Delaware River Report / Conditions August 23, 2019

It’s going to be much cooler today with a high air temp of 74 degrees.  We’ll see some clouds and sun with wind 5 – 10 from the North.  Tonight the air temp will drop back in to the 50’s.  That seems to the be weather we’re looking at for most of next week too.  There are still some sulphurs on the upper West but that is becoming a bit more sporadic.  Olives are going well with a few isonychias.  We are seeing more caddis in the last week or so- especially in the evenings.  Nymphing has worked well lately.  We’ve seen a lot of fish eating just under the surface so swinging unweighted wets could be a good technique to try.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 22, 2019

We have a light mist coming down this morning.  We’ll see a bit of sun mixed with the clouds early but the cloud cover should increase as the day goes on.  Total rainfall should be .02″ with wind from the West 5 – 10 mph.  If Wunderground is calling this right we should have a good day on the water.  They did not call it right yesterday and the sun broke through in the afternoon.  Olives, sulphurs, and few isonychias.  We’re still counting on some decent flying ants soon but it doesn’t hurt to throw them now on tough fish.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 21, 2019

Part of the Get Trashed cleanup volunteers. They’re awesome!

The lower West fished best with nymphs yesterday.  There were some small fish rising in the evening but not a lot of bugs until after dark.  There are some weeds and a bit of color in the lower river from the runoff still so check your rig often.  The upper West is your better shot for dry fly fish during the day.  That may change if we get the afternoon storms they are calling for.  We should see some cloud cover come in by lunch time with .15″ of rain over the course of the afternoon.  If the rain does come have your olives ready.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 20, 2019

The clouds hung around for a bit yesterday morning but the sun popped out in the afternoon.  The runoff from the feeder streams is dropping and Hale Eddy is under 700 cfs this morning.  We are still in the same hatching pattern with sulphurs, olives, and isonychias.  There are still a few tricos around in the morning.  If you’re not finding them move around a bit since that hatch seems to vary pool to pool.  We’re also seeing some caddis again and just a few flying ants (but not in large numbers yet).  Today we’re looking at sunshine, air temp in the low 80’s, and light wind.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 19, 2019

We had a good storm hit right around dinner time.  Rain and wind.  The flows are up slightly this morning but are already dropping back and the rivers seem to be in fine shape.  Fishing was okayt up until the storm.  There was a break in the evening just before dark that is was calm enough to fish again.  The West is clear enough to fish this morning.  We have olives and isonychias on the doors this morning.  Sulphurs on the upper river.  Today will be in the high 80’s with wind from the south 4 – 8 mph.  Partly cloudy sky.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 18, 2019

Get Trashed was a great event and now there is a lot less garbage in the West Branch.  All of the volunteers gave it their all and we’re looking forward to next year’s August river clean up.  We’d like to thank everyone who showed up.  It’s awesome to see people really care ab out the health of the Upper Delaware.

The rain held off until just about dark.  It was a brief but heavy storm again.  The river looks fine this morning with no real discernible change in flow.  The sulphur hatch is slowly waning on the upper river but the bugs are still showing up in fishable numbers.  There are quite a few olives on the door this morning.  We’re looking at a possibility of another isolated storm today with around 1/10″ of rain.  We have clouds now.  The air temp will hit the high 80’s with wind 3 – 8 mph from the south.  These hot humid days can be great for flying ants so make sure you have a few in your box.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 17, 2019

We had a great turn out for the Iron Fly last night.  There will be a lot of volunteers picking up garbage on the river today.  We’ll finish up with prizes and Troegs!  If you’re in the area pick up some trash and swing through for a beer.  We start at 10 am here at the shop.

Better conditions yesterday with good cloud cover and no real rain hitting us on the lower West.  Some areas were hit with scattered storms but we came through it just fine.  Today’s weather looks similar with a chance of afternoon scattered thunderstorms but no meaningful amount of precipitation.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South and the air temp will hit the low 80’s.  Olives, sulphurs, and isonychias.  If we do get the rain we may see some early olives on the lower West.  Otherwise head towards the dam for the afternoon sulphurs or nymph and swing wets until you see some fish rise.   There are a lot of small fish in the river right now so watch the rise forms carefully and be patient to find good sized fish.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 16, 2019

Instead of light rain from scattered storms spread out over 12 hours we had sun, clouds, and one heavy rain after dark.  Most of the rain soaked in to the ground and the lower West Branch looks fine this morning.  There are already a few fish rising out front in the slow foam.  If you’re in the area get on the water before the sun breaks through.  Once the sun pops out nymphing and wets will be better on the lower river while dry fly will be better on the upper sections.  If Wunderground is correct today we should keep most of the clouds and see some storms push through in the afternoon.  Total precip should be 1/10″.  If they are correct it could be a good dry fly day on the entire WB.  If they are correct.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 15, 2019

It looks like we’ll get a break from the sun today.  Clouds should move in by noon followed by some scattered thunderstorms.  Total rainfall looks like 1/2″ spread out over 12 hours.  It’s like some of the storms will slide either North or South of us but we should get some precipitation from this one.  Definitely have your olive box ready along with your sulphurs and isonychias.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  It looks like a really good fishing day.  Wunderground is calling for rain tomorrow and Saturday too so this could be a really good weekend.

We kick off the Get Trashed River cleanup with an Iron Fly party at Riverside Tavern tomorrow night.  Saturday morning the cleanup begins at 10 am.  If you’re in the area stop by or if you’re fishing pick up some trash and bring it by at the end of the day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 14, 2019

We had a couple of periods of light rain on the lower West Branch that had the olives hatching mid day.  Fish were eating on top but it all ended as soon as the rain stopped.  We had a bit more rain around 4 am but there is no noticeable change in flows due to runoff.  The release from Cannonsville has been cut back slightly and Stilesville is flowing at 485 cfs this morning.  We’re going to have some cloud cover this morning with sun coming through in the afternoon.  80 degrees and wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  Once the sun pops through look for the coldest water for dry fly action.  There are a lot of small fish in the river.  That’s pretty awesome.  The high water winter and Spring must have been great conditions for the young of the year to survive.  If you’re looking for big fish be selective and watch the rise forms carefully.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 13, 2019

We’re getting a break from the sunshine today.  The clouds are out this morning but the chance of rain has dropped to 30% with no real accumulation.  Overnight we may see .03″ according to Wunderground.  Rain would have been nice but we’ll take the clouds.  Bring a rain coat just in case.  The air temp will be in the high 70’s with wind 5 – 10 mph from the  South.  Overall it will be a nice day on the water.  The bigger fish may feel more comfortable rising without the sunshine.  Sulphurs, olives, and isonychias are still making up the bulk of the hatching.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 12, 2019

The sun was back yesterday with just a few clouds moving through.  The Upper West and Upper East still your best bets for daytime hatching on days like that.  The lower West is a good bet for nymphing early with the potential for dry fly fishing in the evening.  Sulphurs, olives, and isonychias are out there but there are some caddis showing back up.  They are mostly in the bushes but the fish are seeing them here and there so it’s worth throwing them.  We’re in for more sun today with the air temp reaching the low 80’s.  Wind will be 5 -10 mph from the South. We’ll cool down again tomorrow with the possibility of 1/4″ of rain.
