Delaware River Report: April 28, 2022

Yesterday was a tough day but there were bugs and some fish. The wind, rain, and occasional snow made things a bit uncomfortable but people landed fish. It was a good day to catch some fish in the afternoon and get back inside a warm room early. If you can find a wind break blue quills, olives, and hendricksons are in the mix. Nymphing is picking up and people are still catching fish on streamers. Today will be warmer hitting 48 degrees. We’ll start off with some clouds and a possible snow shower. The afternoon will be sunny with wind 15 – 20 mph out of the North.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are still spilling. The East Branch, West Branch, and Mainstem are in fine shape for floating but are too high for safe wading. The flows are dropping. The Beaverkill flow is 800 cfs and fine for wading along with the Willowemoc. Click on the links below for the latest flow information

Delaware River Report: April 27, 2022

Yesterday looked great on paper but the hatches were a bit spotty. People still found bugs and fish but some river sections fished better than others. If you’re not seeing hatches in the afternoon checkout other rivers or river sections. Olives, blue quills, Quill Gordons, and hendricksons are now on the water. Little black caddis and stoneflies are in the mix too. Today will be much cooler with a high of 43 degrees. There may be a stray shower but there shouldn’t be any measurable amount of rain. The wind is back from the North 10 – 20 mph. The leaves are beginning to pop so the wind should be less of a factor over the next week.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are still spilling. The East Branch, West Branch, and Mainstem are in fine shape for floating but are too high for safe wading. The flows are up slightly from runoff but should drop back again today. The Beaverkill flow is right at 1,000 cfs so there are still some wade opportunities there. Delaware River Report: April 26, 2022

We had the wind to contend with yesterday but the hatches are progressing and we;re seeing a good mix of bugs out there. Olives, blue quills, Quill Gordons, and hendricksons are now on the water. Little black caddis and stoneflies are in the mix too. Today will be cooler with the air temp hitting 60 degrees. We’ll have cloud cover and a possible passing shower. Wind will be light and variable. It sounds like today will be th ebest wind day we’ve seen so far this season.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are still spilling. The East Branch, West Branch, and Mainstem are in fine shape for floating but are too high for safe wading. The flows are dropping. The Beaverkill flow dropped below 1,000 cfs so there are some wade opportunities there. Otherwise look to the Willowemoc and small headwater streams. Delaware River Report: April 25, 2022

Yesterday afternoon turned out as nice as advertised with sunshine and less wind then we’ve seen this season. People are catching fish on dries, nymphs, and streamers. The bugs have picked up with blue quills and olives making up most of the mayflies. There are fishable numbers of hendricksons now showing on some river sections. The water temps are climbing which should push the mayfly hatches. Today looks like another good day with some sunshine and air temp approaching 70 degrees. Wind will be up a bit 10 – 20 mph from the South. If the bugs are are there the fish will eat. Look for wind protected areas.

Delaware River Report: April 24, 2022

Today looks like a beautiful day to be on the water. The air temp will hit 70 degrees, sunshine, and wind 10 mph from the South. The rivers are still high but have leveled off. The best wading is still on the Willowemoc and feeder streams. The Beaverkill flow should drop over the next few days opening up more opportunities. The East, West, and Main are still high with both reservoirs spilling but all of them are fine for floating. Streamers are still putting most of the fish in the net but there are good numbers of olives and blue quills. Stoneflies and little black caddis have been active in the afternoon.

Delaware River Report: April 23, 2022

The flows are up a bit on the West Branch, East Branch, and Mainstem. There is some runoff in the feeder streams from the snow melt. Both reservoirs are spilling and that also increased from the snow melt. We are floating but are too high to wade. the Beaverkill flow is also up but has peaked and is beginning to fall. It’s also too high to wade but should drop over the next few days. The Willowemoc and feeder streams have the best wade opportunities right now. Yesterday was tough in the wind and rising water. Most people stuck with streamers in the higher flows. Things should settle down today with cloud cover the air temp approaching 60 degrees. Wind will be half of yesterday’s at 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report: April 22, 2022

Our power is back on and we’re up and running this morning. The river flows are up from the snow melt but are beginning to drop. All of the rivers are in good shape for floating. Wading will be best and safest on the Willowemoc and headwater streams. The Beaverkill flow should drop over the weekend offering more wade opportunities. The wind has kept it mostly a streamer game but we are finding fish eating olives and blue quills on top when we get a break. Look for protected areas in slower water. Today will be sunny with a high of 56 degrees. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report: April 18, 2022

We have some frost on the ground this morning but eventually we’ll hit 51 degrees with some sunshine. It will be another windy one at 10 – 20 mph from the South. We should see some snow tonight (around 5″ but the air temp is back up in the 40’s tomorrow. We are seeing decent hatches but the wind has limited the dry fly fishing. Streamers have been the best option. Some people are doing well nymphing too. The tailwater flows remain too high to wade but are falling. The best wade opportunities are the Beaverkill and Willowemoc.

Delaware River Report: April 17, 2022

Happy Easter Sunday. Wunderground hit the forecast yesterday. We started off nice and then had steady rain in the afternoon. The rain bumped up the Beaverkill flow slightly but it remains wadeable this morning and is already falling. The West Branch, East Branch, and Mainstem flows didn’t change much from the rain. They are still too high for wading but are dropping slowly. Yesterday was a good streamer day. We’re still seeing alewives in the river and the fish are definitely well fed. They are some fish eating stoneflies, caddis, and a few olives on top but that’s been more of a bonus so far. The dry fly fishing will improve as the flows drop and water temps rise this week. We’ll be a little cooler today with the air temp hitting 43 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. The wind continues for us at 10 – 20 mph from the North.
