Delaware River Report: May 6, 2024

Yesterday was cold and wet but some bugs did hatch and some people caught fish. The wind made it difficult but there were some opportunities. We’re still seeing some Hendricksons and Blue Quills on the West Branch. Apple and tan caddis are out in good numbers on non windy days. There are some March Browns, Gray Fox, and likely some cahills on the lower East Branch and Mainstem. Olives have been good on cloudy and rainy days. Yesterday’s rain bumped the river flows slightly. Everything is still in decent shape for wading and the lower East, Main, and West Branch are fine for floating. Today will be totally different with light wind and much warmer air temp.

Today will be 71 degrees and overcast. There is a slight chance of a rain shower. Wind will be light and variable.

Delaware River Report: May 5, 2024

We woke up to some light rain this morning but it hasn’t been enough to bump the river flows. We should see 1/4″ today. We’ve been dry and the leaves are budding out so it shouldn’t have much of an affect on the rivers. Today has a blue wing olive feel but there should also be Hendricksons, Blue Quills, March Brown, and Gray Fox depending on where you are fishing. Have your Hendrickson spinners handy just in case. Some days we’ve seen them mid afternoon and other days we’ve seen them in the evening. Cahills can’t be too far off on the Main and Lower East Branch. The apple caddis and little tan caddis may make an appearance if there are breaks in the wind or wind protected areas. Overall everyone found fish yesterday despite the wind.

Today will be 53 degrees, cloudy, with periods of rain. Total rainfall will be .25″. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 4, 2024

If you love caddis then yesterday was your day to be on the Delaware. Apple and Small tan caddis were out it abundance despite the wind. A lot of caddis. Plus a few Hendricksons and blue quills on some sections and March Browns and Gray Fox on other sections. Have your blue wing olives ready on all sections. We should be the cahills and even the sulphurs soon on the lower river sections. Today looks similar with a few more clouds. River flows are in great shape for floating and wading. 600 cfs on the West Branch is just about perfect after a high water early Spring.

Today will be 63 degrees, cloudy, with a slight chance of a rain shower. Total rainfall will be negligible. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 3, 2024

We had some connection issues with the blog yesterday but it seems to be resolved now. The release from Cannonsville has been dropped to 600 cfs. We’re still at a good level for floating and more wade opportunities just opened up. The weather looks good for the weekend with cloud cover and the possibility of some rain on Sunday. Some river sections are still seeing some Hendricksons and the last of the blue quills while other sections are March Browns and Gray Fox. Olives are still around along with apple and tan caddis. There were a lot of caddis in the air on the lower West yesterday despite the wind. Definitely have your spinner box with you.

Today will be 71 degrees with sunshine n the morning and increasing clouds in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 1, 2024

Some of yesterday’s thunderstorms missed us on the lower West and some hit us. Overall we got lucky and the river flows only bumped slightly. The West Branch at Hale Eddy is 1,090 cfs and dropping back to normal. The flows are still climbing a bit on the lower East Branch / Mainstem / Beaverkill but they should level out this morning. It’s still a mashup of Spring bugs but the concentration of each will change depending on where you are fishing. Blue wing Olives #18, Hendricksons #12 – 14, March Browns #10-2xl, Gray Fox #12-2xl, Blue Quill #18, tan caddis #18, and apple caddis #16-18. Nymphing or swinging wets will be your best bet early. The hatch timing should be normal happening by mid afternoon. The hatches should lst longer into the evening with today’s forecast. There have been some afternoon spinner falls mixed with duns so if you can’t figure a fish out take a close look for spinners in the film.

Delaware River Report: April 30, 2024

Yesterday’s thunderstorms missed us and we ended up with a fair amount of sunshine in the afternoon. Most of the water temps climbed pretty high for April (except the West Branch) but should drop back with the cooler days and potential rain today. It’s a big mix of bugs out there depending on which river section you’re fishing. Olives, Hendricksons, blue quills, gray fox, and March Browns are hatching, plus the tan caddis and apple caddis. The West Branch has stayed the coldest and is closest to being on a “Normal” hatch time frame but even it’s a little ahead this Spring. We’ll see if we get the rain this evening. These storms sometimes slide around us.

Delaware River Report: April 29, 2024

We had a few showers overnight but they amounted to nothing and the river flows are slightly lower than yesterday morning. Water temps are starting off a little warmer due to the warmer air temps. Today looks very similar to yesterday with even warmer air temps. Overall the rivers have been fishing very well with Hendricksons, blue quills, olives, apple caddis, and little tan caddis. The predominate bug changes day to day with the weather and river section so have a good selection. It wouldn’t hurt to have a few march browns, gray fox, and cahills in your box. Everything is a little early already and the warmer temps may push some hatches this week.

Delaware River Report: April 28, 2024

We had a few sprinkles yesterday afternoon and a shower overnight but it wasn’t enough to bump the river flows. Today looks like another good day to be on the river with clouds all day. There is a chance of thunderstorms but Wunderground is calling for only .08″ of rain and hopefully they’ll just slide around us. It should fish similarly to yesterday with a mix of Hendricksons, blue quills, olives, tan caddis, and apple caddis. Different river sections have different concentrations of bugs so have a little of everything ready. Nymphing is working early with the hatches coming in the afternoon. The exact timing and concentration of the hatches has been shifting a little with the weather so patience can pay off. If you’re fishing the lower East or lower Main it wouldn’t hurt to have a few march browns, gray fox, and cahills in your box. Everything is a little early already and the warmer temps may push some hatches this week.

Delaware River Report: April 27, 2024

Yesterday was another beautiful day on the water with sunshine and warm temps. The caddis were out along with some hendricksons and blue quills. Most people have been nymphing in the morning and finding rising fish in the afternoons when the water temps come up. The caddis can happen just about anytime so keep an eye out for occasional risers early. Today actually looks like classic fishing weather with cloud cover and some light rain. Hatches are varying a bit from river section to river section and things are a bit early and slightly jumbled together. Add your blue wing olives today along with Hendricksons, blue quills, little black caddis, apple caddis, and still some Quill Gordons. Overall it’s been fishing really well lately. People are wading all the rivers. Just pick your spots. The levels are good for floating.

Delaware River Report: April 26, 2024

Yesterday fished well with a mix of Hendricksons, blue quills, a few Quill Gordons, Tan caddis, and apple caddis. It’s quite a mix of bugs out there so if you find fish you can’t get to eat change up your fly pattern. Lower water, clear, and bright sun means you have to be a little more careful with your presentation and pattern selection. Today looks a lot like yesterday but with even less wind. We’ll start off cool but once the sun pops everything will warm up nicely. The caddis have been really active in the sunshine so we may see some dry fly opportunities before the mayflies hatch mid afternoon. The West Branch at Stilesville is 962 cfs. People are wading some spots. Just pick those spots carefully. The rest of the rivers are in great shape for wading.

Delaware River Report: April 25, 2024

The releases from Cannonsville and Pepacton have been cut back. The West Branch release is 896 cfs. Both reservoirs have stopped spilling. This opens up more wade opportunities and is still good for floating. The wind made yesterday difficult. The hatches seemed to be predominately apple and tan caddis. We’re coming off a cold night but will have sunshine and 56 degrees. The water temps should come up in the afternoon and push some hatches. We are still seeing hendricksons, blue quills, and olives mixed with the caddis. Plus a few Quill Gordons. Wind won’t be an issue today.

Delaware River Report: April 24, 2024

Yesterday was another good day to be on the water. Nymphing worked well early and the hatches came in the afternoon. Hendricksons, blue quills, and quill gordons were on the water with some blue wing olives. The wind made it challenging at times but things paid off for the people who were patient. We’ll have wind again today but the rain totals will be negligible. The river flow are dropping. The East, West, and Mainstem are still better from a boat but we’re close to some wade opportunities. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are at great levels.

Today will be 55 degrees with a few showers early then cloudy skies in the afternoon. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North.
