Delaware River Report / Conditions October 16, 2021

Yesterday felt like late August with 80 degrees and a mix of sun and clouds.  People did find fish on a mix of streamers and a few dry flies in the afternoon.  Still mostly olives with a few Heptagenia and Isonychias in spots.  Today will be totally different with a high of 70 degrees and wind 10 – 20 mph from the South.  Wunderground iscalling for a 95% chance of rain up to 1/2″ today. That forecast keeps changing so keep and eye on the radar.  Hopefully the storms slide South of us.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 15, 2021

The tailwater releases are  still steady so the East and West branches are pretty much in the same shape as yesterday.  Today is going to be warmer hitting 76 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms.  The rain today should not amount to much but the cloud cover will be good.  We’re still fishing a lot of blue wing olives but are seeing Heptagenia and Isonychias (heavier on some river sections).  tomorrow’s forecast is shifting around but it looks like rain in the morning with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 14, 2021

The river levels are still steady on the tailwaters so there are some wade opportunities but we are running a bit high.  The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in good shape to so there are a lot of options.  Today looks god with cloud cover, 70 degrees, and wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  Olives are still making up the bulk of the bugs but there are decent Heptagenia and Isonychias on some river sections.  The bushes are full of caddis so they will hit the water eventually.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 13, 2021

The flow at Stilesville is a steady 863 cfs.  Today looks a lot like yesterday.  Clouds early giving way to sunshine.  Should be less wind.  There were olives on the water mid afternoon along with some Heptagenia.  We didn’t see huge numbers of bugs but it was enough to get some fish up and feeding.  Cloud cover and breaks in the wind definitely helped.  Nymphing was a good choice early in the day and during the sunny part of the afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 12, 2021

No change in the Cannonsville release so the flow at Stilesville is 863 cfs.  There are some places to wade at the current level.  We can’t get data to pull up for most of the gauges this morning but the flows are dropping so slowly on most rivers it doesn’t really matter.  We shouldn’t see any significant rain over the next couple of days so the fishing shouldn’t change much either.  Most people are still fishing nymphs or streamers early in the day and switching to dry flies in the afternoon.  Olives, Heptagenia, and some Isonychias make up the bulk of the mayflies.  The bushes are full of caddis.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 11, 2021

The release from Cannonsville stayed just under 900 cfs so the river will be the same as yesterday.  People are wading some spots at this level.  It fished well yesterday.  We had a lot of good reports from people dry fly and streamer fishing.  Olives with a few Isonychias and Heptagenias.  It was overcast, overall light wind, with a heavy mist at times.  A great Fall fishing day.  We’re going to start off cloudy today but will gain more sunshine this afternoon.  71 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph out of the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 10, 2021

The release from Cannonsville has been cut back again.  The flow at Stilesville 863 cfs.  This opens up some places for wading.  Yesterday was a streamer / nymph day with some people finding fish on top and others not.  The wind was definitely a factor there.  We also heard good reports of Isonychia spinners in the air.  Hopefully they hit the water while there is still light.  Today will be 66 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun.  Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 9, 2021

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped again and the flow at Stilesville is 978 cfs.  Not quite where we would like to see it but headed in the right direction.  Although there will still be the normal color in the water it will clear a bit as the flow drops.  Yesterday ended as we predicted with streamers and nymphs early followed by some dry fly fish in the afternoon.  We’re seeing mostly olives with some Heptagenia and Isonychias.  The bushes are full of caddis again.  Today will be cooler hitting 62 degrees with cloud cover.  Wind 10 – 15 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 8, 2021

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped a bit and the flow at Stilesville is 1,180 cfs this morning.  It’s still too high to wade but it’s a start.  It will still have the color at this release but the fish and bugs don’t mind it.  Hopefully the release drops more over the next few days.  We’re in the midst of some warmer days but the cloud cover has been decent and the river temps are holding on even on the Mainstem.  Today will be in the low 70’s again with the cloud cover.  It’ll probably be the same program with streamers or nymphs early and afternoon olives in the long slow pools.  The Beaverkill and Willowemoc flows are dropping and those two rivers still offer the best wade opportunities.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 7, 2021

Today looks like a good day with light wind and good cloud cover.  Most people have been fishing streamers early and finding some fish rising later in the afternoon.  There are a lot of Pseudos hatching plus some Heptagenia and Isonychias.  Look for rising fish in slow sections.  At these water levels it’s tough for the fish to set up in a lot places.  The Beaverkill is just over 1,000 cfs this morning so barring anymore rain we should see some wade opportunities open up there over the next few days.  The headwaters of the Beaverkill and Willowemoc should offer some wade opportunities today.  The West and East Branch flows will stay high until the releases are cut back.  The color of the West Branch will also improve when the release is cut back.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 6, 2021

We woke up o some light rain this morning.  That should end shortly and should not add any additional runoff to the rivers.  The West Branch is still high and off color.  The East Branch and Beaverkill flows have dropped a lot.  Everything is still too high for safe wading.  The upper stretches of the freestones should be fine for wading this morning.  Most people are catching fish on streamers early and olives in the late afternoon.  We should see 68 degrees today with little wind and decent cloud cover.  The 10 day forecast does not show any significant rain so the river flows should continue to drop.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 5, 2021

The river flows are up throughout the system due to yesterday’s rain.  The rivers are off color but should clear as they drop over the next few days.  We shouldn’t see any appreciable amount of rain today but we should keep the clouds.  Wind will be light and variable.  A good day to throw streamers from a boat.  There is always a shot at dry fly fishing  on the West so bring that rod just in case.  Long slow pools at these flows.  Wading isn’t recommended on any of the rivers today.  Some of the headwater streams would be the best bet.
