy rain have fallen short for those of us on the West Branch.  The water temps remain cool with the West Branch under the Hancock Bridge at 58 degrees this morning.  On July 11th Cannonsville Reservoir was at 97.9% capacity.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 12, 2014

That was an interesting night.  It seems the best hatching was late afternoon into early evening with sulphurs and a few summer stenos mixed in for a few hours.  The normal sulphur hatches were going in Deposit but the fish were hesitant to rise in the bright sun so people who moved a bit and searched out rising fish did better.  The air temperature dropped at dark and while there were a few fish eating left over duns the spinners never really materialized- hopefully we see them tonight!We may get a brief shower late this afternoon that could turn on the small olives and Isonychias.  Tomorrow looks like we are going to have intermittent storms all day which will be a welcome relief to the sun.  The West Branch is 56 degrees under the Hancock Bridge this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 11, 2014

We had a few extra clouds come in yesterday afternoon that helped us deal with the heat.  We are seeing a continuation of the evening hatches on the mid to lower West Branch with a few more Summer Stenos than Isonychias showing up on the water.  The sulphurs are still coming at dark followed by the spinners into dark.  Nymphing is best on the mid to lower river due to the green slime on the upper sections.  It’s been most productive in the mornings before the sun really hits the water.  The Upper West Branch still has the daytime sulphurs mixed with a few Isos and small olives on rainy days.  If we do get a shower move down river to alleviate some of the summertime fog.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 10, 2014

We had a very brief heavy rain storm hit the West Branch around 5 Pm last night that really seemed to get the bugs and fish going but did little to the flow or clarity of the water.  Isonychias, Olives, and Cahills fished well into the evening with a flush of sulphurs coming at dark.  The flow at Hale Eddy is 676 cfs so we are in good shape for wading and floating while the temperature under the Hancock Bridge is 56 degrees this morning.  Today looks warm with some sun and very little wind.  As of yesterday Cannonsville is at 98.4% capacity and Pepacton is 99.5%.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 9, 2014

We had some violent storms pass through the area last night and some frightening weather warnings but the West Branch came through just fine.  Stilesville is still running a steady 598 cfs and Hale Eddy is 687 cfs.  The West Branch is clear enough to fish this morning with just a touch of color that may actually help the fishing by making the fish feel a little safer.  We are at decent levels for floating and wading and the mid to lower WB should drop slightly throughout the day.  The temperature under the Hancock Bridge is a cool 59 degrees this morning.  It looks like the Beaverkill and lower East Branch were affected the most by the storms and both rivers are still rising this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 8, 2014

We had a bit of rain last night but not enough to really change the rivers.  The flow at Stilesville is up to 598 this morning but looks like it has leveled off.  Hopefully this slight rise will help flush some of the green slime out of the upper river.  The slime hasn’t hurt the dry fly fishing but has made nymphing above Hale Eddy difficult.  The daytime sulphur hatches are still going strong with the occasional Isonychia mixed in.  The mid to lower West Branch has been fishing in the late afternoons and evenings with the usual mix of sulphus, summer stenos, and Isonychias.  They are calling for isolated T storms today and tomorrow.  Tough to say whether they will hit us or not but the cloud cover and rain would be a welcome sight on the river.  The temperature under the Hancock Bridge was 58 degrees this morning and Cannonsville is 98.7%.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 7, 2014

The daytime sulphurs are hatching on the West Branch offering some decent shots at fish even in the sun.  They have been challenging in the clear water so we’ve found emergers and half and half patterns to be the most effective.  There are Isonychias in the riffles and a few Cahills mixed in during the day with the majority of them coming off in the evening.  The lowe West also has sulphurs coming off at dark offering some decent spinner fishing.  We may get some T Storms over the next few days which will be a welcome sight- hopefully they bring lots of cloud cover and the olives!  The temperature at the Hancock Bridge is 59 degrees this morning- not too bad for July 7th.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 6, 2014

It seems like the normal Delaware pattern is in place.  Morning s can be decent with caddis and nymphing the riffles.  The mid day Deposit sulphur hatches have started and offer some decent fishing during the day.  In the evening keep an eye out for a second round of sulphurs, some summer stenos / cahills, and Isonychias.  The West Branch is clear and perfect for wading and floating.  The other rivers in the system have begun to drop and clear.  The cool temperatures yesterday and last night really helped the rivers and we are starting off at 57 degrees under the Hancock Bridge this morning.  If we get some clouds rolling through the West Branch could fish throughout the day with stenos and small olives.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 5, 2014

We hope everyone enjoyed their fourth! Despite the wind, yesterday was a real taste of summer: afternoon sulphurs in Deposit, drifting iso’s through the riffs, and some pseudocloeon .  Today should be an exact repeat!  If you come up, dress a little warmer because the mornings and the evenings have been slightly chillier than usual.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 4, 2014

Happy 4th of July!  Once again we had a line of thunderstorms hit the system and the West Branch came through just fine.  The flow at Hale Eddy bumped last night but has come back down to a decent level and the clarity looks fine this morning.  The Upper East may offer some additional opportunity with a flow of 531 at Harvard this morning (it may be climbing slowly so watch the gauges).  We were seeing decent sulphur activity mixed with a few Isonychias on the WB yesterday afternoon until the rain became to heavy.  We have clouds and some light rain this morning so we are hoping for a continuation of the daytime hatching.  As of the reservoir update yesterday morning Pepacton was at 99.9% capacity so you may see the flows increase on the East Branch if it spills.  Cannonsville was at 98.7% capacity and the current inflow at Walton is 563 cfs.  The temperature at the Hancock Bridge this morning is 61 degrees.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 3, 2014

The West Branch came through yesterday’s storms virtually untouched and is running 606 cfs at Hale Eddy this morning with a temperature of 59 degrees under the Hancock Bridge.  Seems like we were extremely lucky and avoided the localized flooding on other sections of the system.  There is potential for smaller storms today that could help the fishing and hopefully give us some cloud cover. The nymphing definitely improved yesterday and we did have some fish on top in the evening on sulphurs.
