River Report / Conditions April 9, 2011
Bright sun and no fog today – hopefully getting to 60F today! It looks like Cannonsville is spilling a little bit, cooling off the upper West Branch – releases should mitigate the amount of spill and warm up the water a little bit, as will the warmer weather heading our way. The exciting news is that the Paraleps (Blue Quill) are out, and there were some good numbers on the West Branch yesterday, but still not many fish looking up for them due to the water temps. We are still seeing Chimmarra caddis and little black stones, but the Baetis vagans are still absent – let’s hope that changes! Here are your flows:

Overcast this morning with the temperature just above freezing – hopefully getting to 60F today! Cloudy this morning, but it is supposedly going to burn off – we will see what happens! The flows dropped pretty dramatically last night with the precipitation moving out of the area. Warm weather over the next few days should help get water temps up, and help get the bugs hatching! The clouds have left, and the sun is shining in Starlight! AFter a BIG jump in flow yesterday due to all the rain, the river has cleared, and is looking great! Warm weather over the next few days should help get water temps up, and help get the bugs hatching! We have had over an inch of rain during the last 36 hours, and the already-saturated hills have filled the river once again – hopefully we will drop by the weekend! As for bugs, we have reports still of little black stoneflies, and some Chimarra caddis flying around.

Although the weathermen have promised 60 degree weather, we sit here in Starlight with overcast skies, high-humidity, and 48 degree temperatures – still a bit cooler than we’d like. As for bugs, we have reports still of little black stoneflies, and some Chimarra caddis flying around, and a few mentions of rising fish in and around Stockport, which will hopefully catch on throughout the system!

Bright sun at the shop this morning, hopefully it will help warm the water up a little bit. We are expecting rain tonight, up to 1.8 inches – it could make Cannonsville spill, which means more alewives in the river! As for bugs, we have reports still of little black stoneflies, and some Chimmara caddis flying around. As temps increase, we expect to see more of those along with our first mayflies of the year!

Good morning! The snow predicted for the last few days never materialized, but rain and cloudy weather did. The rivers came up a little bit, barely perceptible out the window here at the DRC. Little black stoneflies are still kicking around, and if the water temps come up, we will hopefully start seeing some Baetis vagans (little blue wing olives) kicking around! Open for the Season!
Happy April Fool’s! We are officially open for the season here at the DRC, and mother nature has decided to play a little gag on us, dropping yet more snow here in Starlight. We only have a dusting for now, with a bit more to come. Give us a call if you are feeling that urge to get on the water – the weather might not cooperate, but we can still at least TALK fishing!

Insect / Fish Activity:
We are seeing little black stoneflies coming off in droves – with the low water temps the trout are a bit sluggish, but we are seeing some rises in Home Pool.

Only 1 Week Until We Open!
We are getting close, only 7 days until we open the doors on the 2011 season! Old Man Winter hasn’t exactly given up, however, with a new 5″ falling here yesterday with another storm on the horizon. Let’s just hope there is enough snowpack to keep Cannonsville spilling well into May! Full, daily river reports will begin again in earnest starting April 1!
As for flows, the river is still high as a result of melt and spillage. The Hale Eddy gauge seems a bit low compared to what we are seeing out in front of the shop – but we have a good number 0f feeders between the club and the gauge. We are slowly dropping, but this recent precipitation might see another bump.

Winter Fishing
Daily River Reports will begin on April 1, 2011. Please check the links below for up to date flow and temperature information. Nymphing slow pools and drop offs or fishing streamers slow will be your best bet for winter fishing, there is a possibility of some surface activities on warm afternoons in some of the bigger pools.
