Delaware River Report: June 7, 2023
The smoke from the Canadian wildfires is making the air real hazy here for the second day in a row, We’re coming off another cool nights so water temps are a couple degrees colder than yesterday morning. Definitely good to see after the heat we had a week ago. The wind was really rough yesterday but should be less today. Nymphing was the best bet during the day but some people found fish rising. Despite the haziness the hatches still seem to be coming later in the day and evening. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). Pale Evening Duns are beginning to show too.
Today will hit 69 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. Wind will be 10 -15 mph from the North. It’s going to be hazy with the smoke in the air

The river flows and temps are starting off about the same as yesterday morning. The cooler nighttime air temps have helped quite a bit. Nymphing is the best bet during the day but keep an eye out for sporadic risers. The weather looks good today except we’ll have to deal with some wind again. Wunderground is showing a few showers in the area but the total rainfall amount will be negligable. But clouds and any precip would be welcome. The wind made yesterday rough but it did drop a bit in the evening. The smoke from the Canadia forest fires made an odd haze in the late aftenoon. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). Pale Evening Duns are beginning to show too.

The release from Cannonsville was increased slightly to 560 cfs. The micromanaging of the release is due to the Montague Flow Target in the FFMP. The cooler air temps have helped the water temps. The bright sun has pushed a lot of the hatching to later in the afternoon with some people finding a little midday action in spots. Nymphing is the best bet during the day but keep an eye out for sporadic risers. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). The wind has been unkind so try to find some protected areas. The hourly forecast shows the wind dropping in the evening.

We’re starting off with sun and hot temps again today but we should see some clouds roll in this afternoon. Today will be the last day of the heat and bright sun for a bit. The release from Cannonsville was increased slightly to 500 cfs. Nymphing will likely be your best bet in the bright sun until some shade hits some of he banks. Once the sun drops we are seeing a mix of bugs. Sulphurs, Light Cahills, March Browns, cornutas and Green Drakes are hatching. Dark Blue Sedges #14 are out in the evening (Psilotreta sp.). Today should be the lightest wing day we’ve seen in quite a while. We’ll have bright sun but at least we’ll have no wind. We’re coming off another cool night so it will a little bit for the water temps to begin to climb today. The sun is already bright but the wind should be half of what we dealt with yesterday. We’re finding fish on caddis mixed with with a few olives during the day. People are reporting some cornutas on the water along with a few Green Drakes. The #16 Hendricksons spinners are still hanging on the West Branch which is kind of crazy and awesome. The Sulphurs and Light Cahills are definitely picking up and will become more important each day. March Browns are hatching sporadically offering some big bug action if you’re lucky, It’s the time of year to carry a lot of different flies and be ready for just about anything.
