Delaware River Report / Conditions August 8, 2021

Yesterday was a mix of haze and clouds so the water temps climbed but not as high as we thought they would.  The lack of direct sun definitely helped.  The upper river sections are still fishing with mid afternoon sulphurs plus a few olives and cahills.  In the evening the lower West had some small olives hatching.  A lot of fish are eating just under the surface thoughout the river so it’s a good tim eto play with wet flies or cut back your dries to make them sink in the film.  Blind casting Isonychias in the riffles lets you fish big bugs with some success.  We’ll have more sunshine today with a few clouds so watch those water temps on the East, Main, and Beaverkill.  84 degrees with light and variable wind.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 7, 2021

Yesterday was hot and sunny. The sulphurs still hatched in Deposit.  When they get real picky keep downsizing your patterns and find something very low profile.  Some of the pseudos can be #16 and #28.  The fish do get on them. Small wet flies can work when they’re eating just under the surface.  A shaded bank really helps too.  Today is going to be a lot like yesterday hitting 85 degrees.  We may have a few more clouds and  chance of an afternoon thunderstorm.  Winds 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The Esat Branch at Fishs Eddy, Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked close to or over 70 degrees yesterday.  They are starting off warmer this morning than yesterday.  Time to give these rivers a break again.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 6, 2021

Yesterday was very similar to Wednesday.  Sulphurs on the upper river sections mid day.  Mixed with a few olives and Isonychias.  If you were below Hale Eddy  mid day it’s a mix of nymphing and or blind casting Isonychias or cahill patterns. In the evenings you have a good shot at cahills and Isonychias.  We should pick up more cloud cover tomorrow according to Wunderground.

We’ll hit 86 degrees today with mostly sun. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The water temps started to creep up yesterday on the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls and on the Mainstem.  Watch those temps today with the sunshine and heat.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 5, 2021

Today looks like another sunny day with a few clouds here and there.  Stick to the normal program for this release and stay near the dams for daytime sulphurs and then drop down to the mid or lower West for cahills, Isonychias, and a few olives.  We are seeing some caddis back on the water.  Nymphing has been effective during the day.  If you don’t like to nymph we are finding fish blind casting Isonychias and cahills.  The cool nights have kept a lot of water open to us so take advantage before the heat comes back.  79 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  The overnight will be back down to 57 degrees.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 4, 2021

The sun stuck around a little longer than we wanted but there were some passing clouds that helped the fishing.  There is still mid day fishing on some sections with sulphurs, olives, and some Isonychias.  Mid West Branch picked up with decent cahills and a few pseudos in the late afternoon.  We’re also seeing a few golden drakes mixed in.   Nymphing midday put some fish in the net too. Today looks the same as yesterday with a high of 77 degrees and sunshine.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the East.  The cooler air temps have really helped the water temps.  Especially the nights in he 50’s.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2021

Water temps are holding on pretty well throughout the river system.  People are spread out and finding fish in odd spots for the beginning of August.  But if it’s sunny and you’re looking for daytime hatching your best bet is still to head close to the dams.  Sulphurs, olives, and Isonychias.  The lower river is fishing well on overcast and rainy days.  Bright sun has made it tougher than normal.  We’ll be cool again today at 76 degrees with light wind.  We should see some decent cloud cover move in this afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 2, 2021

We were hit with rain late yesterday afternoon that added some runoff to the rivers.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy peaked around 800 cfs and is already dropping this morning.  The rain did push olives and some Isonychias in the evening.  The fish did get on them in the slow sections until the river colored up just towards dark.  it cleared up overnight and Homepool looks good this morning.  We’ll see more sun today with no rain.  74 degrees with wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 1, 2021

Yesterday turned out to a beautiful day if not a little too sunny.  If you’re looking for dry fly activity on the sunny days move up towards the dam where the water is coldest.  The mid day sulphurs are still there along with olives and a few Isonychias.  The lower river has been day to day but decent on rainy days. Wunderground is calling for a 90% chance of rain today.  It looks like scattered thunderstorms so we may see between 1/4″ and 1/2″ of rain.  Maybe.  75 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 31, 2021

The bright sun and wind made yesterday tough but people managed some fish.  The upper river sections have been fishing better in the sun like normal.  Sulphurs, a few olives, and a few Isonychias are around bringing some fish up.  Mid to lower was a few caddis and probably fished best on nymphs.  It’s going to be cool again today hitting 71 degrees.  Sun mixed with a few clouds with 5 – 10 mph from the North.  That’s about half the wind we dealt with yesterday so hopefully they have that part of the forecast correct.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 30, 2021

We had some a couple of patches of rain yesterday but the rivers were mainly unaffected.  The cloud cover was great and we had decent olives, cahills, and some Isonychias.  Plus the suphurs on the Upper West too.  Overall it was a really good bug day.  The olives were 18 through 26 so there was a bit of everything out there.  There was also quite a bit of slashing so the wet fly people should have done really well.  When there’s good hatching it is usually a good nymphing day.  We lose the clouds this afternoon and see some sunshine.  72 degrees with wind 10 – 20 from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 29, 2021

The release from Cannonsville stayed the same and the flow at Stilesville is 602 cfs.  That keeps us at decent levels for wading and floating.  There were decent daytime hatches of small sulphurs and Isonychias on the upper West.  The lower West had a few caddis and Isonychias but nymphing and blind casting Isonychhias and cahills produced the most fish.  Wunderground is predicting an 80% chance of rain today.  Hopefully most of the storms slide south of us but we keep the cloud cover.  Definitely have your olives ready.  If the storms hit hard enough to color the water try dark streamers.  75 degrees with wind 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 28, 2021

We were hit with a good storm late yesterday afternoon but luckily it was brief.  Everything looks good on the West Branch.  The release from Cannonsville was cut slightly bring the flow at Stilesville to 602 cfs.  There is mid day hatching near the dams.  Mid to low West Branch picks up in the evening. Especially on the sunny day. Still sulphurs, olives, and isonychias.  Today will be 78 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun.  Probably more sun.  There is a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm so bring a raincoat.  Wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls peaked at 70 degrees yesterday.  The lower East and Main hit the high 60’s.
