River Reports

Delaware River Report: May 22, 2024

Today will be another sunny hot one. Nymphing or swinging wets will be good options early. The evening should bring decent caddis again and the sulphurs towards dark. There will be a mix of cahills, March Browns, and Gray Fox. Those have been a bit sporadic but that can make them good searching patterns. We should get a 10 degree drop in air temp tomorrow with a possible bit of rain overnight.

Both the East Branch at Fishs Eddy and the Mainstem at Lordville hit 69 degrees yesterday so it’s time to give those rivers a break until they cool back down.

Today will be 88 degrees with sunny to partly cloudy skies. There is a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm or shower. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 21, 2024

The release from Cannonsville was bumped up slightly to 450 cfs. 50 cfs won’t change much so water conditions will be the same as yesterday. We’ll have sunshine this morning so nymphing and swinging wets would be good bets. Blind casting March Browns and Gray Fox in the riffles could be good if you want to stick with dries early. The caddis are still around in good numbers on some sections and may offer some daytime shots too. Some sections are seeing strong sulphur hatches in the evening. We’re in for a couple more hot days but we should see it cool down Thursday. The Mainstem at Lordville hit 66 degrees yesterday so keep an eye on the river temps today.

Today will be 86 degrees with sunshine in the morning and a few clouds coming in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 20, 2024

Today will look a lot like yesterday but a bit warmer. Good bets early would be nymphing or swinging wets. No wind and sunshine may get the caddis active early so watch for occasional slashers in the riffles. The mayflies may be pushed later as the sun drops. It definitely looks good for spinners. We’re still seeing some March Browns and Gray Fox. The sulphurs are moving up river and hatching around dark. There are still decent tan caddis in the colder water sections. You’ll still find some apple caddis around too.

Today will be 83 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. Wind will be light and variable.

Dark Blue Wing Olive – #16 – 18 – Baetis spp.

Yesterday’s rain didn’t amount to much but the cloud cover was decent. The West Branch at Hale Eddy bumped slightly to 570 cfs but is already dropping back to normal. The other rivers didn’t budge from the rain. Today will be warmer with more sunshine in the afternoon. Generally that means decent caddis during the day with the mayflies hatching a bit later. March Browns and Gray Fox can hatch sporadically throughout the day so watch the riffles for them too. The sulphurs have been coming at dark.

Today will be 77 degrees with clouds early and sun peaking through by the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable.

Delaware River Report: May 18, 2024

It’s 7 am and we’re seeing some very light rain. Total rainfall shouldn’t be enough to affect the rivers but the cloud cover is great. A few showers may push the olives a little earlier in the day. The wind will be the same as yesterday at 5 – 10. Overall it looks like a good day to be on the water. Some river sections had strong caddis yesterday along with some spinners in the evening. As you move downstream there are more March Browns, Gray Fox, and Sulphurs but have a few of those no matter where you’re fishing. Wet flies and nymphs have worked in the morning but you can also blind cast some of the bigger bugs in the riffles.

Today will be 64 degrees with rain this morning and scattered showers this afternoon. Total rainfall should be a negligible .18″. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 17, 2024

The weather seemed a bit unsettled early yesterday but the rain missed us and the clouds rolled in during the afternoon. There were early spinners and the caddis picked up. It’s a jumble of bugs with the last Hendricksons holding on the West Branch, March Browns, Gray Fox, and Sulphurs on the Main and lower East. Caddis are still strong everywhere when the conditions are right. The March Browns, Gray Fox, and sulphurs are moving up river and we should see more of them this week higher in the system. We are seeing a few now. Add cahills to the mix and there are a lot of different bugs and a lot happening out there. The timing shifts with the weather so be patient if you don’t see anything right away.

Today will be 74 degrees and generally cloudy. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 16, 2024

The West Branch flow has leveled out around 450 cfs at Stilesville. The East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem flows are dropping back after the rain. They should level out this afternoon. Everything looks good and the rivers are at what could be considered normal conditions. Today will be much warmer with sunshine in the morning. That could get the caddis active in the riffles a little earlier in the day. The mayfly hatches may push a little later in the day. If the wind drops in the evening it looks like good spinner weather. We’re still seeing Hendricksons on the West Branch and more March Browns, Gray Fox and Sulphurs on the Main and lower East. The lower water levels combined with the sun and warmer air temps should increase the water temps pushing the hatches a bit. Especially on the lower West. It’s a jumble of bugs out there so bring all your flies.

Today will be 72 degrees with sunshine in the morning and increasing clouds i the afternoon. Wind will be 10 – 15 from the North.

The release from Cannonsville has been cut back. The flow at Stilesville is 450 cfs. The river level will drop for a bit this morning and level out. The Beaverkill and East Branch flows are going up a bit due to last night’s rain. So far it doesn’t seem like much of a bump and the rain should taper off to occasional showers. We had a bit more sun than the forecast called for but that made the caddis more active. Today definitely feels like an olive day. The West is still seeing some Hendricksons and Hendrickson spinners. We even found a few Quill Gordons on the door the other morning. Gray Fox, March Browns, cahills, and sulphurs are also around. Today’s wet and cooler weather could push some midday spinners too.

Today will be 64 degrees cloud cover and occasional rain showers. Total precipitation should be .12″. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 14, 2024

Yesterday fished well again. Good cloud cover and good hatches. Hendricksons and olives on the West while the lower East and Mainstem have some March Browns, Gray Fox, cahills, and sulphurs. Caddis and olives. Nymphing or swinging wets before the hatches have been productive. On the cloudy days start looking for the mayflies around noon or 1. Caddis can be active and on the water anytime so watch the riffles for the occasional slashy rise. Some days the spinners have come midday with the hatches and other days they’ve fallen a bit later.

Today will be 77 degrees with partial cloud cover in the morning. Cloud cover will increase in the afternoon with a slight chance of rain. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.

Yesterday fished well in the afternoon. People are still chasing Hendricksons on the West while the lower East and Mainstem have some March Browns, Gray Fox, cahills, and sulphurs. Caddis and olives are still everywhere. Some March Browns and Gray Fox have been spotted on the West too. It’s a big mix of different bugs right now. The intensity of the hatches vary based on where you are but everyone seems to be finding decent targets. Nymphing or swinging wets early has worked well too. Today looks like another good day with decent cloud cover. We shouldn’t see any significant rain showers. Flows and water temps look great.

Delaware River Report: May 12, 2024

Yesterday started off with a little more sun than originally forecasted but the clouds did move in by lunchtime. It fished a lot like the day before with tan caddis, apple caddis, some flushes of Hendricksons, and olives. There are definitely March Browns, Gray Fox, and some cahills on the water. Everyone had targets to work with. Today looks similar again with some rain this morning ending with cloudy skies this afternoon. Wind looks like yesterday’s too. We had some rain falling this morning but again the rivers came through in fine shape. The flows are actually down slightly from yesterday morning,

Today will be 54 degrees with some rain in the morning tapering off to clouds in the afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 11, 2024

Yesterday was cool with light rain which turned out well for fishing in the afternoon. Some people reported decent flushes of Hendricksons on some river sections while others saw the caddis come out. It took a while to warm up so the morning was a nymph / wet fly game. Today looks similar but with warmer air temps. The river flows bumped a bit from the rain but not enough to affect wading or floating. The rivers have peaked and are dropping back this morning so we came through the storms just fine.

Today will be 59 degrees with clouds and a possible afternoon shower. Total rainfall today should be .02″. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.
