Delaware River Report: July 17, 2024
The release from Cannonsville is back to normal at 500 cfs. Yesterday’s storms missed us on the lower West and everything looks good this morning. We’re in the normal Summer program so the midday sulphurs and olives plus a few Isonychias and cahills should be hatching in the coldest water. The mid to lower West is best for nymphs or wets during the day and we should see the hatches as the sun drops. We may see some afternoon thunderstorms but Wunderground is only calling for .15″ so far. They generally slide around us but the clouds and maybe some rain could push the hatches a bit.
Today will be 85 degrees, partly cloudy this morning, and some some possible afternoon thunderstorms. Total rainfall should be .15″ Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.
The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem water temps are all too hot to fish this morning. It’s time to give these rivers a break.

The release from Cannonsville is 700 cfs until further notice. That could change in an hour or who knows so click on the Stilesville gauge link below for the latest flows. Generally they have been dropping it back to 500 cfs at 9 am but they did not specify that today. We had some brief but decent thunderstorm last evening but all the rain soaked into the ground. It didn’t bump the river flows and the West Branch looks good out front at 6:30 this morning. So normal Summer program it is. Midday sulphurs and olives in the upper river sections. There will be some Isonychias and cahills too. Nymphing or swinging wets will be the best bet on the mid to lower West until the sun drops. Blind casting Isonychia or cahill dry flies in the riffles could pay off.
Today will be 89 degrees with clouds and sun this morning and some some possible afternoon thunderstorms. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.

Yesterday’s 900 cfs release from Cannonsville was a pulse and we were back at a 500 cfs release by mid morning. Last night the pulse was 700 cfs and will drop back to 500 cfs at 9 am. Midday sulphurs and olives on the upper river sections are still the best bets for dry fly fishing. There are some Isonychias and cahills mixed in too. We may see some thunderstorms this morning but the rain total should be negligible. That could push some bugs on the lower West but nymphing or swinging wets will be the best bets there until the sun drops.
Today will be 90 degrees with some possible rain showers his morning and some sunshine in the afternoon. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: July 13, 2024
The clouds stuck around most of yesterday with the sun poking through occasionally. We’re in the normal West Branch Summer program with midday sulphurs, olives, and a few Isonychias close to the dams and evening olives, cahills, and Isonychias on the mid to lower West Branch. Nymphing or swinging wets will be the best bets early in the day and on the lower sections until the sun drops. Today will be sunny and hot again so finding the river sections that get shade early could pay off.
Today will be 87 degrees with sun and clouds mixed. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Yesterday was a nice day to be on the water with good cloud cover. The upper West fished with sulphurs and small olives while people on the lower West did well casting Isonychias. it fished the way Summer should fish on the West Branch. Today should be overcast again but we do have a little sun poking through. If we keep the cloud cover it should fish a lot like yesterday.
Today will be 80 degrees and overcast. There may be a stray shower. Wind will be light and variable.

Most of yesterday’s storms slid North of us here on the lower West Branch. The West is clear with a 500 cfs release. We did get hit with one storm but Oquaga Creek didn’t even bump so any rain we got soaked into the ground. We’ll have cloud cover today which should help the daytime fishing. Sulphurs, olives and Isonychias on the upper rivers. The mid to lower West will again be nymphing or wets early with the hatches coming as the sun drops. Blind casting Isonychias or cahills in the riffles could pay off too.
Today will be 78 degrees with some clouds and a slight chance of rain. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The release from Cannonsville is back to 500 cfs. We have a mix of sun and clouds this morning. So back to normal with nymphing or swinging wets being the best bets early. The best dry fly fishing will again be closest to the dams with midday sulphurs and olives. The cloud cover should pick up after lunch with a chance of thunderstorms. Hopefully that will push the Isonychias, olives, and cahills on the mid to lower West Branch. The best chance of precip is around dark with Wunderground calling for .6″ overnight. Overall we’ve been dry so a lot of that should soak into the ground.
Today will be 88 degrees with sunshine and a few clouds this morning. The cloud cover should pick up in the afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.

The release from Cannonsville was increased to 800 cfs again last night. They are saying the 800 cfs will be in effect until further notice. Click on the Stilesville link below for the most up to date information. It’s going to be hot and sunny again much like yesterday. We had a brief rain shower this morning but none of the creeks have bumped so far. The best bet for dry fly fishing will be close to the dams with the afternoon sulphurs, olives, and some Isonychias. There is algae in Deposit so nymphing will be better mid to low West Branch. The lower West should have olives, sulphurs, cahills, and Isonychias as the sun drops.
Today will be 92 degrees with sunshine and a few clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. There is a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm.

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 800 cfs. The release will be stepped down back to 500 cfs beginning at 8 am. This is likely to prevent the Mainstem at Lordville temp from exceeding 75 degrees. We’re in for another bright day. Sulphurs and olives in Deposit will be your best shot at midday dry fly fishing. There is algae up there and with the bump in release nymphing will be hard. Nymphing will be best on the mid to lower West after the algae settles. Towards dark we should see some olives, cahills, and Isonychias into dark. Sometimes the push of cold water can push the bugs a little earlier so there may be some afternoon dry fly fishing. Find the banks that get shade the earliest.
Today will be 89 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be light and variable.

The lower West has cleared after the slug of runofff pushed through yesterday afternoon and it looks good this morning. We’ll have a lot of sunshine to day so nymphing or swinging wets will be the best bet on the mid to lower West. We should see olives, sulphurs, some cahills, and some Isonychias once the sun drops. The upper West has some midday sulphurs and tiny olives. There has been some algae up top so it is more of a dry fly play.

Delaware River Report: July 6, 2024
Noon Update: There is color in the lower West Branch as the runoff passes through. It should begin to clear as the flows drop.
We had some rain overnight and the flow at Hale Eddy is 938 cfs. It is already dropping back. As of 6:30 am it’s clear out front. If that changes we’ll post an update. The flow at Stilesville is still 509 cfs. We had some color in the lower West yesterday and some people did well throwing streamers. There was some dry fly action in the evening. The daytime sulphur hatches are offering some mid day shots closer to the dams. There is algae in Deposit so nymphing is tough on the upper river.
Today will be 86 degrees with sun and clouds mixed. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. There is a slight chance of a stay afternoon shower.
The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville water temps all peaked at 70 degrees or higher yesterday. It’s still time to give these rivers a break.
