Delaware River Report / Conditions September 29, 2011
Seriously Mother Nature? It’s going to be like this huh?
More stinking rain, and the rivers are starting to rise again. The East Branch system (East, Beaverkill, Willowemoc) are all blown out, and really rising, where the West has just leveled out at “only” 4,200 CFS – needless to say, not wadeable, and might not even be decent for streamer fishing, due to the color of the water. While hopeful they will suddenly drop for the weekend, we are not optimistic.

Rain. Always before I have a trip planned. As you can see from the graph below, we got hammered last night with thunderstorms and rain, jumping all of the rivers up substantially, while also blowing out the once-clear Beaverkill and East Branch. All are dropping quickly, and will likely clear by the weekend (the West Branch stayed about as turbid as it has been, and will likley remain so), but today looks like a tough one out there.

Indian Summer. Although everyone may smile when they hear it, it was not such a good thing for us here on the river yesterday. Bright sun and 80+ degree temps made for a day more like August than late September, and kept both the bugs and the fish down. As it has been over the last few series of days, the streamer fishing has been decent, with the brown trout eagerly feeding in anticipation of the upcoming spawn.

Fishing on the West Branch was a little bit tough yesterday, but definitely picked up on the Main Stem, which is running much cleaner and clearer than the West. We had hatching on both rivers, but the fish did not seem very active on the West aside from a handful of quick caddis strikes. We will have some more boats out on the water today, so hopefully will be bringing good news for you tomorrow!

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 25, 2011
The rain we expected yesterday seems to have gone around us! Finally we catch a little bit of a break! All three rivers are steadily dropping, and we have seen some clearing in the river outside of the shop. There is still a good deal of turbidity (cloudiness), but not so much that fish won’t break through looking for some dry flies if they present themselves, and if you are in slower water. Black has been the streamer color of choice, with white a very close runner-up, depending on your proximity to the dam (white works better the closer you get). Have a great Sunday everyone!

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 24, 2011
Wow. Rain. Who would have guessed a weekend was coming and the river would get rain and double in flow? Well, I should have considering that’s how most weekends went this year! Sheesh! Anyway, the river did jump up to 3,000 cfs overnight, but it is quickly dropping. The color was already off from the reservoir likely ‘turning’ but the rain did not further add to it. Looks like another great streamer day! Dave and Bruce had a fantastic day out yesterday, landing several serious piggies. Since it’s David’s birthday today, I might just let him take the day off and go out to try again, since these browns are definitely hungry and ready for the spawn!

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 23, 2011
Cloudy and overcast this morning, with rain predicted this afternoon – perfect Olive weather! The West Branch is a bit off-color today which does present a small problem for dry fly fishing, but hopefully the reservoir will clear up, and we will get back to normal visibility!

Yet more clouds and rain! We are starting to wonder what the sun looks like down here. That being said, we are looking at a great day for pseudos and other olives throughout the day, as well as killer streamer weather. River levels are still up, but we talked to a few fishermen that found wadeable water on the West Branch – if you’re willing to look for it!

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 21, 2011
BUGS!! We we ecstatic to see our fall mayflies hatching in BIG numbers yesterday on the main stem. Isonychias were hatching in droves, and pseudos made their appearance later on in the evening, with fish rising to take them. This is a VERY good sign, a sign that the flooding has not adversely affected them. The fish are typically unaffected by the higher water, as they can seek shelter down at the bottom, but the bugs on the outsides of the river where it is shallower are always at risk. Glad to see they made it through, let’s hope for another good day out there today!!

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 20, 2011
The fall reservoir spill is officially over! Cannonsville is back down under 100%, so we are now looking at pure release, and the input from various small feeders as well as Oquaga Creek. Temperatures will remain more steady as a result of this, which can only be beneficial for our late season hatching! Today we are expecting clouds and scattered rain, with a high near 70, making this a fantastic BWO day – let’s see if they decide to come out and play!!

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 19, 2011
The cold nights we are receiving have been very beneficial for the water temps on all three branches of the Delaware, dropping all of them into the mid to low 50’s. That said, with the forecast of overcast skies and showers in the near future for some time, fishing should be great on all three. With the high water streamers continue to be the way to go, however you can still find fish rising throughout the day. Iso’s, caddis, pseudo’s, trico’s, and Heptagenia hebe’s are the main bugs that we are seeing on the water.

BRRRRR! It was in the 40s this morning when we went to get our coffee – looks to barely get above 60 today! Great weather for keeping the water cool and the fish / bugs active! We have two boats going out today, so expect a full report of their outing tomorrow morning!
