Delaware River Report: April 8, 2024

The warming trend continues and today looks like an absolutely beautiful day to be on the water. Warm and no wind. Yesterday was tough early in the wind but once the wind dropped a bit and the sun popped out the bugs go more active. Little black caddis, stoneflies, olives, and some blue quills were on the water. The water temps bumped up yesterday and should again today. That will push the hatches. The big rivers are still too high to wade but are fine for floating. The Beaverkill dropped below 1,000 cfs so there are decent wade opportunities there and on the Willowemcoc.

Today will be 62 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the West.

Delaware River Report: April 7, 2024

It looks like we’re out of the cold snap and will have great air temperatures this week, including a few days pushing 70 degrees. The river flows leveled out but remain high. Both Cannonsville and Pepacton are spilling. The sill should drop over the next few days barring any additional rain. The feeder stream flows are falling slowly. Floating is the option on the larger rivers. If you’re wading stick to the small feeder streams. The Beaverkill is flowing around 1,000 cfs at Cooks Falls so there will be some opportunities closer to Roscoe and on the Willowemoc. The warmer weather should push the bugs again giving us some dry fly fishing this week. The caddis, stoneflies, and blue wing olives should get active again.

Today will be 54 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report: April 6, 2024

Despite the snow showers this morning we’re on a warming trend. We should be in the 50’s and 60’s for the next week beginning tomorrow. The West Branch at hale Eddy flow dropped slightly overnight as the feeder stream flows dropped. The spill has increased slightly to 322 cfs making the flow at Stilesville bump slightly. Overall that means the West should drop slowly over the next few days. We’re still in good shape for floating. The Beaverkill is running right around 1,000 cfs opening up a few wade opportunities. There will be better wade options on the Willowemoc and other smaller feeders. The wind will be up again so streamers and nymphs will be your best bet. There is always a shot at dry flies this time of year so don’t rule that out entirely. Especially if we get some breaks in the wind.

Today will be 45 degrees with a few snow showers in the morning. Total precip should amount to nothing. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North.

The river flows are still up but are beginning to drop. All the rivers are at decent levels for floating. If we don’t see any significant precip in the next few days some wade opportunities should open up on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc first. Today stick to the headwaters and small creeks again. Cannonsville is spilling 232 cfs. We’re still on a warming trend and should see air temps in the 50’s and 60’s starting Sunday. That should help the dry fly fishing.

Today will be 41 degrees with rain showers. Total rainfall should only be .05″. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North.

The flow at Hale Eddy leveled off and is beginning to drop this morning

Delaware River Report: April 4, 2024

We had some rain yesterday that turned into an inch of snow overnight. The air temp will hit 41 today so the snow will be gone. We didn’t get the crazy heavy rains that hit south of us but we got enough to bring the rivers up. We’re still at decent levels for boating but if you were planning on wading stick to the small head water streams for safety. We’re on a warming trend for the rest of the week so things should settle back down. Today looks like a streamer day but you never can rule out a few olives regardless of the weather so bring a dry fly rod just in case.

Today will be 41 degrees with rain showers. Total rainfall should only be .01″. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

A little snow up here in April can almost be expected. It should melt quickly with the warmer air temps

Delaware River Report: April 3, 2024

Yesterday’s rain was light during the day but came down a little heavier overnight. Today is all about the weather. The river flows are up a bit and may rise more if additional rain hits us today. We’re still at fine levels for floating but wading will be best and safest on the smaller tributaries. If you’re on the Beaverkill keep an eye on the flow. It was 888 cfs at 6:30 this morning but may be higher on the next flow update. The 10 day forecast shows increasing air temperatures each day after today. The wind will be up making it a nymph and streamer day.

Today will be 39 degrees with .5″ of rain. Wind will be 20 – 30 mph from the East.

Oquaga Creek in Deposit is 157 cfs this morning. Hopefully any additional rain slides around us

Yesterday took a while to warm up but it turned in to a beautiful afternoon. We did have a little rain overnight but not enough to bump the flows this morning. Hopefully today”s rain slides around us. Starting off with streamers and nymphs has been the best bet in the morning. The olive hatch is getting better everyday and we’re seeing good numbers of them mixed with stoneflies in the afternoons. Wind may be a factor today along with the cooler air temp. so look for protected areas if possible. Cannonsville is only spilling 8 cfs this morning.

Today will be 43 degrees with .5″ of rain. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the East.

Delaware River Report: April 1, 2024

Overall we had a very mild Winter. The hatches seem a bit early and the fish are healthy and looking good. This is a great start to the season. Streamers and nymphs fished all Winter long. So far most of our dry fly fish have been on stoneflies. The blue wing olives are out along with the little black caddis. We’ve seen a few blue quills too but not a fishable hatch yet. The hatches should pick up with the warm weather and dropping flows. Cannonsville was spilling 56 cfs yesterday with a release of 1,499 cfs.

Today will be 54 degrees, cloudy, with a chance of rain. Total rainfall should be .18″. Wind should be negligible.

Our shop will close this Friday 10/20 for the 2023 season. Nothing bad- we just need a little time off. We will reopen April 1st like normal. In the meantime we’ll be back on the blog in November for the limited fly of the week.

The release from Cannonsville is coming back up. It will settle back where we were n Wednesday at 175 cfs. It’s still small olives with a few Isonychias, caddis, and Heptagenia. Some people are finding fish blind casting the Isonychias in the riffles. Otherwise wets and nymphs will be your bets bets early. The wind will be up a bit from yesterday so find some protected spots if you’re looking for risers in the afternoon.

Today will be 64 degrees and partly cloudy. We may see a mix of sun and some light afternoon showers. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the south.

They are dropping the West Branch release to zero for some temporary maintenance. While not ideal this happens just about every year and the release should bump back up in the afternoon. We’d love to see them do these during a good rain event but NYC will do what they do. The river should be fine. The bugs should stay wet and the fish can adjust. There may be some redds but the main spawn hasn’t started yet. The East Branch and Mainstem will have decent water during the event.
