Delaware River Report / Conditions April 19, 2021

Some river sections saw decent Hendricksons mixed in with olives and blue quills yesterday. The little black caddis and a few stoneflies are still around too.   The sections that didn’t report good Hendricksons reported really good olive hatches.  It sounded hard to make a bad decision yesterday.  Just about everyone we spoke with had some kind of good dry fly action.  It’s cool this morning but should warm up into the low 60’s this afternoon.  We have cloud cover and the chance of light rain.  Light wind.  Today should fish really well.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 18, 2021

Most of the river fished yesterday with good hatches in the afternoon.  Nymphing worked well in the morning but the olives and blue quills came in the afternoon offering good dry fly fishing.  It was cold, wet, and unpleasant out for a while but well worth it for those who stuck it out.  Today looks just as good but even warmer.  We should hit the high 50’s with cloud cover and a chance of a shower.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the North.  It should fish really well today.

It’s good to finally see solid hatching after the long winter.  The 10 day forecast looks good for mid April.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 17, 2021

Some of the river flows bumped up overnight from the rain but not enough to make a difference this morning. The water temps all seem to be within a degree of yesterday morning too.  That leaves us with a decent start today.  We’ll be close to 50 degrees this afternoon but may see a few snow showers before lunch. The precip. shouldn’t amount to anything.  Wind from North 5 – 10 mph.  Nymphing and streamers early will be your best bets early but keep an eye out for risers in the afternoon.  The dry fly fishing has been picking up offering some good shots each day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 16, 2021

Yesterday afternoon we had a decent olive hatch with a few blue quill mixed in.  Good olives.  It was the happiest we have seen fish yet.  The rain and overcast sky certainly helped keep the bugs on the water.  The next few days look cloudy with  little rain.  The air temp is down a little but should be back over 50 degrees tomorrow.  The eastern drainage flows are up a little from the rain but should begin to drop back.  No rivers came up dramatically and everything looks good for the weekend.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 15, 2021

It’s going to be cooler today with the air temp reaching 50 degrees.  We’ll see less than 1/4″ of rain according to Wunderground so the rivers should be fine.  Wind will be 10 – 15 from the North.   We warm up a bit more on Saturday but keep the cloud cover.  There were some fish eating on top yesterday (or close to the top according to reports) so have a good selection of olive emergers ready in the late afternoon.  Start off with either streamers or nymphs in the morning.  In the late afternoon watch the slow foam lines in the big pools for subtle risers.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 14, 2021

It’s 35 degrees this morning but should warm up to the mid 60’s by the afternoon.  We should see a mix of clouds and sun with a slight possibility of afternoon showers.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South.  This should be a good day to be on the water.  The olive hatches have been better on overcast and rainy days.  Nymphing and streamers will be your best bet early.  The runoff from Sunday and Mondays rain is working it’s way down the system and our rivers flows have dropped slightly and are looking good

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 13, 2021

We had a little more rain yesterday afternoon and overnight.  The river flows are up a little but not too bad.  We should see most of them peak and begin to drop soon.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy is at 627 cfs so it’s in good shape this morning.  The weather will clear up today with sunshine, light wind, and 63 degrees.   We may see some showers during the week but nothing that looks like it will add a lot water to the system.  We found some fish eating olives yesterday in the rain.  There were enough fish eating steady enough that you could target them and keep it interesting.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 12, 2021

It seems like most of the rain went South of us and the river flows are in decent shape this morning.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy is 569 cfs and beginning to drop.  We may see another 1/4″ fall today before it clears up overnight and we’re back to sunshine tomorrow.  Little black caddis, stoneflies, and a few olives are on the water.  People are finding some rising fish in spots but most are coming to the net on nymphs and streamers.  That should shift in the next week as the hatches intensify.  The release from Cannonsville is 374 cfs.

We lost our friend Stevens back in the Fall so here’s a shot of him doing what he loved from pre Covid times.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 11, 2021

Wunderground is calling for just under 1/2″ of rain today.  It looks like the rain will fall all day which is better than a couple brief heavy storms.  It should soak into the round for the most part.  The cloud cover will be nice with the air temp hitting 60 and wind 10 mph from the South.  Yesterday was slower than expected but people managed some fish.  Nymphing and streamers were still the best bets but we have seen more olives over the last few days.  The lower water should warm up faster and push the hatches a bit.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 10, 2021

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped and the West Branch flow at Stilesville shows 396 cfs this morning. Most likely that was done in anticipation of the rain this week adding runoff to the system. The last few warm days have really helped the water temps and most of the system is looking good this morning.  The warm nights really help.  We’ll hit the 70’s today and only drop into the low 50’s overnight.  We should see some cloud cover in the afternoon but no rain until tomorrow.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  It looks like a great fishing day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 9, 2021

The release from Cannonsville was dropped yesterday afternoon and sits at 671 cfs this morning.  It’s going to be cooler today with the air temp hitting 63 degrees.  We will get some cloud cover which we’ve needed the last few days.  Wind will be 10 mph from the South.  We warm up to the 70’s again tomorrow with more sun.  Still a lot of stoneflies and black caddis around so keep an eye for risers.  Otherwise streamers and nymphs have brought the most fish to net.  Nymphing seemed especially productive yesterday.

The water temps are getting better everyday.  We should see good hatches soon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions April 8, 2021

Yesterday was the nicest day of the year so far.  It was almost hot outside in the sun.  Today looks just as nice.  We’ll have sunshine, the air temp will hit 70 degrees, and wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.  We’ll see some clouds push in tomorrow with the chance of a few showers.  Streamers and nymphs are still the best producers but people are catching fish on stoneflies and small caddis too.  The dry fly fishing will improve as the water temperatures climb over the next couple of weeks.
