Delaware River Report: August 7, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off until Fall of 2024.

We were hit with some rain overnight and the flows are increasing from runoff. The Oquaga Creek flow is 189 cfs and climbinb so the West Branch will be rising until that begins to drop. Click on the gauge links below for the latest flow information. The flow at Stilesville bumped slightly to 521 cfs but that should remain in decent shape today. Fishing above Oquaga is your best bet for daytime dry fly activity.

Next weekend is our annual Get Trashed cleanup event. Join us for a great time removing trash from the river system. Check out the video to see what it’s all about.

Today will be 77 degrees with clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South. Wunderground is predicting some afternoon thunderstorms with more wind and somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2″ of additional rain..

Delaware River Report: August 6, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off until Fall of 2024.

There was some brief showers on the eastern part of the system but the West Branch remains the same flow. Today will be warm so seek out the coolest water close to the dams. Midday hatches of small sulphurs and olives will be in that colder water.

Delaware River Report: August 5, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

We had a few afternoon thunderstorms roll through but the West Branch looks fine this morning and only bumped 100 cfs at Hale Eddy. That leaves us in good condition for both floating and wading. Blind casting Isonychias in the riffles has improved with the cloud cover. If the sun pops out nymphing or swinging wets will be better bets until the sun drops in the evening. Midday hatches of small sulphur and olives are still happening in the coldest water sections. Stay as high as you can on the system to find the better daytime bugs.

Today will be 78 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

Yesterday’s thunderstorms completely missed us. We never even saw the wind pick up. So the rivers are starting off about the same as yesterday. So it’s the same program. Look for the midday sulphurs and olives in the coldest water. If you’re nymphing or willing to take a chance the rain will push some bugs try the lower West. If we do get the rain we’ll probably see some thick fog in spots. Hopefully there will be enough wind to push it out.

Today will be 75 degrees with cloud cover this morning and a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. Potential rainfall is around .5″.

Delaware River Report: August 3, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

Looking at the hourly forecast we should have sun until mid afternoon. So sticking with the normal summer program makes the most sense. Small sulphurs and olives should hatch midday in the coldest sections. There is still algae in the upper river so nymphing is better below Hale Eddy. If we do get some rain we may see some olives and Isonychias on the lower West. Otherwise blind casting the riffles o swinging wet flies would be good options.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville temperatures all peaked in the high 60’s. Please check them with thermometer before fishing.

Today will be 79 degrees with sunshine and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. We may see some stronger gusts depending on how the storms track.

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

The cool weather has helped dropped the water temps on most of the rivers. The day time hatching will still be best in the coldest water near the dams but the cooler water should improve the hatching on the other sections. While it’s mostly been small sulphurs and olives keep on the look out for ants and other terrestrials. Blind casting Isonychias and light cahills should also work better with the cooler water.

The river flows have dropped a bit more along with the water temps. Yesterday’s thunderstorms slid around us and the West Branch looks good this morning. Stick with the same program for now. Midday sulphurs and olives near the dams is the best bet for dry fly fishing during the day. There is still some algae up high so nymphing will be better mid to lower West Branch. Now that the flow has dropped blind casting Isonychias in the riffles (with or without a dropper) can be very effective.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, East Branch at Fishs Eddy, and Mainstem at Lordville temperatures have dropped a bit with the colder air temps. Please check them with thermometer before fishing.

Today will be cooler again hitting 72 degrees with mostly sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report: July 31, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

The West Branch is flow is dropping back to normal levels and the clarity is good this morning. Hale Eddy is 900 cfs so there are more wade opportunities. So back to normal July conditions. The best shot at daytime dry fly activity will be closer to the dams in the coldest water. Small sulphurs and olives. The lower West will be better for nymphing and streamers because there is less algae on those stretches. The cooler air temps have helped drop the water temps. That may push the hatches on the lower West a little earlier in the evening compared to what we have been seeing.

Delaware River Report: July 30, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

Deposit was hit with quite a bit of rain yesterday and Oquaga Creek is blown out. Oquaga peaked at 2,000 cfs but is now dropping back. The West Branch at Hale Eddy flow has already fallen to 1,400 cfs but it is off color. The best bet today is to fish above Oquaga. The flows didn’t bump much above the creek and the river should be in fine shap. Small sulphurs and olives. The lower West may clear enough to be decent for streamers this afternoon.

We have cloud cover this morning with a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. The wind doesn’t look bad at 5 – 10 mph but we may see some higher gusts. That could keep the fog off the water in Deposit so today the wind may help. Dry fly fishing is still small sulphurs and olives close to the dams in the coldest water. Below Hale Eddy is mostly nymphing or swinging wet flies. Streamers could be a good option if we get the rain.

We had a few storms pass through yesterday but Homepool is clear and looking good this morning. The flow at Hale Eddy is 970 and falling so wading and floating are options. Even with the higher flow the best bet for daytime sulphurs and olives will be in the coldest water near the dams. Again there is algae up there so nymphing and streamer fishing will be best below Hale Eddy.

Delaware River Report: July 27, 2023

The aqueduct work has been pushed off again. It is now scheduled for Fall of 2024.

The release from Cannonsville was bumped slightly and looks like 550 cfs. Not a huge change and we’re still in good shape for floating and wading. It was not increased for a flow target so it’s likely a thermal bump to “protect” the Mainstem. The fishing won’t change with an extra 50 cfs so normal July rules apply. The best dry fly fishing will be in the coldest river sections with midday sulphurs and olives. The algae is still there so if you want to nymph move below Hale Eddy. The lower West hatching is towards dark and into dark. Blind casting Isonychias and cahills in the riffles may work during the day.
