Delaware River Report: August 19, 2023
The river flows have dropped quite a bit but remain high. Floating is not a problem but the only wading opportunities will be near the dams above most of the feeder streams. The West Branch at Hale Eddy is 2,000 cfs and dropping slowly. It is still off color but definitely looks good for streamer fishing from a boat. There was some mud coming in Farm Pool yesterday above Oquaga but that should be clear and hat stretch looks fine for wading. That area is your best shot for small sulphur and olive dry fly fishing today.
Today will be 74 degrees with a mic of sun and clouds. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

We were hit hard with a thunderstorm early this morning and the flow at Hale eddy is 6,990 cfs and definitely off color. The river is unsafe below Oquaga. We’ll regroup tomorrow morning. Oquaga Creek peaked at 3,000 cfs and is beginning to drop but it will take a while for the West Branch to come down. The only shot today is above Oquaga close to the dam.
Today will be 73 degrees with thunderstorms giving way to partly cloudy skies. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the West.

Delaware River Report: August 17, 2023
The river flows are dropping but there is still a lot of water coming in from the feeders. The West Branch at Hale Eddy is just over 1,000 cfs so there are some wade opportunities opening up on the lower West. We should see sunshine this afternoon so for dry fly fishing stick to the normal Summer program and fish the coldest water closest to the dams with small sulphurs and olives. The lower West is in good shape for nymphing and wet flies. Streamers could be a good move in low light.
Today will be 80 degrees with partly cloudy skies in the morning clearing in the afternoon. There is a slight chance of a rain shower. Wind will be 5 = 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: August 16, 2023
The West Branch low at Eddy has dropped back to 1,500 cfs. Still high for decent wading but fine for floating. The color has improved a lot and is fishable. The best wade opportunity (and dry fly fishing) will be above Oquaga Creek again today. It will be 560 cfs and clear up there. Yesterday fished well with streamers in the afternoon. It took a while for the clarity to improve enough to get the fish moving. Today looks much better from the start. The rivers should continue to drop with no significant rain in the 10 day forecast.
Today will be 78 degrees with partly cloudy skies. There is a slight chance of a rainstorm. Wind will be light and variable.

We were hit with some rain overnight into this morning. The West Branch above Oquaga Creek looks okay on the graphs this morning with a slight bump to 579 cfs. The should be okay for midday sulphurs and olives. The West Branch at hale Eddy is 2,700. The lower West, East Branch, and Mainstem are all high, still climbing, and off color. Keep an eye on the gauges for the latest flows.
Today will be 73 degrees with cloudy skies and another .05″ of rain. We may see some additional thunderstorms so watch the radar. Wind will be light and variable.

The river flows have dropped back enough to offer good wade and float opportunities. The West Branch looks good this morning with decent clarity. The lower East and Mainstem still have some color. Not much has changed with the hatching. Go to the coldest water closest to the dams for daytime sulphurs and olives. It’s time to have a few flying ants in your box too just in case. The lower West may have a few afternoon olives if the clouds stick around but the best bet will be nymphs or wet flies during the day.
Today will be 80 degrees with a mic of clouds and sun. We should see more clouds in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Some of the storm hit us yesterday and all of the river flows are up. The West Branch is 1,160 cfs at hale Eddy with about a foot of visibility in Homepool. The flow is dropping already this morning. The river above Oquaga Creek is fine for wading at 564 cfs and should be clear. Small sulphurs and olives. The lower West looks decent for streamer fishing.
Yesterday was our annual Get Trashed cleanup event. We can’t thank the volunteers and sponsors enough. 80 tires, a load of scrap metal, and a dumpster full of garbage is out of the river. It will be the same weekend in 2024

Keep an eye on the radar this afternoon. We may see some strong storms push through. The sun popped out yesterday afternoon and the river fished like normal for Summer. The coldest water closest to the dams have the best daytime dry fly action. We are seeing some midday bugs again on the mid West Branch – especially when it’s cloudy. Today looks good for olives and we should see a few Isonychias.

We found some olives on the lower West Yesterday afternoon so the cooler weather and light rain conditions are helping. It wasn’t a major hatch but it was great to see. The best daytime dry flyfishing is still going to be in the coldest water closest to the dams. We’re sill fishing small sulphurs and olives. We should have sunshine today so the better dry fly move is to stay high. If you’re nymphing stick below Hale Eddy to avoid the algae.

Today looks like a good day to be on the water. We should have cloud cover and some light afternoon rain. The flows have continued to drop opening up more wade opportunities. It looks like a decent blue wing olive day. The best day time dry fly fishing will still be up close to the dams in the coldest water. Small sulphurs and olives. The weather may push some olives and Isonychias earlier in the day on the mid to lower West. The cloud cover should certainly make the fish more comfortable to eat Isonychias blind casted in the riffles.

UPDATE: We got a report that the East Branch is blown out. The West Branch is also running muddy. Stick to the water closest to the dams for dry fly fishing.
The aqueduct work has been pushed off until Fall of 2024.
Some thunderstorms hit us and all of the river flows are up this morning. The West Branch at Hale Eddy is flowing 1,400 cfs but is dropping. Streamers could be productive in the high water this afternoon. If you’re wading or want dry fly fishing stay above Oquaga Creek. The flow is 500 cfs, clear, and will have the afternoon sulphurs and olives.
Next weekend is our annual Get Trashed cleanup event. Join us for a great time removing trash from the river system.
