Delaware River Report / Conditions October 31, 2014

Happy Halloween!  The release from Cannonsville has been increased this morning but the all of the rivers in the system remain wadeable.  Today looks like a nice day to be on the water for the end of October.  We should have air temps in the low 50’s and winds around 4 mph.  We won’t see too many more days like this so if you have the opportunity to fish you should take it.  We are looking at a temperature drop and some rain tomorrow.  Nymphing is your best bet early and there is still the possibility of seeing some fish eat olives on top in the afternoon.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 46 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 30, 2014

The forecast looks pretty decent today before the front moves in bringing the cold temperatures and light rain tomorrow night through the weekend.  We should hit 50 degrees today with winds gusting to 8 mph but averaging more like 5 mph. We should see some pseudos hatching plus the last little flushes of the Isonychias.  Dark caddis have worked okay on sporadic fish that are eating left over spinners and dead caddis in the larger pools.  Nymphing has been okay but most effective mid morning with caddis pupa and small pheasant tails working best.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 51 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 29, 2014

It felt like summer out there yesterday!  We were definitely over 70 degrees and it was a great day for late October.  There were some olives and some fish reacting to them.  When you’re looking for rising fish this time a year remember to keep moving.  If you see the olives on the water for a while and no fish working move to another spot.  Some fish rise well this time of year and others seem to eat underneath more.  Nymphing was okay yesterday- mostly pheasant tails and caddis pupa fished over drop offs.  The West Branch is coming up slightly this morning but remains wadeable along with the rest of the system.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 53 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 28, 2014

Yesterday ended up being as pleasant as predicted.  Once the sun came out everything warmed up and it was a great day to be on the water.  There were some olives hatching and a welcomed but unexpected brief hatch of Isonychias.  The fish were eating but in late fall it seems your best bet is usually to move around until you see active fish.  Today’s weather prediction looks incredible with air temps around 70 degrees and light winds.  Today is likely the warmest day we will see until Spring.  Definitely take advantage of it if you have the opportunity.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 49 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 27, 2014

The cold just didn’t want to let go yesterday.  It ended up being a damp cool day with a few sprinkles that made you feel the cold in your bones.  It already feels warmer this morning and we should be in the high 50s with winds 5 to 8 mph.  It already feels much nicer than yesterday plus we have predicted air temps of 68 degrees for tomorrow.  We should see an increase of olives hatching on the warmer afternoons, plus one or two Isonychias.  The fish still seem to have the Isos in their memory bank so quite a few of them will eat an well presented Iso- especially in the broken water.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 48 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 26, 2014

We were hit by a strong thunderstorm overnight but so far the West Branch remains clear and has only risen around 20 cfs at Hale Eddy.  While it’s still rising slowly this morning it should level off soon.  The flows throughout the system have all risen slightly but it seems like a minor event overall that should not change the fishing conditions today.  We should be in the low 50’s today and if the wind stays down we should see some pseudos hatching in the afternoon.  Nymphing has been productive when the wind blows.  Most success has come on Pheasant Tail and Copper John nymphs that match the small olives in #18 -22.  Cannonsville is at 49% capacity with an inflow on the Upper West Branch of 373 cfs.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 51 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 25, 2014

The wind was definitely a factor yesterday until late afternoon.  Once it settled down it was actually very pleasant out for the end of October and there were a few fish rising to the left over olives.  Today looks much better on paper with winds at 5 mph and gusts to 8 mph.  The air temperature should be around 60 with mostly sun.  We should see decent Pseudo hatches mid afternoon plus the odd left over Isonychia.  We have been seeing a lot of caddis in the evenings.  They are mostly flying but occasionally one hits the water while laying eggs  and the fish get a chance to eat. If you see a slashing one timer try putting a #16 dark caddis over it.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 24, 2014

Yesterdays rain did add a little water to the system but all the rivers remain wadeable and in decent shape this morning.  It looks like the flows at Hale Eddy and Fishs Eddy have leveled off and should be dropping during the day.  The wind made fishing tough yesterday and traffic was light but some people braved it and were rewarded with some fish rising to Pseudos in the afternoon.  The weather looks decent today with highs in the high 50s to low 60s.  Hopefully Accuweather is wrong about the wind today.  We have a bit of a warming trend moving in over the weekend that looks great for the end of October.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 23, 2014

So far we’ve had a little sporadic rain this morning but nothing major and the rivers have come through it just fine.  We should see brief showers during the day with highs close to 50 degrees.  The wind was not s bad as predicted yesterday so lets hope it stays down today too.  We are seeing more pseudos hatching than other insects so make sure you have them covered in #22 – #26.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 22, 2014

We had some rain overnight but so far the flows have only seen a slight bump up since yesterday.  Most people reported fewer olives yesterday than the previous few days but there still were enough to get some fish eating on the West Branch in the late afternoon.  Today we are looking at temps in the low 50’s with some intermittent rain so hopefully the hatching comes a little earlier today.  There have been a few fish eating sporadically already this morning likely on a mix of left over olives from yesterday and a few caddis that found there way on to the water.  If the wind stays down this could be a decent day for late October.  The West Branch under the 191 Bridge in Hancock is 52 degrees this morning.
