Delaware River Report / Conditions July 9, 2019

Today is going to be very similar to yesterday.  Sunshine, low 80’s, and light wind.  Mid day look to the colder water for the best hatching of sulphurs, olives, and a few isonychias.  In the evening we should see hatches on the lower stretches of sulphurs, cahills, isonychias, and olives.  We’ve seen some golden drakes around too.  We’re coming off another cool night but the water temps are starting off the same as they did yesterday.  There has been some activity in the mornings with caddis and some olive spinners.  The hatching on the lower West has been going into the dark so don’t leave the river too early.

Hale Eddy stayed in the 50's this week.

Hale Eddy stayed in the 50’s the last couple of days

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville are all starting off today too hot to fish for trout.  If you’re fishing for trout give those areas a break and fish in the cold water closer to the dams or the headwaters of the freestone rivers.

We had decent sulphurs hatching yesterday with some isonychias and cahills mixed in.  There are some golden drakes around too.  The risers were tough in the sunshine but they were theyre if you were patient.  A lot of small fish are showing which is great to see but the big fish are still eating too.  The clouds rolled in right around dark and are still out there this morning.  They’ll give way to more sun in the next few hours and we’ll hit 80 degrees today.  Wind will be 5 mph from the North.  Last night was in the 50’s and tonight’s air temp should drop back down there again.

Most of the thunderstorms missed us yesterday so the flows this morning haven’t changed much.  We has a couple of periods of cloud cover and light rain but the storms slid north and south of us.  Look to the coldest water to find daytime sulphurs mixed with a few isonychias and olives.  In th evening we should see cahills and caddis in the mix.  If you’re up early look for spinners and caddis before the sun hits the water.  Mid day it may be best to nymph, swing wets, or blind cast isonychias in the riffles.  Today will be 80 degrees, sunny, with wind from the north 5 – 10 mph.  The best news is the night time temps will drop back into the 50’s for the next few days.

The release from Cannonsville was bumped slightly yesterday but looks like it is dropping back already this morning.  The current release is 600 cfs until further notice. We didn’t get the thunderstorms yesterday, just a mix of clouds and sun.  Today we have an 80% chance of afternoon storms but the predicted precip. total has been dropped to 1/4″.  If Wunderground is correct we should have good cloud cover by lunch.  The mid day sulphurs are hatching on the tailwaters and you will find some isonychias and cahills mixed in.  Caddis and spinners have been active in the morning.  Swinging wet flies and nymphing should work well until the hatching picks up inn the afternoon.

It was hot and sunny on the river yesterday. There were fish to be found even midday in the shade and the cooler water near the dams. Evening fishing is still a good choice to get out of the heat. We have a few thunderstorms in the forecast today and slightly cooler temperatures projected after Saturday. If you’re fishing for trout, check the water temperature before you fish. Bring your summer mix of sulphurs, cahills, isonychias with you. Don’t forget a small olive and caddis pattern as well.

Happy Independence Day!

Yesterday was tough in the heat and sun but the bugs were hatching.  The bigger fish were a bit shy until the sun dropped a bit in the evening. Sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias in the evening.  Stick to the shaded areas during day if you’re looking for rising fish. Nymphing and swinging wets have been putting some fish in the net too.  Today’s weather looks a lot like yesterday.  Hot with bright sun.  Wind from the south 5 – 10 mph.  We have some rain moving in tomorrow and Saturday that should bring us some relief.  Stick to the tailwaters or headwaters today.  Water temps will be best closer to the dams.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, the East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday and will go higher today.

It took the bugs a while to get going yesterday but once they started it went almost till dark.   Sulphurs and small, light olives were out in a good numbers with some isonychias and cahills mixed in.  Pseudos and pseudo spinners were in the mix too.  The fog moving in and out kept things interesting but there were fish eating.  Nymphing was effective earlier in the afternoon.  We’re in for more sun today with the air temp hitting the low 80’s.  Wind light and variable.  Look for fish eating in the shade early and fish the cold water.  It sounds like a day with good spinner fall potential.

We had sun most of the day but the hatching was decent in the cold water sections of river.  Warmer sections turned on in the evening.  Sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias are still the main food items.  The sulphurs have started the normal afternoon hatching close to the dams.  Nymphing and swinging wets did work earlier in the day.  This morning we have the normal fog over the West Branch but that should burn off ushering in a day much like yesterday.  79 degrees with wind 5 – 10 from the North.  There is a 40% chance of PM thunderstorms but the forecasted rain total is only .04″.  Hopefully those storms bring in good cloud cover a little earlier in the afternoon.  The release from Cannonsville is 549 cfs.  These are the best wading conditions we’ve seen in 10 months.  Floating is still a viable option too.  The East Branch at Fishs Eddy and the Mainstem at Lordville both peaked around 69 degrees yesterday.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls peaked at 70 degrees.  If you’re on  a freestone or far downstream from one of the dams it’s time to check the water temp before you fish.

July 1st and the West Branch at the 191 Bridge is starting off at 56 degrees this morning.  The hatching has been good even during the day- you just have to fish the coldest water.  Sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias are out in decent numbers and there was a good hatch of light blue wing olives mixed in last night.  There are still some caddis out there too.  The wind was not helpful at times but settled down in the evening.  Today will be warmer with the air temp climbing back into the low 80’s with sun.  Wind 5 – 10 from the North.

We had a lot more sun than originally forecasted yesterday.  We watched and heard the thunderstorms track all around us on the lower West but we got through pretty much unscathed.  There were the normal sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias out.  Look for the cold water to find day time hatching.  Today we should see a few clouds with a cooler air temp hitting the low 70’s.  The wind will pick up in the afternoon and be 10 -15 from the North.  The rivers are in great shape for wading and floating.  Hopefully the cooler weather and cloud cover keeps the water temps in check on the freestones and lower river sections.

Today we are getting a break from the sun.  We’ll have some storms moving through but the forecasted rain total is only .32 for the day.  The release from Cannonsville has been dropped again and is  619 cfs this morning.  The release from Pepacton has also been decreased and the flow at Downsville is 487 cfs.  The system is now at a good level for wading and floating. It seems like a long time since we’ve been able to wade system wide.  Sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias are making up most of the bugs we’re seeing.  There are some caddis mixed in and if you’re close to the dams have your green drake and green drake spinners with you.  If you’re fishing the freestones or Mainstem check the temp with your thermometer before you get in the water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 28, 2019

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped to 741  cfs opening up even more wade opportunities on the West Branch.  The level is still good for floating so we’re getting lose to having the best of both worlds.  We had bright sun yesterday but there were enough bugs to get some fish looking up early.  The sulphurs and cahills hatched in the early evening with the sulphurs making up the bulk of the food.  We’re in for another bright, hot day so find the shade.  Nymphing and swinging wets should produce early.  We’re also in the great part of the season when blind casting isonychias in the riffles can really pay off.  The air temp will cool down a little as some thunderstorms move through.  We should only see 1/4″ of rain so things are looking good for the weekend.
