Delaware River Report: May 13, 2023

The river flows have dropped significantly since yesterday. Pepacton has stopped spilling and the East Branch flow at Harvard is 277 cfs. The release from Cannonsville is 600 cfs. The spill is 280 cfs. There are now a lot more wade opportunities throughout the system and the West and Mainstem are still in good shape for floating. We’re still seeing some hendricksons and apple caddis on some river sections. There are a few march browna and light cahills on the warmer river sections. Definitely hendrickson spinners on the West Branch. Apple caddis and tan caddis were offering sme daytime dry fly action for people who found them on the water.

Today will be warm again with the air temp hitting 76 degrees. If Wunderground is to be believed we should see some clouds this morning with more moving in during the afternoon. That’s certainly a welcome change and should help the day time dry fly fishing. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

The release from Cannonsville is steady at 600 cfs. The spill is 557 cfs. The East Branch flow at Harvard is dropped to 500 cfs. Both tailwaters have decent wade opportunities (More on the East Branch but th West Branch is okay in spots). The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in great shape for wading. We’d definitely like to see more clouds but it’s been sunny and warm for quite a few days now. That’s pushed the mayfly hatching later into the evening. During the day look for spots with caddis activity and be patient looking for sporadic risers. Some river sections still have blue quills, apple caddis, and hendricksons. The warmer river sections are seeing sporadic march browns and a few cahills.

Today will be warmer hitting 81 degrees with a mi of clouds and sun. there are a few more clouds this morning than yesterday but count on sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The release from Cannonsville was increased to 600 cfs. The spill is 948 cfs. The East Branch flow at Harvard is dropping and hit 799 cfs. People are finding a few spots to wade on the West Branch and Mainstem and more should open up on the East Branch. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in great shape for wading. We’ve been dealing with bluebird conditions for a few days now. That will generally push the hatches later in to the afternoon. It’s been absolutely great spinner conditions. Hopefully we see some caddis in mid day sun. Hendricksons, apple caddis, and blue quills are around in decent numbers on some river sections, There are March Browns but so far they’ve been spread out like they tend to be.

Today will be warmer hitting 76 degrees. We may (hopefully) see some afternoon clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The rivers have dropped slightly since yesterday morning. Cannonsville is spilling 1,239 cfs with a release of 0 cfs so we just have spill and runoff in the West Branch again this morning. That’s no problem and won’t be noticable on the water. People are finding some spots to wade little on the West Branch and Mainstem. Definitely use caution. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in great shape for wading. We are still seeing decent blue quills mixed with the hendricksons on some sections. There are some march browns hatching sporadically too. Caddis are all over the place so hopefully people find some on the water. The bright sun and warmer water has pushed the hatching back a little later And we’ve had great conditions for the hendrickson spinners.

It’ cool this morning but will heat up to 70 degrees with sunshine. Wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Same situation as yesterday. Cannonsville is spilling 1,357 cfs with a release of 0 cfs so we just have spill and runoff in the West Branch this morning. That’s no problem and won’t be noticable on the water. The tailwaters are still in great shape for floating but remain high for decent wading. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in great shape for wading. Overall everyone did well yesterday with a mix of hendricksons and caddis. The bright sun and warmer temps pushed the bugs a little later and made the hatch a little thinner but it was enough to get some fish going. Definitely have your spinners today!

Today will be slightly cooler hitting 66 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Cannonsville is spilling 1,341 cfs with a release of 0 cfs so we just have spill and runoff in the West Branch this morning. That’s no problem and won’t be noticable on the water. Obviously the West Branch is much lower this morning but it’s still too high to wade. The Beaverkill flow has dropped below 1,000 cfs opening up more wade options there and on the Willowemoc. The rivers fished well again yesterday despite the bright sun in the morning. The couds came in during the afternoon and we saw the normal hatches of hendricksons, blue quills, and caddis. While not always heavy hatches there were enough bugs to get fish looking up. These rivers have fished very well this Spring.

Today will be mostly sun with the air temp hitting 68 degrees. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North.

The rivers fished well again yesterday. While we didn’t see as strong of a hatch compared to the overcast days there were plenty of bugs and people found rising fish. It was another good dry fly day to be on the river. Hendricksons and blue quills are making up the bulk of the hatch. there are good numbers of apple caddis on some river sections. Cannonsville is spilling 1,502 cfs with a release of 673 cfs. Oquaga Creek has dropped to 152 cfs. Floating is still the only option on the tailwaters. The Beaverkill flow has dropped below 1,000 cfs opening up more wade options there and on the Willowemoc.

We’ll see sunshine early today with clouds moving in during the afternoon. There is a chance of a rain shower but the rainfall total will be negligible. 72 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the West. It looks like a good fishing day.

Yesterday was another good day. Blue Quills and hendricksons are making up the bulk of the hatch with strong numbers of apple caddis on some sections. There were rising fish throughout the system. This has been a good week for dry fly action. Cannonsville is spilling 1,906 cfs with a release of 673 cfs. Oquaga Creek has dropped to 152 cfs. Floating is still the only option on the tailwaters. The Willowemoc and Beaverkill will have some wade opportunities now. Wading on those rivers should improve over the weekend.

We’re hitting a warming trend with the air temp going to 65 degrees today. Mostly sun with a few clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. There is no rain in the forecast for this coming week.

Yesterday fished a lot like Wednesday. Decent hatches with fish looking up. Some people are finding fish on streamers but the dry fly fishing has turned on. Blue Quills and hendricksons are making up the bulk of the hatch. Cannonsville is spilling 2,352 cfs with a release of 673 cfs. Oquaga Creek has dropped to 209 cfs s the runoff is definitely subsiding. That said floating is still the only option. Use your best judgement and extreme caution. Definitely wear a life jacket. The rivers are still high and unsafe for wading. There will be some wade opportunities in the headwater streams.

Today will be a little bit warmer hitting 57 degrees. We may see a few showers totaling .01″ of rainfall. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North again. it looks similar to yesterday.

The fishing picked up yesterday with people landing fish on dries and streamers. The West Branch was mostly blue quills with a few hendricksons mixed in. Overall it was a really good day to be on the water. The fish needed that extra day to settle in to the higher flows. Today looks very similar to yesterday. Cannonsville is spilling 2,949 cfs with a release of 674 cfs. Oquaga Creek has dropped to 325 cfs so the feeder streams are falling back to normal. Floating is still the only option. Use your best judgement and extreme caution. Definitely wear a life jacket. The rivers are still high and unsafe for wading. there will be some wade opportunities in the headwater streams.

Today will be 54 degrees with good cloud cover. We may see a few showers totaling .01″ of rainfall. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North again.

The feeder creeks are still dropping slowly but the spill coming over the dams has increased. It takes time for the inflow above the reservoirs to make it across to the dam. That’s why the gauges show the flow dropping and then increasing again. Cannonsville is spilling 3,283 cfs with a release of 673 cfs. The rivers are still high and unsafe for wading. Oquaga Creek is still over 1,000 cfs so there is still a lot of water coming in below the dams too. The rivers are off color but show some improvement from yesterday afternoon. Some people will float today. Use your best judgement and extreme caution. Definitely wear a life jacket.

Today will be 50 degrees with good cloud cover. We may see a few showers totaling .04″ of rainfall. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The spill increasing as the feeder streams drop cause that dip in the flow
