Delaware River Report / Conditions August 5, 2017
We had some very localized thunderstorms yesterday that did add some water to the system. The West Branch is climbing at Hale Eddy but is clear enough to fish this morning in Hancock. Stilesville is still pretty steady and is flowing at 526 cfs- the same as yesterday morning. Streamers could be a good choice early with the higher flows on the lower West Branch. So far it is clear enough for the fish to rise if the olives and cahills hatch in the afternoon. The river above Oquaga Creek should be fine and hold the usual mix of afternoon olives and sulphurs. We should see cloud cover most of the day but no rain. There is a slight chance of a passing shower but it looks slim.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 4, 2017
The thunderstorms in yesterday’s forecast missed us. The rivers are still dropping this morning and everything is clear. We’re still fishing sulphurs and olives on the upper river sections with cahills and a few isonycias mixed in- heavier on the cahills. There have been some golden drakes around but the majority of the fishing is on smaller flies. There are Tricos around but spinners have been more productive in the morning. Water temperatures remain good on the West Branch and Upper East Branch. The lower East, lower Beaverkill, and Mainstem have all warmed up again after the last few days. We may see some afternoon thunderstorms today but we’ll see. A lot of them have been sliding either north or south of us.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2017
Well the weather report said there was a chance of a thunderstorm yesterday. We definitely got one. We had a good rain, wind, and a little hail. We lost power for a few hours in the afternoon but everything returned to normal by the evening. Balls Creek seemed to be the only one spewing color in the afternoon. That’s due to some construction farther upstream. That cleared by dark and all of the rivers look good this morning. The flows bumped slightly on the eastern drainage and all of the river temps are starting off a few degrees colder than yesterday. The upper West Branch had the usual small olives and sulphurs. The lower West definitely fished better with nymphs. Today looks decent with cloud cover and air temperatures in the high 70’s. Winds should stay under 5 mph. There is another chance of a late afternoon thunderstorm but we’ll have to watch the radar to see how it tracks.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 2, 2017
Yesterday the clouds appeared later than expected. We had to deal with the sunshine early but we even saw a very brief late afternoon shower. Sulphurs and olives were the main hatches on the upper West Branch. The sunshine and water temps pushed the hatching late on the West. Nymphing has been the most productive method on the lower section until the sun drops behind the hills. We may see some storms move through today. If they track over us we may see some earlier hatching below Hale Eddy. The total amount of precipitation in the forecast is negligible so we’re really counting on the cloud cover. The Mainstem, lower East Branch and lower Beaverkill are all warming up after the last few days of heat and sun. Stick to the upper East and the West Branch.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 1, 2017
The sun was bright yesterday. Really, really bright. And hot. The upper West Branch and the upper East Branch were the places to be. You’ll find sulphurs, olives, cahills, and a few Isonychias up there. Use your thermomter and concentrate on the water in the 50’s. Today looks like a better day with some clouds and cooler air temperatures. We may see some showers in the afternoon if the thunderstorms hit us. Most of the weather still seems to slide north of us though. Winds look good at 5 – 7 mph.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 31, 2017
The best fishing today will be on the upper West Branch and upper East Branch. Look for the coldest water. There should be daytime sulphurs and olives in Deposit and Stilesville. Although small flies have been working better carry some Cahills, Isonychias, and Golden Drakes just in case. Areas with mid day shade will also fish better. Yesterday’s bright sun and hot air temperature bumped the water temps up just enough to push most of the mid to lower river hatching to dark. Find the water in the 50’s. Today’s air temperature will be cooler at 80 degrees but the sun is going to shine. The lower East Branch, Mainstem, and lower Beaverkill all warmed up into the high 60’s yesterday. We’re leaving them alone until they cool back down.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 30, 2017
The water temps dropped a few degrees throughout the system due to the nighttime temperatures in the 50’s. The rivers have dropped back a little as the runoff subsides and everything looks good this morning. Once again the hatches were dominated by small olives and sulphurs but some sections had decent numbers of golden drakes. We should have clear weather to day with light winds. Nymphing or swinging wet flies may be a good bet early. Mid day look for sulphurs and olives on the upper West Branch. Once the sun drops behind the hills the dry fly fishing should pick up on the lower sections of river.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 29, 2017
Olives. We had fewer clouds than forecasted but people were able to find fish rising to olives and sulphurs. Besides the duns we are seeing decent numbers of olive spinners during the hatch so look closely at the water when you find risers. Definitely carry your summer sulphurs / cahills in #14 – 16 and a few isonychias. The iso hatch has been spread out but they are around. A few Golden Drakes have been spotted along with the Tricos. The trico fishing should get better as the runoff subsides and the flow slows down. Mid to lower West Branch is in decent shape for nymphing. Smaller flies seem to be working better even underneath. We’re looking at more sun today with just a few clouds. Cooler air temperatures will help. We should drop down to 50 degrees tonight. If you plan on fishing the Upper Main, Lower East, or Lower Beaverkill check the water temps first. The sunshine over the last couple of days has brought those water temperatures back up.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 28, 2017
We had a mix of sun and clouds yesterday afternoon and the fish were definitely happier when the clouds were around. The Upper West Branch has settled into the normal summer fishing with sulphurs and olives. The mid to lower West Branch was a lot of small olives and some cahills / summer stenos. Lordville peaked at 63 degrees yesterday and there were some good Upper Mainstem reports of cahills, caddis, and olives. Today looks like a copy of yesterday with good cloud cover and no precipitation in the forecast. The clouds definitely help but fishing did pick up even more once the sun dropped behind the hills. Nighttime temperatures are dropping into the 50’s. The combination of clouds and cool nights have really helped the water temperatures on the Upper Mainstem and Lower East Branch.

The rivers are still dropping and are looking better today. The West Branch, Upper East, and Beaverkill all look good this morning. The lower East and Main are still off color but improving. Olives an sulphurs are still the main fare with a few cahills and isonychias mixed in for good measure. Tricos and a few Potomanthus are around but not in large numbers yet. Today looks like a good olive day with great cloud cover this morning. We may see an afternoon / early evening shower but the precipitation amounts should be negligible. The wind forecast looks ideal peaking around 6 mph. Swinging wets has been productive before the hatches.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 26, 2017
Despite the color the West Branch fished well yesterday. The fish were eating streamers well in the morning. By mid-day there were decent olives hatching and the fish were eating them in the slower pools. There were a few sulphurs and cahills hatching to round things out. The West Branch looks much better this morning. The runoff is subsiding and the release from Cannonsville has been increased to 500 cfs adding more clean water. The cloudy days and cooler nights kept the water temperatures in better shape on the lower Beaverkill and lower East Branch. The Beaverkill looked good yesterday afternoon but the lower East is still pretty dirty in Hancock. Today looks really good with cloud cover and winds peaking around 7 mph. Wunderground shows no rain for today. We are seeing a few tricos around. That will get better as the water drops and the hatch moves forward.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 25, 2017
The best bet for dry fly action is going to be above Oquaga Creek on the West Branch. We were hit with more rain overnight but the flow in Stilesville is 339 cfs this morning. It should be clear and fishable up there and it is definitely wadeable. The lower West Branch is off color but looks really good for streamer fishing. The flow at Hale Eddy is 1,140 cfs so if you are wading below Deposit pick your spots carefully. The Eastern drainage is definitely off color and running high. The flow in Downsville is 136 cfs and the flow at Harvard is 1,150 cfs. There’s a lot of water in those feeder creeks right now. We may get a little more rain today but Wunderground is only predicting .03″. We should keep the cloud cover which will help the olive and sulphur fishing on the upper West Branch.
