Delaware River Report: June 20, 2023
We should have cloud cover today with a slight chance of rain. The rainfall shouldn’t amount to anything but the clouds could push the bugs a little earlier in the day. Small olives, cahills, sulphurs, and Isonychias are making up the bulk of the hatches. Blind casting has worked well before and after the hatches. Wind shouldn’t be a factor again. The conditions look really good today,
The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls and the lower East Branch at Fishs Eddy peaked at or over 70 degrees yesterday. The Mainstem at Lordville peaked at 67 degrees. It’s time to give these rivers a break until they cool down.
Today will be warm again hitting 78 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Yesterday fished well again with small olives. Sulphurs, cahills, and Isonychias are bringing some fish to the net too. We’ve hit the cool time of year when blind casting Isonychias and cahills in the riffles could pay off anytime of the day, We’ll be warmer today with more sun so look for shade banks and riffles early. Wind won’t be a factor for a change. The weather change may push the hatching a little later and longer into the evening than what we’ve seen the last few days.
Today will be warmer hitting 79 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be light and variable.

Yesterday fished well with decent olives and sulphurs in the afternoon. People also found fish blind casting Isonychias in the the riffles. The wind was tough at times but there were pockets of calm and it dropped in the evening. Some river sections had brief rain showers that pushed some bugs but they missed us on the lower West. Today’s weather looks similar. The water temps are starting off a few degrees warmer than yesterday which may push the hatching a little earlier in the day.

The rain bumped the flows slightly but not enough to be noticeable when you’re in the river. The color is fine and everything looks good this morning. It took a while for the water temps to warm up yesterday so the better hatching was in the afternoon. Cahills, olives, and some sulphurs made up the bulk of the food but there is still a wide array of insects out there.

Today looks like a good day to be on the water with cloud cover, light rain, and no wind. That combination could push the olives and sulphurs earlier in the day. It could also make blind casting Isonychias a good mid day option. Yesterday was a mix of clouds and sun with some surface activity in the afternoon. Nymphing was the best bet early
Today will be 68 degrees with light and variable winds. We should have decent cloud cover with some light rain totaling .09″‘

Yesterday was another good rain. It was heavy at times but the ground absorbed most of it and the rivers look fine this morning. We’re running clear. Delaware River Report: June 13, 2023
The rain yesterday was a perfect, steady all afternoon event. Just what we needed. The river flows bumped slightly but most of it soaked in to the ground. A perfect example is the Oquaga Creek flow bumping from 5 cfs to 21 cfs. That would have been much higher if we hadn’t been so dry before the rain. The West Branch is clear out front with a flow of 575 cfs at Hale Eddy. The wind was tough at times yesterday but there were enough breaks to find fish eating. Sulphurs, small olives, and cahills made up most of the bugs we saw.
Today will hit 75 degrees with clouds in the morning breaking to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 -10 mph from the North.

Today is our first shot for rain in quite a while. We should see some precip in the afternoon with most of it coming overnight. There’s always a good chance the storms will slide around us but if we do get the rain most of it should soak into the ground. It will be windy today so find some protected spots to set up in. We had more sun yesterday than we’d hoped for but people found fish on sulphurs and olives. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are still around in some areas. The fish are picky but they are there and rising,

The release from Cannonsville was cut back slightly to 500 cfs. That is still a decent release and is fine for wading and floating. The sun came in and out yesterday afternoon but it wasn’t a bright glaring day. Some people reported sulphurs and cornutas in the afternoon offering some dry fly shots. The cooler nights and overcast sky helped yesterday. There were some sulphurs and cornutas mid afternoon offering some dry fly shots earlier than we’ve seen lately. We’ll start off with cloud cover this morning but should see some sunshine later in the day. The release from Cannonsville was likely done for the Montague Flow Target. The level is still good for wading and floating. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). The release from Cannonsville was bumped slightly but not enough to notice on the water. The hatches came earlier than we’ve been seeing lately with a good mix of bugs. We may have had cloud cover but it was hard to tell through the smoke haze. The cooler nights dropping the water temps certainly helps too.
