Delaware River Report: October 18, 2023

Our shop will close this Friday 10/20 for the 2023 season. Nothing bad- we just need a little time off. We will reopen April 1st like normal. In the meantime we’ll be back on the blog in November for the limited fly of the week.

We’ll have a bit more sun today but hopefully enough clouds will stick around to push the olives. There should be no wind today for a change. We’re still in that Fall mode of lots of small olives, some Heptagenia, and a few small Isonychias. We are finding rising fish most afternoons. Some days the spinners are dropping early so keep an eye on the water surface to see what;s there if you do find rising fish. Nymphs and wets would be a good bet before the hatches begin.

Today will be 59 degrees and partly cloudy. Wind will be light and variable.

Yesterday was a weird weather day with it changing from light rain to sun seemingly every 15 minutes. We didn’t get enough rain to bump the flows in any noticeable manner so we’re starting off about the same as yesterday. The olives hatched and it was noticeably better during the light rain periods. Keep an eye on the slow foam lines and places where the current tapers out. Keep a few Isonychias, caddis, and heptagenia patterns handy but it’s still mostly olives.

Today will be 58 degrees, cloudy, with a slight chance of rain. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Today looks good with a warmer air temp, cloud cover, and some light rain. Wind will be less than yesterday. It definitely has the olive feel today. The hatches have started between 1 and 2 pm on most days. Keep a few Isonychias, caddis, and heptagenia patterns handy but it’s still mostly olives. We had okay bugs yesterday but the wind make it difficult.

Today will be 56 degrees, cloudy, with a slight chance of rain. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report: October 15, 2023

Yesterday was an all day light, steady rain with no wind. The rivers are fine this morning with a bump of about 50 cfs. We’re still in good shape for wading and floating some stretches. The small olives came in the afternoon and fish were happy. Today looks good. Overcast with maybe a light rain shower so it should be another good olive day, The wind will be up a bit but that’s been pretty normal this fall. Heptagenia, Isonychias, and caddis handy but count on the olives. Nymphs and wets should fish well early with the cloud cover.

Today will be 51 degrees, cloudy, with a slight chance of rain. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

The river levels are good this morning and the forecast isn’t calling for a lot of rain. Today looks good with cloud cover, 1/4″ of rain, and no real wind. The air temp will stay lower than we’ve seen for a bit but that’s a fair trade to have no wind for a change. It definitely feels like a blue wing olive day. Again keep a few Heptagenia, Isonychias, and caddis handy but count on the olives. Nymphs and wets should fish well early with the cloud cover.

Today will be 49 degrees with rain. Total rainfall should be .25″. Wind will be light and variable.

The rivers are in good shape this morning. Flows are still dropping slowly and water temps are starting off about the same as yesterday. We should see the afternoon olive hatch again. Plus a few Heptagenia, Isonychias, and caddis. We’ll have a bit more wind today than the last few days but the olives should still hatch. Look for wind protected areas if it stays steady. Nymphing or swinging wets early would be a good bet. Stay below Hale Eddy due to the algae still.

Today will be 58 degrees with sunshine and a few afternoon clouds. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Today should be a lot like yesterday which bodes well for the fishing. The afternoon olive hatches have been really consistent and the fish are happy. There are still some Heptagenia, Isonychia, and caddis around but yesterday was olives again. They hatches are starting sometime between 1 and 3. Nymphing and swinging wets is a good way to start the day. Streamers should be good really early before the sun hits the water.

Today will be 65 degrees with a partly cloudy sky. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the West.

The olives have been pretty consistent in the afternoon offering some decent dry fly fishing. Nymphing is your best bet early but by 3 pm we’ve been finding risers. The West Branch flow is still a bit low but it is steady. The Lower East Branch and Mainstem have dropped a bit- another day or two should put them in good shape. The Beaverkill has dropped a bit more and has more wade opportunities today. Along with the olives have a couple Heptagenia, Isonychias, and caddis handy. But it’s really been the olives.

Today will be 62 degrees with a partly cloudy sky. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The flows continue to drop as the runoff subsides. The West Branch and Upper East Branch are in great shape for wading. The Beaverkill flow dropped below 1,000 cfs at Cooks Falls opening up some additional wade opportunities. The wind will be half of what we’ve been dealing with so today should be a good day on the water. The small olives have been pretty consistent in the afternoons. We’re also still seeing some Heptagenia, Isonychias, and caddis but the olives have been the answer lately.

Today will be 59 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The West Branch dropped slightly and is still low but perfect for wading. The Lower East Branch and Beaverkill are still high and need to drop a bit more. The Upper East is in good shape at just over 500 cfs at Harvard. Water temps are great so here are some good options today. The wind might kick up at times but it should be less than yesterday. Yesterday was tough with the wind but people landed some fish including some on dry flies. The olive hatches have been good lately. It’s 40 degrees this morning so it will take a bit of time for the rivers to warm up. Nymphs and wet flies should work well before the hatches. Streamers should be good before the sun hits the water.

Today will be 55 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: October 8, 2023

Yesterday’s storms spared the West Branch but hit the eastern drainage pretty hard. The West Branch is in fine shape this morning with a flow of 400 cfs at Hale Eddy. Oquaga Creek is only 56 cfs so we should stay in good shape. We had really strong tiny olive hatches yesterday afternoon. Today could be similar with the cloud cover. Just hide from the wind. The Beaverkill and lower East Branch will need a couple of days for the flows to drop. There is a lot of water in those two rivers. The flow at Harvard is 500 cfs and dropping so there are some opportunities above the junction with the Beaverkill.

Today will be 55 degrees with cloudy skies. There is a slight chance of a rain shower but the total rainfall should be negligible. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the West.
