Delaware River Report / Conditions May 20, 2011

Here we go again – the torrential rains last night and this morning have brought the West Branch up over 3,000 cfs this morning. It appears to have crested, and on the way down. Clarity is an issue, and the river is definitely UNSAFE for wading of any kind. The levels will continue to drop, and we will get back to fishable levels soon.

Delaware River Conditions / Report May 19, 2011

Apologies on the late update – ’twas a bit crazy getting the guides on the water today! The rain yesterday was quite torrential in places, evident in the HUGE surge of water in the Beaverkill/East Branch system. This has raised both to un-wadable levels, and also muddied up the Main Stem a bit. Fortunately, the West Branch only saw a small bump, and should continue to fish well, as it has for the past week. Walton had a big spike, so we anticipate the West Branch rising a bit more (600 cfs) after the “wave” comes over top of the dam, sometime tonight. This water should be gin-clear, so fishing will not be greatly affected.

We still have Hendricksons on the West Branch- lots of fish rising yesterday afternoon.  So far most of the predicted rain has missed us leaving the rivers in great shape.  There are a few March Browns coming off, with some fish eating them once in a while.  Caddis have been great in the morning.

The wet, misty weather continues, and the bugs(and fish!) are taking full advanatge of these optimal hatching conditions! The West Branch fished exceptionally well yesterday, with the only snag being that the fish are extra spooky, due to the pressure they have been under – make that first cast count! Hendricksons are still hatching, and some March Browns have been reported on the Main Stem – we will let you know when the are in full swing. Otherwise, be ready for a spinner fall anytime during the day, as well as hatching and egg-laying caddis.

What a day yesterday! Spinners were falling at various times in the afternoon, hendricksons were still hatching on the West Branch, and the caddis were out, yeilding splashy rises from fish in and out of the riffles! Today is a carbon-copy day weather-wise, so we are hoping (fingers are crossed here) to have a similar day today. Give us a call if you have any questions or to book your trip!

The pressure change yesterday hampered the fishing a little bit, but there are still plenty of bugs out and about, and with the weather ‘stabilizing,’ today has the potential to be an fantastic day on the water! The shop door was covered with Hendrickson spinners, paralep spinners, baetis duns, and all the fun caddis we have been seeing for the last week. Spring is still here!

The clouds had the desired effect – bugs, bugs, and more bugs! Fish were up and rising throughout the system, with lots of big boys (and girls) caught! Towards the end of the day the fish picked up the degree of difficulty by feeding on spinners for 10 minutes, then caddis for another 10, and duns after that. Just the type of fun we enjoy!

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 13,2011

Friday the 13th is lucky again! Clouds and rain have moved into the area, which should help keep the river levels up, temperatures down, and the bugs VERY happy! This has the potential to be the best weekend of the season thus far! Aside from a bit of a fiberglass hatch on the West Branch, the river has still be fishing well, even in the bright sunlight we experienced over the last few days. This influx of cooler, cloudier weather can be nothing but good!! On the shop this morning we had parlep spinners, hendrickson spinners, apple green caddis, and tan caddis – always a good sign!

Delaware River Conditions / Update 5/12/2011

Wading is now a possibility on some sections of the system.  The forecast is calling for a high of 76 with sun today.  Look for risers in the shade during the day and most of the top water action towards evening well into dark.  Nymphing or swinging wets in the riffles should produce some fish during the day.

Fishing was great yesterday, with lots of fish on top eating a mix of Hendricksons and Caddis.  Hatches are starting mid day, and streamer fishing has been good in the morning.  The system is dropping back to normal levels, and wading is finally becoming an option in some areas.  Lots of sun today, with a little cloud cover and rain coming in over the weekend.

Two days of beautiful weather, and the fish certainly are responding! We’ve had great action both on streamers and on dries, as good hatches of Hendricksons keep coming off! Reports from the West and Main are equally good – the water is great no matter where you are fishing!
