Delaware River Report: May 29, 2023

Today will be another bright sunny day that makes it feel like August. There are some caddis and a few mayflies during the day but nymphing early has been the best option. The hatching picks up in the evening as the sun drops. Tan caddis are the most common insect we’ve seen during the day. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and a few Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). Keep an eye on the water temps. The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked close to or above 70 degrees yesterday,

Today will be hot again hitting 84 degrees with what Wunderground describes as “A good deal of sunshine”. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Yesterday was tough in the bright sun and low water but people did find fish. It’s fishing a lot like Summer with caddis and some mayflies during the day and the majority of mayflies coming more in the evening, Patience is the key early. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and a few Green Drakes are hatching. Tan caddis are showing in good numbers still during the day. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). Today looks like it will be very similar to yesterday so it should fish the same.

Today will even warmer hitting 84 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be light and variable. Keep an eye on the water temps on the usual spots. The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked at 66 degrees yesterday,

Today should be the lightest wing day we’ve seen in quite a while. We’ll have bright sun but at least we’ll have no wind. Sulphurs and Light Cahills, March Browns, and cornutas are hatching – plus we’re seeing the odd Green Drake on the water. Tan caddis are showing in good numbers still during the day. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). Plus the #16 Hendrickson spinners are still on the the Upper West. It’s the time of year to carry a lot of different flies and be ready for just about anything. Especially in the evening as the sun and wind drop.

Today will even warmer hitting 78 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be light and variable.

We’re coming off another cool night so it will a little bit for the water temps to begin to climb today. The sun is already bright but the wind should be half of what we dealt with yesterday. We’re finding fish on caddis mixed with with a few olives during the day. People are reporting some cornutas on the water along with a few Green Drakes. The #16 Hendricksons spinners are still hanging on the West Branch which is kind of crazy and awesome. The Sulphurs and Light Cahills are definitely picking up and will become more important each day. March Browns are hatching sporadically offering some big bug action if you’re lucky, It’s the time of year to carry a lot of different flies and be ready for just about anything. Especially in the evening as the sun and wind drop.

Today will 70 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

There were decent bugs and a stiff wind yesterday. Despite the wind people found fish willing to eat. Caddis were sporadic mid day offering some shots. We’re still seeing a few Hendrickson spinners in the evening on sections of the West Branch. Cahills, sulphurs, march Browns, and Gray Fox are picking up. A few Green Drakes have been spotted this week so have the big flies ready just in case.

Today will be cooler peaking at 65 degrees. We’ll see mostly sunshine with a few clouds. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

There is no real change to the river flows this morning compared to yesterday. The Beaverkill flow dropped slightly bringing down the East Branch low a few cfs but it shouldn’t be noticeable on the water. We’re finding caddis early with mayflies coming a little later in the afternoon. Each river is fishing a little different except for the caddis. We’re seeing more March Browns / Gray Fox on the Mainstem but they are staring to show on the West along with Sulpurs. Cahills are also out on some sections. The #16 Hendricksons are on their way on the way out and you’re more likely to be fishing spinners.

Today will be sunny hitting 76 degrees again. Sunshine early with clouds rolling in and a chance of afternoon showers. The rainfall total should be negligible at .07″. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North.

The water levels are the same as yesterday and the weather looks similar. Overall people had a decent day with caddis early and different mayflies depending in what river section they were on. We’re seeing more March Browns / Gray Fox on the Mainstem but they are staring to show on the West along with Sulpurs. Cahills are also out on some sections. The #16 Hendricksons are on their way on the way out but we are still seeing a few and fish are eating them. The spinners have been way more important than the duns this week.

Today will be sunny hitting 76 degrees. We may see a few clouds. wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The wind made fishng tough during the day but dropped towards evening. We’re still seeing the odd #16 Hendrickson duns on the West Branch. The spinners are definitely more inportant at this point. We are seeing Light Cahills, sulphurs, some March Browns / Gray Fox, and olives working their way up the system. You’ll find more of those bugs on the Mainstem and East Branch but they are popping here and there on the West. We’ll shift totally towards those over the next few days. Caddis are still offering decent daytime shots if you’re patient and the wind is down.

We’ll hit 75 degrees today with sunshine and a few clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. Wunderground is calling for a slight chance of a stray rain shower or thunderstorm but that seems unlikely.

The rain soaked into the ground adding nothing to the river flows. The release from Canoonsville was bumped slightly to 450 cfs. We’re seeing some left over #16 Hendricksonsin the colder river sections but they are coming to an end. The spinners are still offering some fishing in the evening. Caddis have offered the most daytime shots at rising fish. We are seeing Light Cahills, sulphurs, some March Browns / Gray Fox, and olives working their way up the system.

We have clouds this morning but they should burn off leaving us with sunshine this afternoon. We’ll be warmer hitting 73 degrees with wind 10 – 20 mph from the North.

The river flows throughout the system are basically the same as yesterday morning. The hatching should also be similar but maybe a little earlier in the day due to the cloud cover and potential light rain. Waning #16 Hendricksons are still around but we definitely saw fewer yesterday than previous days. The spinners are definitely still in play. Caddis have been great at times offering some daytime shots at rising fish. We are seeing Light Cahills, sulphurs, some March Browns / Gray Fox, and olives.

Today should be the first rain we’ve seen in a week. The total forecasted rainfall is only 1/4″ so it will be negligible. The cloud cover will be nice to see. the air temp will hit 69 degrees with wind 10 – 15 mph from the South.

The wind was rough yesterday but some people found fish eating on top. Nymphing was okay early but by mid afternoon there were some small hendricksons and caddis on the water. It surprised everyone. The lower river sections are seeing some March Browns, Gray fox, Light Cahills, and a few Sulphurs are starting. We’re coming off a very cold night so it may take a bit for the water temps to climb today.

It will hit 66 degrees today with sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. That will feel like nothing after yesterday.
