Delaware River Report: September 9, 2022

The river flow are dropping back to normal and people are wading areas other than Stilesville again. The clarity is fine. The sun was out yesterday afternoon so nymphing worked well early. Small blue wing olives are still the main hatch but there are some Isonychisa, cahill/stenos, heptagenia, and flying ants around. We’re also seeing a few more caddis which means Fall is definitely coming. It’s really foggy this morning but that should burn off in the next hour or two. Today will be sunny hitting 80 degrees. wind will be light and variable.

The West Branch flow ha dropped back nicely for fishing

We had some power issues on Winterdale yesterday. Everything is up and running today. We ended up with quite a bit of needed rain over the last two days. The flows are dropping back to normal and while there is some color in the lower West it’s clear enough for fish to rise if the olives hatch. Most of the fish netted over the last couple of days have been on streamers but there have been a couple caught on dries in the slower tailouts. Blue wing olives have still been the main hatch but we are finding some Isonychias and yellow sallies. Flying ants are unpredictable but are definitely around too. We’ll be 78 degrees today with a sight chance of a shower. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

It’s been raining for almost 24 hours giving us a much needed soaking. The West Branch at Stilesville above most of the feeders is relatively unaffected like normal with a flow of 383 cfs. The feeder streams are pumping quite a bit of water so the flow at Hale Eddy is 1,560 cfs and is off color. We’re going to see a little more rain today but it should be less than 1/4″. If you’re wading your only real option is above the feeders in Stilesville. Floating is fine at these flows as long as there is no debris in the water. People will be throwing streamers this afternoon.

Keep an eye on the radar and the latest flow information. And use good judgement.

We had some rain overnight but most of it soaked right into the ground. The feeder streams are showing a small bump in flows this morning so click on the links below for the latest flow information. So far the changes have negligible and the release from Cannonsville is under 400 cfs. We may see some thunderstorms today and Wunderground is calling for 3/4″ of rain with more coming overnight. We’ll be much cooler at 71 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South. Small olives and small flying ants were on the water in good numbers yesterday. Definitely have your cahill / stenos, Isonychias, and small sulphurs.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy and the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls both peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped and the flow at Stilesvilleis 363 cfs this morning. Likely NYC DEP is counting on rain over the next two days tomeet the Montague flow target. We had a little rain overnight but just enough to wet the dust. We’ll have clouds this morning with scattered thunderstorms. Total rainfall today should be .09″ according to Wunderground. We may see more overnight and tomorrow. 82 degrees with light and variable wind. Small olives have still been our #1 producer. Definitely have your cahill / stenos, Isonychias, small sulphurs, and flying ants with you.

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped again. The flow at stilesville is 677 and falling. Hopefully it levels out between 500 – 650 cfs. We’re still mostly seeing small blue wing olives on the water. there are cahill / stenos and a few small sulphurs in the mix. Isonychias, yellow sallies, and flying ants are definitely on the menu too. There are some tricos around so keep your eyes open for risers mid morning in the big pools. Today has good potential with the air temp hitting 79 degrees and cloudy skies. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The release from Cannonsville has been adjusted slightly down bringing the flow at Stilesville to 919 cfs. You still have to choose your wade spots carefully at this level but there are spots that will work. Small blue wing olives are still making up the bulk of the mayflies we’re seeing on the water. Make sure to have a few Cahill / stenos, small, sulphurs, Isonychias, yellow sallies, and flying ants in your box. We’re coming off a very cool night and the air temp will only climb to 79 degrees today. Sunny with light and variable wind.

We finally go the with some storms that added some much needed water to the rivers. The West Branch at Stilesville is a flat 650 cfs and the flow at Hale Eddy is 819 cfs and falling. The West Branch out front has a very faint tint this morning but visibility is not an issue. There are a lot of small blue wing olives on the building this morning. Those will still be the main mayflies hatching. Cahill / stenos, small, sulphurs, Isonychias, yellow sallies, and flying ants need a place in your box today. The release from Cannonsville was dropped to 659 yesterday and increased to 950 cfs overnight. Again. Right now the flow is steady at Stilesville. For the latest flow information click on the Stilesville gauge link below. Yesterday was hot when the sun popped out. There were some flushes of olives mixed with a few sulphurs and light cahills / stenos. We are also finding some yellow sallies on the building so they are around in decent numbers. In between hatches some people were doing well fishing Isonychia dry droppers in the riffles. And definitely have a few flying ants in your box. Today will be 83 degrees with potential thunderstorms. Keep an eye on the radar to see if they’ll slide around us like normal or if we’ll see some rain. Total rainfall should less than 1/2″. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.
