Delaware River Report / Conditions September 13, 2020

Everyone out there yesterday dealt with a little more sun and wind than they would have liked but overall it was pleasant and fish were landed.  Most dry fly fish came on olives but there were some caddis, isos , and white flies in spots.  Nymphing or swinging wets were better bets early in the day.  The fishing seemed spotty with no rhyme or reason during the sunshine so it payed to move around.  We should see more cloud cover today with wind 2 – 9 mph from the South.  We may see some rain but the total should be negligible.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 12, 2020

The cool nights have helped the water temps throughout the system.  It’s 47 degrees this morning and we’ll only hit 70 this afternoon.  Mostly sun with a few clouds and wind 7 mph from the South.  A nice day to be on the river.  The small olives are out along with some heptagenia, caddis, and a few isonychias.  Despite the cooler weather keep some flying ants in your box too.  The cooler weather will stick around for the next few days which is good news for the rivers and hatches.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 10, 2020

Today will be cooler in the high 70’s. Tonight the temp will drop back into the high 50’s.  This is the start of a cool down period that hopefully sticks around.  The cooler temps should help drop the water temps over the weekend and really feel like Fall.  There have been a lot of tiny olives around with a few heptagenias, isonychias, and caddis.  Hopefully the cooler weather pushes the Fall bugs.  Nymphing and wets have still been the best bets during the day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 9, 2020

The bright sun hitting the low water bumped up the water temps just enough to push the hatching to later in the day to after dark depending on where you were fishing.  Once the sun dropped there were a number of small olive spinners in the air with a few caddis mixed in.  The olives were small enough you really had to be set up in slow tailouts to make it work. Today is going to be another warm one at 83 degrees.  Wind shouldn’t be an issue.  Hopefully that pushes the flying ants.  We’ll cool back down a bit tomorrow and the weekend looks great with daytime highs in the low 70’s.  That should really help the water temps.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 8, 2020

The clouds stuck around longer than we expected yesterday but we did see some sunshine in the afternoon.  Today will be 82 degrees with clouds giving way to sun.  We’ll have a little more humidity with wind 6 mph from the South.  Writing that out it sounds like a good day for flying ants.  It eould be better if we had some rain early giving way to sun but we’ll take what we get.  Definitely have the ants handy in the afternoon just in case.  Otherwise it’s still the small olives, isonychia, caddis, and a few heptagenias.  If the sun really pops out it stick around until after it drops behind the hills for the best shot at dries.  Otherwise nymphing / wets have been the way to go during the day.

We’re going to leave this up for a bit because it’s important.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 7, 2020

Today will be sunny again with a few clouds.  We’ll be close to 80 degrees with 7 mph wind from the South. Nymphing and wet flies will be your best bet during the day.  Since we’ll have the sunshine and warm air hopefully we get some humidity to push the flying ants.  There was some dry fly action in some spots last evening.  Small olives, isonychias, and heptagenia are showing up.  White flies are out on some river sections offering some brief but decent opportunities towards dark.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 6, 2020

A little light rain is coming down this morning.  Very light- just enough to keep the dust down so the rivers are looking good.  We’ll see a mix of clouds and sun with the air temp hitting 74 degrees.  Wind will be 4 – 6 mph.  Sounds like a good day to be on the water.  Yesterday was nymphing early but people found fish eating olives in the evening.  The cooler nights and cloud cover should help.  Hopefully the flying ants make a reappearance over the next few days as the weather warms up.There are still some left over tricos around and we are finding a few more heptagenias each day.  Those should pick up along with the smaller isos as we move into fall.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 5, 2020

The bright sun didn’t help anyone out dry fly fishing on the river yesterday.  Nymphing and swinging wets were definitely the best bets.  The low release combined with the bright sun pushed the water temps up just enough to hold the hatching back.  For anyone not fishing it was an absolutely gorgeous day.  Today looks similar except we should have some clouds rolling in during the afternoon.  If you’re really looking for dry fly action concentrate on long riffles and look for caddis or blind cast isonychia patterns.  Plus keep you eyes open for flying ants.  They are around but unpredictable.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 4, 2020

Yesterday was a good mix of clouds and sunshine.  We didn’t get any more rain on the lower West which felt weird after pretty much 5 days of storms.  Today we’ll see more sunshine and a few clouds.  75 degrees with little wind.  The night time temps are dropping back into the 50’s for the weekend so we should see the water temps improve on some rivers. Olives and some isonychias have been out.  Some people are seeing the heptagenias in small  numbers too.  And always have your flying ants ready this time of year.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 3, 2020

We had a light rain most of yesterday and like normal the Eastern drainage flows came up quite a bit but the West Branch is is fine shape this morning.  The flow at Hale Eddy is 737 cfs and has peaked and is beginning to drop.  The release from Cannonsville is around 340 cfs.  The West is clear and still wadeable.  We’ll be warmer today at 79 degrees but we should keep most of the cloud cover.  There is a chance of a little more rain this afternoon.  Wind will be 4 – 7 mph from the South.  Olives, caddis, and a few isonychias should cover most of what you see.  Definitely carry flying ants- especially since we’ll be warmer today.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 2, 2020

We woke up to more rain this morning but it should taper off in over the next couple of hours.  Rain total will be between 1/4 and 1/2 inch.  After that we should have cloud cover with a small chance of thunderstorms for the rest of the day.  Wind will be from 4 to 12 mph so a little bit more than yesterday.  The air temp will reach 75 degrees this afternoon.  The release from Cannonsville has been cut back and the flow at Stilesville is 380 cfs this morning.  Olives, isonychia, and caddis will cover most of what you’ll see.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 1, 2020

We woke up to an overcast sky and light rain at 6 this morning.  Wind will be 2 – 5 mph from the South.  The rain won’t amount to anything and the air temp will be 73 degrees.  Pretty much sounds like an awesome day to start September.  It will probably fish best with nymphs and wets early but it the weather holds there’s a good shot at some olives mixed with a few isonychias in the afternoon.  Water levels and temps are pretty much the same as yesterday.
