Delaware River Report / Conditions May 15, 2021

Everyone is talking about the huge amounts of caddis they saw on the rivers yesterday.  Overall it sounded like a good fishing day.  Today looks just as nice with the air temp hitting 68 degrees, sunshine, and wind 5 – 10 from the North.  there is a shot of a stray shower or thunderstorm so bring the raincoat.  The flows are dropping on the all the rivers.  The East Branch and Beaverkill are in great shape for wading.  The West Branch is coming down slowly but is 1,600 at Hale Eddy this morning.  There are sections that are wadeable at this level.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 14, 2021

The East Branch flow at Harvard has come down quite a bit and is 684 cfs.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls is 715 cfs.  There are definitely more wade opportunities opening up.  The West Branch flow is dropping slowly and sits just over 2,000 cfs this morning.  There is no significant rain in the 10 day forecast so the river flows should continue to fall over the next week.  Yesterday was a nice day to be on the water but today looks even better.  We have frost this morning but will hit 68 degrees this afternoon.  Sunshine with wind 5 – 10 from the North.  The bugs hatching differ from river section to section but definitely carry hendricksons, march browns, olives, and a wide range of caddis patterns.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 13, 2021

Wunderground is only forecasting the wind to be 8 – 10 mph from the North today.  That’s such a great change after the last fewdays of 10 to 20.  The air temp will hit 64 degrees with mostly sun and a few afternoon clouds.  Sounds like a nice day to be on the water.  Water temps look good throughout the system and should come up a bit over the next few days with the sunshine.  Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are still spilling so their respective rivers are coming down very slowly.  If you are wading stay over on the Beavekill / Willowemoc.  There’s no significant rain in the forecast so hopefully the West and East Branch flows drop to reasonable levels over the weekend.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 12, 2021

We’re on a warming trend and the air temp should be peaking close to 70 degrees by the weekend.  Today we’ll hit 60 degrees with some clouds and sun.  Wind will be 10 – 20 from the North.  So today sounds a lot like yesterday.  Nymphing and streamers have been bringing fish to the net early.  the hatches have been mainly mid afternoon with hendricksons still on some stretches and march brown / gray fox on others.  Caddis are on throughout the river system.  The flows are dropping slowly and the best wading is still on the Beaverkill / Willowemoc.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 11, 2021

Yesterday fished well with decent hatches and happy fish.  We’re still seeing hendricksons on some river sections while others have progressed on to march browns.  There are caddis everywhere.  The rivers are still high but there is wadeable water on sections of the Beaverkill and Willowemoc.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls is 1,200 cfs and falling.  The flow on the West Branch increased yesterday but has leveled off.  NYC DEP likely increased the release.  We should begin to drop slowly over the next few days as long as they don’t screw with the release.

We’re going to see some sunshine this afternoon.  The air temp will hit 55 degrees with wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.  There’s no significant rain in the 10 day forecast so the rivers should drop slowly as the spill and runoff subside.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 10, 2021

The river flows are up a bit this morning from the rain.  The West Branch looks fine as of 5:30 am.  Oquaga Creek looks like it peaked around 435 cfs and is already falling.  The Beaverkill is 1,500 cfs and still climbing so click on the gauges below for the latest information.

Yesterday fished really well.  It was wet and chilly but everyone out there seemed to be rewarded.  There were a lot of hendricksons on the water late afternoon. A lot of really nice fish were landed.   A few olive and blue quills were around too.  It looks like we’ll be dry for the next few days.  Today will be 57 degrees, partly cloudy, with wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 9, 2021

Today’s forecast has changed every time we look at it.  The latest we’re seeing looks okay for today.  We should have cloud cover with some rain beginning around 3 pm.  56 degrees, .15″ of rain during the day, and wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  Wunderground is calling for an additional 1/2″ of rain overnight.  The river flows are still dropping slowly this morning.  The Beaverkill / Willowemoc still offer the best wade opportunities.  If we do get the rain overnight double check the flows tomorrow morning.  We had good hatching yesterday and some nice fish were landed.  The temp drop made some of the fish a little weird but they should settle down today.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 8, 2021

The river flows are dropping according to 5 am gauge updates.  It is raining this click on the gauge links below for the most up to date information.  The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are still your best bets for wading.  The rivers fished well yesterday and everyone we talked to found fish eating on top.  Today looks good with cloud clover and another shower this afternoon. total rainfall today should be around 1/4″.  We’ll hit 50 degrees with wind5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 7, 2021

Most people reported good hatches yesterday.  There are definitely good numbers of caddis.  Some river sections are seeing hendricksons and blue quills while others have moved past those to march browns. The Beaverkill flow at Cooks Falls has dropped to around 1,000 cfs offering some wade opportunities.   Wunderground is showing some rain spread out over the next few days so check the gauges for the latest flows.  There is no wadeable water on the West Branch, East Branch and Mainstem.  We should see a light rain shower this afternoon with 5 – 10 mph wind from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 6, 2021

The river flows are up after the additional rain yesterday morning.  The East Branch, West Branch , and Mainstem have zero wade opportunities today.  We are floating without any issues and even landed fish yesterday afternoon.  The Beaverkill flow at Cooks Falls has already dropped back to 1,520 cfs this morning so wade opportunities will open up over there first.  If we trust Wunderground we should have no rain today and may even see the sun in the afternoon.

There has been more rain this morning and the rivers are rising.  The rivers are coloring up.  Wading is not recommended today.  Hopefully the rain stops soon and the rivers recover quickly.  Click on the links below for the most up to date information.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 4, 2021

The river flows bumped up slightly from yesterday’s rain and another shower overnight.  According to Wunderground we may see a little more rain today but most of it should hold off until after dark. So we should have good cloud cover with 5 – 10 mph wind from the South.   Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are both spilling.  The East and West Branches are in fine shape for floating but the best wade opportunities are on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc.  There are a lot of different bugs on the water so watch the fish carefully to figure out what they are doing.  If you see bugs and no fish don’t be afraid to move.  Some spots fish better than others in high water.
