Delaware River Report: September 18, 2022

The release from Cannonsville remains around 300 cfs this morning. The sun broke out yesterday afternoon but we did see some cloud cover at times. Most of the fish netted came on nymphs but there were enough dry fly shots to keep you looking. Small olives and Isonychias boated fish on the West Branch and small olives and cahills both seemed to work on the Mainstem. Today looks similar with sun and clouds mixed. The fog should burn off in the next hour. 80 degrees with 5 – 10 mph wind from the South. We may see a stray afternoon thunderstorm so watch the radar.

The release from Cannonsville was dropped down and the flow at Stilesville is 294 cfs. There is still some runoff coming from the feeders but we could use a little more water. Yesterday was mostly a nymph day for us with some dry fly fish eating olives in the evening. If you don’t like to nymph stick with running Isonychias or Cahill patterns through the riffles. We have decent cloud cover this morning but that should burn off and let the sun through. 78 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: September 16, 2022

We’re a little late this morning due to computer issues. It’s 40 degrees this morning so the water temps dropped a few degrees overnight. The river lows are dropping back to normal and everything looks good for the weekend. Small olives with a few Isonychias have been on the water. We:re seeing more caddis in the bushes so definitely have some patterns ready. We’ll start off with sunshine once the fog burns off but should see some clouds this afternoon. 72 degrees with wind 5- 10 mph from the North.

You can feel Fall in the air this morning with the air temp in the high 40’s. The rivers are dropping back to normal flows after the rain and everything is in good shape this morning. We’re still fishing small olives and blind casting Isonychias in the riffles. Some river sections should see more Heptagenias hatching soon along with caddis. We did see a few yellow sallies fly by us last night too. today will be cooler hitting 66 degrees with a nighttime temp of 40 degrees. Sunshine and wind 10 – 15 mph from the North. Wunderground shows some wind relief tomorrow.

The river flows have peaked and are beginning to drop throughout the system. The lower West Branch is much clearer this morning. Visibility is fine and the flow is great for both floating and wading. We have thick fog in spots but that should burn off mid morning. Small olives are still the main hatch with patchy Isonychias. Nymphing and blind casting the riffles will both be good bets mid day. We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 75 degrees. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the north so choose your spot accordingly.

Late Morning Update: One of the feeders must have been hit with an isolated storm. The lower West is off color and Hale is now 728 cfs. Hopefully this is the end we’ll peak and begin to drop soon. Stilesville remains a steady 363 cfs.

We had some rain overnight that increased the river flows. Nothing crazy and it looks like the flows are starting to level out. Hale Eddy is just under 700 cfs. Some of the feeders are adding color to the river so keep that in mind. It’s not chocolate but it’s not clear either. If the rain stops it should look much better this afternoon. It looks perfect for streamers this morning. If you do see fish rise in the tailouts try small olives or Isonychias. We may see some thunderstorms this afternoon so keep an eye on the radar. We have decent cloud cover, wind 5 – 10 mph out of the West, and 71 degrees.

Yesterday’s weather was perfect for Paint the Delaware Pink. It’s a great organization so please click on the link to learn more about it, We had decent cloud cover in the morning and some light rain in the afternoon. The fishing was good with a mix of nymphs and dry flies. Small olives and Isonychias accounted for most of the dry fly fish. There are still a few cahill / stenos, Heptagenia, and flying ants around so keep those boxes handy. The river levels and temps look geed this morning. We have a slight chance of rain this morning with decent clouds again. Well hit 76 degrees with light wind. There is a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms that could bring heavier winds so keep an eye on the radar.

We have decent cloud cover this morning and may see a few showers before lunch. There is a better chance of steady rain this afternoon. Total rainfall should be around .12″ so it should help the fishing hopefully pushing the hatches earlier in the day. Small olives are still the main hatch with a mix of Isonychias, cahill / stenos, yellow sallies, heptagenia, and flying ants in the mix. Today will be cooler with the air temp hitting 69 degrees. Wind will be a 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The river flows have settled a bit and everything looks good this morning. The afternoon sunshine made dry fly fishing a little tough during the day but nymphing and swinging wets worked early. The dry fly fishing came in the evening as the sun dropped. Small olives are still the main hatch with a mix of Isonychias, cahill / stenos, yellow sallies, heptagenia, and flying ants in the mix. Plus a few more fall caddis are showing up. Today will be sunny with the air temp hitting 80 degrees. Wind will be a non factor.

The river flow are dropping back to normal and people are wading areas other than Stilesville again. The clarity is fine. The sun was out yesterday afternoon so nymphing worked well early. Small blue wing olives are still the main hatch but there are some Isonychisa, cahill/stenos, heptagenia, and flying ants around. We’re also seeing a few more caddis which means Fall is definitely coming. It’s really foggy this morning but that should burn off in the next hour or two. Today will be sunny hitting 80 degrees. wind will be light and variable.

We had some power issues on Winterdale yesterday. Everything is up and running today. We ended up with quite a bit of needed rain over the last two days. The flows are dropping back to normal and while there is some color in the lower West it’s clear enough for fish to rise if the olives hatch. Most of the fish netted over the last couple of days have been on streamers but there have been a couple caught on dries in the slower tailouts. Blue wing olives have still been the main hatch but we are finding some Isonychias and yellow sallies. Flying ants are unpredictable but are definitely around too. We’ll be 78 degrees today with a sight chance of a shower. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

It’s been raining for almost 24 hours giving us a much needed soaking. The West Branch at Stilesville above most of the feeders is relatively unaffected like normal with a flow of 383 cfs. The feeder streams are pumping quite a bit of water so the flow at Hale Eddy is 1,560 cfs and is off color. We’re going to see a little more rain today but it should be less than 1/4″. If you’re wading your only real option is above the feeders in Stilesville. Floating is fine at these flows as long as there is no debris in the water. People will be throwing streamers this afternoon.

Keep an eye on the radar and the latest flow information. And use good judgement.
