Delaware River Report: October 18, 2022
The air temp is starting off at 32 degrees this morning so it will take a while to warm up today. We have a brief but heavy rain yesterday afternoon that seemed like we’d get some water out of but it ended up being negligible. The eastern drainage went up about 40 cfs and the West Branch didn’t budge. The cloud cover helped. We did see the olives in the afternoon and some fish we’re on them. We’ll have sun this morning with a few clouds coming inn during the afternoon. High of 51 degree with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The river flows are still dropping slowly but are all in good shape this morning. Wading is an option everywhere. Floating will be best on the Lower Eat Branch and Mainstem. It looks like it should be a decent blue wing olive day. and definitely have a few Isonychias ready. The air temp will be cooler hitting 58 degrees but we’ll have good cloud cover and maybe some afternoon showers. Wind will only be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

All of the rivers have dropped back to wadeable levels and the color is decent. Floating is best on the lower East Branch or Mainstem. Yesterday was a tough combination of but sun and wind but people found fish early on nymphs. There were a few fish eating dries in the afternoon during some wind lulls. It was mostly olives during the brief dry fly shots. We’ll have the sunshine today but no wind. That alone will make it a good day to be on the water, The air temp will hit 62 degrees.

The Beaverkill and Lower East Branch remain high this morning but are dropping back. The West Branch and Upper East Branch flows remain steady and low. We’re coming off a cool night so water temps dropped a couple of degrees. Today will be 66 dgrees and sunny so the rivers should continue to drop and the water temps will climb back up today. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the south. If Wunderground has the wind forecast correct find spots that give you some cover during the day. Supposedly they drop towards dark. The olives were a little spotty yesterday but there were enough hatching with some caddis to get some fish looking up. Nymphing seemed to be the better bet.

So far it looks like most of the rain hit the Eastern drainage. The Beaverkill is 2,500 cfs at Cooks Falls. the runoff is working it’s way down the East Branch. We’ll see the Mainstem flow increase quite a bit this morning. The West Branch is up slightly but looks good out front so far. The flow is 293 cfs at Hale Eddy. If that changes dramatically we’ll do another update. The rain should be finished now. We’ll hit 63 degrees with afternoon sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph out of the North.

The small olives hatched yesterday afternoon but there were fewer caddis and no Isonychias where we were fishing. The wind certainly didn’t help for a while. Some fish got on the olives so it ended up being an okay day. It looks like we’re in for close to .65″ of rain today. If it stays spread out over the course of the day we should be okay. There are a few thunderstorms to watch in the afternoon that could drop additional rain. Keep an eye on the radar and the gauge links below for the latest information. It looks like we’ll see another .65″ of rain overnight so definitely check the gauges tomorrow morning.

Yesterday was a beautiful day to be on the water. It felt like early Fall again. The olives hatched a little later in the afternoon than what we’ve been seeing . Tiny olives mixed with few larger ones made up the bulk of the bugs. The caddis were out too in enough numbers that the fish were eating them. Plus we saw a handful of Isonychias. Overall it was a good day. Today will be similar hitting 68 degrees. We’ll have sun early but should see more cloud cover in the afternoon. The wind will be up a bit more at 10 – 15 mph from the South. We shouldn’t see any rain until after dark.

Yesterday was a mix of clouds and sun. There were fish eating olives in the slow pools by mid afternoon. That’s pretty much what we’ve been seeing everyday along with some Isonychias and caddis. The caddis are thick in the bushes so they will hit the water in good numbers eventually. We have thick fog this morning but that should burn off quickly. We’ll hit 68 degrees with a partly cloudy sky. wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The wind didn’t help yesterday but people did find some fish eating olives in the afternoon. There were also some Isonychias and Heptagenia mixed in but again small olives made up most of the hatch. The weather looks a little better today with cloud cover and wind 5 – 10 mph from the West. We’ll be warmer tan yesterday hitting 60 degrees. We may see a brief rain shower but total rainfall will be negligible. Given the weather if things stay the same we should see some olives by 2 pm.

Yesterday was cold and windy with a decent afternoon olive hatch. The fish were eating despite the weather. Almost every day were seeing a decent number of #18 – 24 olives so definitely look for risers from 2 pm on. Last night was cold (34 degrees) and dropped the water temps a few degrees so that may push the timing off a little bit. We’ll warm up to 56 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the West.

There’s some light rain falling again this morning but o far it hasn’t been enough to affect the flows. We should clear up in the afternoon and be left with partial cloud cover. It definitely looks like a blue wing olive day but we’re still seeing a few cahills and Isonychias. Nymphing may your best shot early in the day. We’ll be cooler hitting 52 degrees with wind 10 – 15 from the North.
