Delaware River Report: August 1, 2022

There was a pulse of cold water released from Cannonsville last night but theflow at Stilesville has already dropped back to normal. Hale Eddy is perfectly wadeable and the flow should drop back to normal slowly this morning. Small sulphurs, followed by small olives are making up most of the hatch. There are cahills and Isonychias around too. Nymphing and swinging wets has also paid off mid day. We’ll see a bit more sunshine today with the air temp hitting 81 degrees. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

Delaware River Report: July 31, 2022

There was another cold water pulse from Cannonsville overnight. Less water than they pulsed last week so it shouldn’t be noticeable when you’re on the river. Yesterday was bright with a little more wind than we would have liked but there were sulphurs and fish eating in the coldest sections of river. We have some fog this morning and should have some cloud cover once that burns off. Small sulphurs, followed by small olives made up most of the hatch. There are cahills and Isonychias around too. Nymphing and swinging wets has also paid off mid day. Cloudy, 83 degrees, and light wind.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

Delaware River Report: July 30, 2022

The upper river sections fished well again with mid day sulphur hatches. The fish can be a bit picky but they are there and rising. Presentation is more inportant than exact pattern. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives made up most of the hatch. Blind casting Isonychias has brought some fish to the net- especially early and late in the day. Sunshine, 79 degrees, and wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report: July 29, 2022

We were hit with a few storms yesterday afternoon and some light rain this morning but most of the precipitation soaked right into the ground. The bump in flows is negligible and you won’t notice any difference from yesterday. We do have some thick fog on the water but that should burn off in a couple of hours. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives made up most of the hatch. Isonychias worked well for some people on the lower West Branch yesterday. We’ll see sunshine early with a few clouds in the afternoon. The high will be 85 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the West.

Yesterday felt like a normal summer day with mid day dry fly action closer to the dams and some on the lower West early and late in the day. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives made up most of the hatch. Most people are fishing the small sulphurs. Today will star off cloudy. There are some potential thunderstorms in the afternoon but hopefully they slide around us like normal. 86 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The clouds stuck around most of the day making yesterday a bit more pleasant than it has been lately. The lower West fished early while the fog was still on the water. Nymphing worked well in the afternoon. The afternoon hatches are coming off closer to the dams offering some daytime shots. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives should be on the water. We’ve seen some caddis in the mornings. Blind casting Isonychias and cahills in the riffles has put some fish in the net. We’ll have a bit more sun today with the air temp hitting 85 degrees. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: July 26, 2022

A few thunderstorms passed through overnight but the west Branch flow is steady with the 500 cfs release. The Beaverkill and East Branch flows bumped up slightly but nothing really noticeable.

Today will be cooler hitting 78 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. Not a bad day to be on the water. The best daytime hatching should be in the coldest water near the dams. The lower West Branch should pick up in the evening. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives should be on the water. There are Isonychias and caddis around too.

Delaware River Report: July 25, 2022

We had some storms pass through overnight and woke up to some light rain this morning. So far the West Branch gauge shows the flow as a steady 500 cfs. The Beaverkill flow has bumped up slightly. If anything major changes we’ll do an update here.

Today we’ll have decent cloud cover with some rain. Total rainfall should be a non factor at .17″. There may be some storms in the afternoon with decent wind gusts and more rain but hopefully the slide around us. The air temp will hit 80 degrees. Olives, sulphurs, and cahills. If the wind does pick up nymphing or swinging wets will be a good option this afternoon.

There was another bigger pulse of cold water out of Cannonsville overnight. There was no pulse from Pepacton on the East Branch. This larger pulse seems to be helping keep downriver a bit cooler than it was earlier in the week.

Today will be another hot, sunny day. There are some thunderstorms forecast for the evening and overnight that will bring us some lower air temps. While it’s still hot out, look for rising fish in the coldest water. Have that olive box handy, as well as your sulphurs, some large Cahills and Isos.

We had a much bigger pulse from the Cannonsville reservoir overnight. According to the gauges, the pulse is already stopped and the levels will be dropping back. There was no pulse from Pepacton on the East Branch last night.

We’re expecting another hot, sunny day. There are some possible thunderstorms in the forecast on Monday which would bring some relief and much needed rain. While it’s still hot out, look for rising fish in the coldest water. Have that olive box handy, as well as your sulphurs, some large Cahills and Isos.

Delaware River Report: July 22, 2022

For the third day in a row we’re getting a pulse of cold water on both rivers. Wunderground is calling for a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon which could bring a much needed break in the hot weather. Even so, look for fish in the colder water close to the dams. We had reports of good hatches of olives mid-day and the sulphurs continue to hatch in the evening. Keep your eye out for the occasional large Cahill.

Delaware River Report: July 21, 2022

NYSDEC is again releasing a 12 hour 200cfs pulse from Cannonsville and a 6 hour 100cfs pulse from Pepacton due to the high temperatures. The pulse at Cannonsville will last until 11:00am today, the Pepacton pulse has already been completed. The Lordville gauge’s temperature reading has been malfunctioning since Tuesday so it’s tough to tell if the pulse is affecting the downstream temperatures as intended. With the continued warm weather stay where it’s coolest. We’re seeing mainly Sulphurs with a few Isos.
