Delaware River Report / Conditions July 8, 2018

Today should be a repeat of yesterday.  Sun with a few clouds, cooler, and light wind.  A pleasant day to be on the water after the extreme heat.  The upper West Branch is your best bet for daytime dry fly action.  Sulpurs, cahills, and caddis will make up the bulk of the bugs but we are seeing more isonychias and olives now.  The mid to lower West Branch has been fishing in the morning and again in the evening.  There are some tricos around but we haven’t seen great numbers of them yet.  Nymphing has been productive during the day.  We’ve been doing better on smaller nymphs that match the sulphurs and olives.

While the overnight cold temperature helped drop most of the water temps in the system we are still dealing with low flows and bright sun.  If you are fishing for trout do not fish the Mainstem, lower East Branch, or the lower Beaverkill.  Check the water temperatures in other areas before you fish.  The West Branch and upper East Branch are your best bets for cold water and fish.

We had decent cloud cover most of yesterday morning.  By afternoon it was a mix of clouds and sun with some pretty good wind.  The wind was the cold front coming in finally giving us a night in the high 40’s.  We should have sunshine today but the temp will stay in the low to mid 70’s.  Fish were caught on nymphs during the day but there was some dry fly action on a few sulphurs and caddis.   The dry fly fishing was definitely better if you could find a spot out of the wind.

We woke up to some light rain  this morning but the total accumulation should be less than 1/10″.  The cloud cover is a welcome change.  The sun will poke out later but we will keep some of the clouds too.  It looks like a good morning to look for risers on the lower West Branch.  We have a few sulphurs, isonychias, and small olives on the door.  The air temp is only going to climb to 75 degrees today and the overnight temp should be around 50 degrees.  The heat wave has broken.  The rain / thunderstorms in yesterday’s forecast missed us.  Most of the hatching on the lower West Branch happened after dark last night.  The water temps climbed into the mid 60’s with the lower release and sunshine.   Fishing underneath was abetter bet during the day.  The temps shouldn’t climb as fast today with the change in the weather.

The thunderstorms went North of us.  We could hear them but we didn’t get any of the rain.  If Wunderground is correct we have an 80% chance of rain this afternoon beginning around 1 pm.  The air temperature is definitely cooler this morning and we should peak around 81 degrees this morning.  The cloud cover looks great this morning already.  Nymphing or swinging wets will be your best bet early but if we get the rain have your dry fly rod ready.  It may push the sulphurs and olives to hatch a little earlier in the day.  Most of the rain should soak into the ground but I would have a few streamers handy just in case we get a little color in the water.  It could get really good on the leading edge.  The release from Cannonsville has been dropped to 415 cfs this morning in anticipation of the rain.

If you are fishing for trout do not fish the Mainstem, lower East Branch, or the lower Beaverkill.  Check the water temperatures in other areas before you fish.  The West Branch and upper East Branch are your best bets for cold water and fish.

While we watched a few clouds come by during the day, yesterday was another bright, sunny day.  There were some caddis out during the day but nymphing and swinging wet flies were the way to go to catch fish.  Match the size of the active bugs right now so think small sulphurs and cahills.  The best bet for dry fly during the day would be to head close to Cannonsville and the colder water temperatures.  The mid to lower West Branch should turn on in the evening as the sun drops.  Blind fishing isonychias in the riffles or covering one time risers with a caddis would be good bets.  Today will be cooler with the air temp hitting the mid to high 80’s.  We may see a thunderstorm or two in the afternoon but the forecasted precipitation is less than 1/10th”.  Tomorrow looks good with an 80% chance of rain.

Yesterday was another day of bright sun and warm temps.  But we had a decent mid afternoon sulphur hatch on the lower West Branch.  Totally unexpected.  The bugs came and the fish were on them for a few hours despite the weather.   Nymphing and wet flies were decent before and after the sulphur hatch.  The caddis came back in the evening offering some more dry fly fishing once the sun dropped a bit.  The release from Cannonsville was dropped a bit to 615 cfs.  The flow at Downsville is up to 157 cfs so it looks like the release on the East Branch was increased slightly.  We did have some scattered thunderstorms that look like they hit above Cannonsville.  The West Branch at Walton above the dam jumped to 715 cfs.  We should have a few more clouds today with the possibility of some scattered storms.  The West Branch and East Branch above Harvard will still be your best bets for trout.  The lower East, Mainstem, and Beaverkill at Cooks Falls are all still to warm to fish.

Nmphing and wets were definitely the best bets in yesterdays sun.  The dry fly fishing is best early and late.  Sulphurs, caddis, and a few cahills are making up the bulk of the bugs we’re seeing.  The are some small olives out just at dark but most fish seem to be keying on the sulphurs.  A tan #18 caddis has been our go to fly on one or two time risers.  The cold water release is keeping the West Branch in great shape during the heat wave.  We peaked at 64 degrees at the 191 Bridge.  The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, Beaverkill at Cooks Fall, and Mainstem are all starting off over 70 degrees this morning.  The East Branch at Harvard peaked over 70 degrees yesterday and probably will again today.  If you are looking for trout stick to the West Branch or the East Branch up towards Downsville.

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 715 cfs.  This should keep the West Branch cool today.  It’s great to see some much needed cold water coming down the river.  810 cfs at Hale Eddy is good for both wading and floating.  There is some algae floating through on the upper sections but that should flush out.  Today looks like a repeat of yesterday with bright sun and the air temp reaching 90 degrees.  The best dry fly action will be early and late in the day during low light conditions.  We mostly saw caddis and sulphurs on the water last night.  Nymphing or swinging wets during the day will be your best bet and paid off for some people yesterday.  Look for pools that have good afternoon shade.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Harvard and Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday.  Fishs Eddy and Lordville are starting off over 70 degrees this morning.  If you are fishing for trout stick to the West Branch or go up to Downsville on the East.

We’re hearing we may get an additional 300 cfs release from Cannonsville Reservoir this afternoon.  The additional cold water should help keep the river cool over the next few days.  We’ll update as soon as we see the additional water coming down.  It’s going to be hot out there today.  The air temp will be in the low 90’s with sun and light winds from the South.  Look for shade and bring plenty of water. Fish with your thermometer.  The lower EB, Beaverkill, and Mainstem will heat up today.  The West Branch and Upper East Branch should be fine.  Check the temperature on any freestones before you fish.

Sulphurs, cahills, and caddis made up the bulk of what we saw yesterday.  There were sulphurs hatching mid day but the majority of them came in the evening.  Swinging wet flies or nymphing were the best bets during the day.  There was still a bit of color in the West Branch so people were throwing streamers and catching fish too.  The river cleared up nicely by mid day and is in good shape this morning.

All the rivers in the system still have some runoff pushing through this morning.  The West Branch is in good shape and looks good out front.  It was off color most of yesterday but fishable.  There were fish landed on streamers and dry flies.  Oquaga Creek was pushing a lot of silt so anyone above that had clear, low water in Stilesville.  Dark streamers seemed to produce the best but caddis, sulphurs, and cahills were hatching in the evening.  The river is much clearer this morning and is at 721 cfs and falling at Hale Eddy. The air temp will begin to climb today as we enter another heat wave.  Streamers are still a viable option today and there are Pseudos on the door this morning.  Most of the mayflies came in the evening but the caddis should be active in the sunshine.

The rain fell on and off for most of yesterday.  We topped it off with a couple of thunderstorms overnight.  All of the rivers are up a bit but still low enough to wade.  The West Branch has some color but it is fishable and there are already a few people out there.  The cooler air temps, rain, and cloud cover helped the water temps drop throughout the system.  We should see a little more rain today but the total will be less than 1/4″.  Winds will be 5 – 10 mph from the West.  The flows should level out and begin to drop this afternoon.  The West Branch usually clears quickly.  The West Branch above Oquaga Creek has barely bumped and is clear and cold.  It looks like a great day to start off throwing streamers in the morning and look for rising fish in the afternoon.  Cahills, sulphurs, and olives should make up the bulk of the menu.  If the wind forecast is correct the caddis should be active too.

Yesterday morning’s clouds gave way to sun and wind. The river levels have dropped back after Sunday’s thunderstorms and are clear. The wind kept the bugs off the water early in the day but once it dropped there were good numbers of caddis, cahill spinners and sulphurs. There will be plenty of sun today. Look for fish in the shade or eating caddis. Be ready once the sun drops behind the hills.
