Upper Delaware River Report — July 10, 2010

At some point during the night, we finally got the rain that the weather man told us was coming.  Air temperatures are cooler this morning and will be throughout the day, with a high of only 75 degrees expected for today.  We will see overcast skies for most of the day, with a very good chance of rain as well.  Unfortunately, the cold-water release rate from Cannonsville is down to 325 this morning, which will make the river difficult to float.  Like usual, water temperatures on the Upper West will remain cool, so that will be the place to be during the day.  Look for Olives, Sulphurs, Isos and Caddis out on the water.  If you make it out early enough in the morning, you could get some Tricos in the mix.

Upper Delaware River Report — July 9, 2010

These next two days should give us exactly what we have been hoping for—rain and a break from scorching temperatures.  While today’s high is still 85 degrees, we are happy to get out of the 90 degree range that we had been in.  Right now there is great cloud cover, and the forecast says we should have thunderstorms just after noon and through the night.  Tomorrow, those storms will turn to showers throughout the entire day, and there should be a considerable drop in temperature, with tomorrow’s high only reaching 74 degrees.  This should make for a good weekend to fish, and some cooler temperatures should lead to more bug activity on the water.  If the clouds are out, look for Olives, in addition to Sulphurs, Isos and Caddis.  Don’t let the rain deter you, this can be a great opportunity to fish.  Just make sure to bring your rain gear!

Upper Delaware River Report — July 8, 2010

With thunderstorms in the forecast for the next three days, we should get a much needed break from the sweltering summer sun.  Today’s forecast shows some clouds throughout the day with isolated thunderstorms during part of the afternoon.  A nice rain could do wonders for the river and overcast skies should help to cool down temperatures.  Because of the recent heat wave, the most consistent action is going to be on the Upper West Branch, where temperatures have remained consistently cool.  On other parts of the river, look towards the morning and evening hours for more action.

Upper Delaware River Report — July 7,2010

This morning the release from the Cannonsville reservoir is 494 cfs. With flows at this level the West Branch is still looking good and fishing great. The most solid action has still been on the upper West Branch during the day. Towards evening action spreads out over the entire West Branch as spinners start to show. Guys did well yesterday floating the Upper West Branch and were able cover a good amount of water. Fishing from a boat gives you the ability to cover more favorable water during the heat of the day while still floating through excellent pool where large browns like to hold. It looks like the forecast for the next 2 days has overcast skies with a chance of showers, this could cool things down quite a bit and give us a little bit of rain that we desperately need.

Upper Delaware River Report — July 6, 2010

This morning the Cannonsville Reservoir started releasing 523 cfs making our guides excited to continue to float the Upper West.  The extra release has cooled the water down to 47 degrees this morning so if your out wading make sure you dress accordingly.

Today we are expecting another warm day on the Upper Delaware. Air temperatures have been high over the past couple of days but water temperatures on the west branch are still cool. Hale Eddy stayed below 64º all day yesterday.  The best action has still been on the upper half of the West Branch where we continue to see a good amount of insect life throughout the majority of the day. Concentrate on riffles during the hottest parts of the day either nymphing or throwing a big searching pattern such as an Iso. Targets should increase as the day goes on, if you are fishing to a picky fish and have tried most of your dry fly patterns, don’t give up before trying a small caddis or small rusty spinner pattern.

Upper Delaware River Report — July 5, 2010

Looks like another sunny day on the Upper Delaware River System, highs today are to reach low to mid 90’s. With Temperatures like we have been experiencing the last 2-3 days, the West Branch is still providing the best trout fishing opportunities. The West Branch, by far, has the coolest water temps which should produce bugs and it will also give the fish a better chance of surviving the fight. Today is another day where you may want to try nymphing during the heat of the day if there are no bugs or targets. Keep an eye out for caddis and sulphurs during the day today, also make sure that you have a variety of rusty spinners with you and a spent caddis pattern could come in handy too.

Upper Delaware River Report — July 4, 2010

Flows on the West Branch have dropped some since yesterday, after another change in the release rate from Cannonsville Reservoir.  This means that most fishing is once again going to be concentrated to the Upper West Branch, where water temperatures are still very nice and cool.  The high temperatures for the next few days will be in the 90s, with a lot of sun in the forecast for today.  Morning and evening will offer the best chance for fisherman to see bug activity, as well as escape from some of the midday heat.

Hope everyone has a great Fourth of July!

Upper Delaware River Report — July 3, 2010

Today is going to be another sunny day with clear skies and no rain in the forecast.  It should be a beautiful weekend to get out and spend some quality time on the river.  Cannonsville has dropped their release rate down to 520 cfs, which will leave plenty of water to float as well as open up more areas to wade fisherman.  Yesterday’s high release of 817 cfs should have helped to flush out the river and get rid of some of the green slime in the water.  Over the past week, water temperatures have remained nice and cool all across the board.  There has been a lot of bug activity, with a variety of Sulphurs, Olives and Iso’s on the surface.  We should expect to see the same bugs on the water today.

Upper Delaware River Report — July 2, 2010

The fishing has been very good the past couple of days and should only improve with the recent release from Cannonsville Reservoir, which has more than doubled yesterday’s flows on the West Branch.  Despite the high release rate, your best fishing will still be on the Upper West Branch today.  After the water temperatures further downstream start to settle, giving the fish and bugs a chance to adjust, many more opportunities along the Delaware River will open up for anglers and give the crowds a chance to spread out.  Today’s forecast shows that it should be another cool and sunny day with clear skies.  Tomorrow should be much of the same, with some clouds and a slight chance of rain expected in the morning.

This water level is perfect for floating, and doing so with one of our experienced guides will give you your best opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime.  To read more about our guides, view their profiles on our website or contact us if you would like to book a trip.  We hope to see you this holiday weekend!

Upper Delaware River Report — July 1, 2010

Today’s forecast is sunny, and you can expect it to remain that way for at least a few days.  There is not a chance of rain in the forecast until next Tuesday.  Water temperatures are looking good, with both the Main Stem and East Branch becoming fishable again.  The Upper West Branch has been the place to be lately, providing awesome fishing throughout the day.  Reports from yesterday were that there was lots of bug activity, with great Sulphur hatches and good Olives and Isos.  A number of people said they had quality fish to cast to the whole time.  Hopefully yesterday repeats itself and it is another great day on the water.

Upper Delaware River Report — June 30, 2010

Cooler air is here, and it has already taken effect on the water temperatures which are down a couple of degrees all across the board.  Night time lows below 50 degrees should only help to further cool it down.  Today’s forecast shows bright sun all day, with no chance of rain.  However, with the cooler water there should be consistent bug activity throughout most of the day.  Yesterday evening brought a great Sulphur hatch, as well as Olives, Isos and Caddis.  Today should bring much of the same, and should be a good overall day for being out on the water.

Upper Delaware River Report — June 29, 2010

According to the forecast for the rest of the week, we should not have a day with a high above 80 degrees until Saturday.  Hopefully that weather will help keep the water temperatures down a little as we head into July.  Today should be partly cloudy with a very slight chance of rain.  If it gets cloudy, look for Olives on the water.  Otherwise, continue throwing Sulphurs, Caddis and Isos while looking for targets, or try nymphing while the bright sun is out.  We have been able to get good fish the past couple of days, so now is a great time to be on the water.
